Offensive and Defensive Exploitation of Ants by Termitophagous Spiders (Araneae: Zodariidae).

Myrmecophagy is one of the most common types of dietary specialization among predators. It can include exploitation of ants, termites, or both. Although ants and termites share a few traits, they are distantly related and possess different defensive mechanisms. Therefore, adaptations to ants and termites should differ, especially in arthropod predators of similar body size as their prey. We investigate offensive and defensive adaptations in Zodariidae spider genus Diores, reported to feed on termites. The ancestral state reconstruction of the diet favored termitophagy for the genus, but metaba…

The feeding apparatus of ants: an overview of structure and function.

Ants are a dominant family of eusocial terrestrial insects with a diversity of ecologies, lifestyles and morphologies. Ant diet preferences range from strict carnivory through omnivory to almost complete herbivory in species feeding on seeds or exudates of plant-sucking insects. While several studies have investigated ant feeding performance on different substrates, comparatively little is known about the functional morphology of the structures involved in food uptake or their diversification across the ants. To take stock of our current knowledge, we give an overview of how adult ants ingest …

Rolling away: a novel context-dependent escape behaviour discovered in ants.

For animals facing dangers, the best option to optimize costs and benefits of defence sometimes may be avoidance. Here we report the discovery of a peculiar strategy adopted by Myrmecina graminicola, a cryptic ant living in forest floor. Experiments showed that when disturbed these ants respond with immobility. However, upon perceiving disturbance but under specific inclinations of the substrate, they shift to an active escaping strategy: rolling away. This is a context-dependent behaviour adopted only in appropriate circumstances. During rolling, the ants assume a ball-like shape using antenn…

Carpenter ants use diverse antennae sampling strategies to track odor trails.

Directed and meaningful animal behavior depends on the ability to sense key features in the environment. Among the different environmental signals, olfactory cues are critically important for foraging, navigation and social communication in many species, including ants. Ants use their two antennae to explore the olfactory world, but how they do so remains largely unknown. In this study, we used high-resolution videography to characterize the antennae dynamics of carpenter ants (Camponotus pennsylvanicus). Antennae are highly active during both odor tracking and exploratory behavior. When track…

Overcoming PCR Inhibition During DNA-Based Gut Content Analysis of Ants.

Generalist predators play an important role in many terrestrial systems, especially within agricultural settings, and ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) often constitute important linkages of these food webs, as they are abundant and influential in these ecosystems. Molecular gut content analysis provides a means of delineating food web linkages of ants based on the presence of prey DNA within their guts. Although this method can provide insight, its use on ants has been limited, potentially due to inhibition when amplifying gut content DNA. We designed a series of experiments to determine those a…

Chemical camouflage--a frog's strategy to co-exist with aggressive ants.

Whereas interspecific associations receive considerable attention in evolutionary, behavioural and ecological literature, the proximate bases for these associations are usually unknown. This in particular applies to associations between vertebrates with invertebrates. The West-African savanna frog Phrynomantis microps lives in the underground nest of ponerine ants (Paltothyreus tarsatus). The ants usually react highly aggressively when disturbed by fiercely stinging, but the frog is not attacked and lives unharmed among the ants. Herein we examined the proximate mechanisms for this unusual ass…

The evolution of territorial behavior requires that the benefits of territoriality outweigh the costs. The costs are primarily those of terr … potential enemies has been demonstrated. We suggest that such a response is unnecessary for weaver ants, as encounters with intruders from non-neighboring colonies are probably rare and of little consequence. This study adds to the growing body of evidence that the nasty neighbor effect may be much more common than the dear enemy effect among group-li …

Venom gland of Pachycondyla striata worker ants (Hymenoptera: Ponerinae). Ultrastructural characterization.

Morphological data concerning the venom gland of worker ants of Pachycondyla striata revealed that this gland consists of three distinct regions: an external secretory portion, composed by a secretory filament that bifurcates in order to give rise to other two filaments; an internal secretory portion, represented by the convoluted gland; and a storage portion, represented by a sac-shaped reservoir. The ultrastructural analysis showed that the reservoir is enveloped by a simple pavementous epithelium, coated internally with a cuticle. The external secretory portion is composed by cells forming …

Prevention and primary care treatment of stings from imported fire ants.

Stings from imported fire ants constitute a problem encountered more and more frequently in practice settings across the Southern United States. Envenomation (impregnation of venom) in children is especially common. Current medical regimens for the treatment of other stinging insects are of little value in preventing local cutaneous reactions to fire-ant stings. The pathogenesis of reactions from imported-fire-ant stings is discussed, and suggestions for prevention, treatment and patient education are provided.

Enhanced leukemia prediction using hybrid ant colony and ant lion optimization for gene selection and classification.

Gene selection plays a crucial role in the pre-processing of microarray data, aiming to identify a small set of genes that enhances classification accuracy and reduces costs. Traditional methods, such as Genetic Algorithms (GA) and Maximum Relevance Minimum Redundancy (MRMR), have been widely used, but bio-inspired algorithms like Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) and Ant Lion Optimizer (ALO) have shown promising results. These algorithms are based on natural processes: ACO mimics the foraging behavior of ants, while ALO models the hunting strategy of ant-lion larvae. However, both approaches face…

Mutualism exploitation: predatory drosophilid larvae sugar-trap ants and jeopardize facultative ant-plant mutualism.

An open question in the evolutionary ecology of ant-plant facultative mutualism is how other members of the associated community can affect the interaction to a point where reciprocal benefits are disrupted. While visiting Qualea grandiflora shrubs to collect sugary rewards at extrafloral nectaries, tropical savanna ants deter herbivores and reduce leaf damage. Here we show that larvae of the fly Rhinoleucophenga myrmecophaga, which develop on extrafloral nectaries, lure potentially mutualistic, nectar-feeding ants and prey on them. Foraging ants spend less time on fly-infested foliage. Field …

Ant bite artifacts in a case of hanging.

Artifacts produced by postmortem animal scavenging are commonly encountered at autopsy. Knowledge of the pattern of artifacts produced by postmortem animal scavenging is essential for the correct interpretation of the autopsy finding. In household deaths, such artifacts are usually caused by domestic animals and by small insects such as flies, ants, beetles, etc. Ants are one of the early scavengers which feed on the dead bodies. The artifacts produced by the postmortem ant activity are usually superficial and non-bleeding type. Rarely, in the congested body regions and areas of marked hyposta…

Neuroretinitis following bull ant sting.

Cat scratch disease causes the majority of cases of neuroretinitis. Neuroretinitis is characterised by clinical features of papillitis, macular oedema and macular star. We report a case study of infection with Bartonella henselae most likely transmitted by a bull ant sting. The patient presented with blurred vision and reduced visual acuity after being stung by an ant in her garden some 7 days earlier. Further testing revealed positive serology to B henselae and the patient improved with appropriate treatment.

Anaphylaxis to venom of the Pachycondyla species ant.

BACKGROUND: In the southeastern United States, imported fire ants have caused systemic reactions with a high incidence. On the contrary, in Korea Pachycondyla species ants (P chinensis and P solitaria), and the family Formicidae, which are in the genus Pachycondyla and the subfamily Ponerinae, have only occasionally caused systemic reactions. OBJECTIVE: We sought to assess whether commercially available imported fire ant extract would be useful in treating patients with anaphylaxis induced by venom from a Pachycondyla species ant. METHODS: Serum samples were collected from 2 women who had an…

[Ante- and posthypophyseal insufficiency with infundibulum abnormalities].

The hypopituitarism and the diabetes insipidus are often idiopathic. A retrospective study of 6 cases of diabetes insipidus and 8 cases of partial or total idiopathic antehypophyseal insufficiency has shown the value of MRI to demonstrate anomalies of the infundibulum or hypothalamic-hypophysis "stages". MRI allows to bring together some cases of idiopathic hypopituitarism in a new entity which is the hypopituitarism due to a newborn section of the infundibulum.

A harvester ant venom: chemistry and pharmacology.

The mammalian toxicity of the potently algogenic venom of the ant Pogonomyrmex badius is greater than that reported for any other insect venom. This enzyme-rich venom contains high concentrations of phospholipase A2 and B, hyaluronidase, acid phosphatase, lipase, and esterases. This hemolytic secretion from the poison gland products unusual symptoms in mammals and appears to have been evolved as a deterrent for vertebrate predators.

Nematode infections induce distinct chemical signatures and provoke aggression in ants.

Maintaining group integrity by excluding outsiders and pathogens is a fundamental requirement and challenge of social living. In social insects, these defences rely heavily on chemical communication, with cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) mediating both nestmate recognition and infection-related social responses. In ants, CHCs are stored and homogenized in the pharyngeal gland, contributing to the formation of a shared colony odour that enables nestmate recognition. We investigated the behavioural and chemical responses of the clonal raider ant Ooceraea biroi to infections by the nematode Diplosca…

The predatory behavior of ants: an impressive panoply of morphological adaptations.

Ants are typically omnivorous insects with ovoid heads equipped with short mandibles, but there is great diversity in both the adaptations of their morphological and behavioral traits, as well as their dietary habits. Here, we review the variety of form and function in ant predation. Predation and scavenging were likely the plesiomorphic modes, with Cretaceous ants evolving mandibles well-suited to prey capture. In contemporary ground-dwelling species, mandible morphology can vary with adaptations to capturing particular prey as they may possess trap-jaw, snapping, or falciform mandibles chara…
