Adenocarcinoma (ADC) of the anal canal is a rare disease comprising only 5% of all anorectal neoplasias and 1.5% of all gastrointestinal tumours. The World Health Organisation classifies anal ADC into 3 types: the first may arise from the mucosa of the transitional zone in the upper canal, the second from the anal glands (ducts) and the last can develop in the environment of a chronic anorectal fistula. Patients with ADC of the anal canal have high rates of pelvic failure, distant metastasis, and lower overall survival than patients with epidermoid carcinoma. Because of limited case reports ab

Perianal symptoms are common, and benign anorectal conditions have clinical features not too dissimilar to those associated with anal canal carcinoma. To avoid delayed diagnosis, physicians need to be cognizant of the possibility of anal canal carcinoma, which can be effectively treated with chemoradiation therapy without the need for mutilating surgery. Appropriate imaging studies should be obtained for accurate staging of the disease and for follow-up examinations after definitive treatment.

PURPOSE: As survival rates for individuals with HIV/AIDS diagnoses increase, cancer is becoming a more prevalent disease in this population. Data regarding the concurrent diagnoses of HIV/AIDS and cancer has not previously been examined and analyzed in the state of Iowa.
METHODS: The Iowa Cancer Registry and Iowa Department of Public Health's HIV/AIDS surveillance databases were linked, and matches were identified. Characteristics of Iowans with HIV/AIDS later diagnosed with cancer between 1991 and 2015 were compared to Iowans without HIV/AIDS using proportional incidence ratios (PIRs).

The authors make a critical analysis of indications for temporary derivations, and for "d'emblée" resection in the emergency surgery of the colon. This study is based on a series of 267 cases where emergency surgery was necessary for various conditions of the colon. All were operated in the I-st Clinic of Surgery from Craiova. The authors stress the inefficiency of cecostomy for the solution of occlusions due to neoplasms of the colon, and list the present indications of this type of temporary derivation, which include: protection of a colo-colonic anastomosis, and the solution of perforations

In USA, colorectal cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in men, second in women, as well as the third leading cause of cancer deaths (Siegel et al. in Cancer J Clin 73:1-112, 2023 [109]). Worldwide, colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of death and causes almost 916,000 deaths each year (Ferlay in Global cancer observatory: cancer today. International Agency for Research on Cancer, Lyon, 2020 [28]). Fortunately, due to the colon's surgical and endoscopic accessibility and functional redundancy, colorectal cancer is very treatable. Colonoscopic surveillance has the potent

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCCA) of the anal canal is an underrecognized malignancy that is growing in annual incidence. Over the years, combined chemoradiation has been the mainstay of treatment for locally advanced SCCA of the anal canal. Currently, the human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine is recommended to prevent the development of HPV and its associated precancerous lesion(s). Patients diagnosed with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV+) are prone to develop anal cancer due to their high risk of contracting HPV infection. We will focus on the development and management of SCCA of the anal

AIM: We present a case of squamous-cell carcinoma developing within perianal lichen planus. This is a chronic or recurrent cutaneous and/or mucosal dermatosis affecting less than 1 percent of the population. Neoplastic degeneration of cutaneous lichen planus is rare; only one case of squamous-cell carcinoma developing within perianal lichen planus has been described up until now in the international literature.
CASE REPORT: Our case involved a 68-year-old woman with chronic, long-term lichen planus spreading all over the vulva and perianal region and the mucosa of the anal canal, where squamo

CASE HISTORY: A marked perineal swelling was identified in a 4-year-old entire nulliparous Huntaway bitch. The mass was first observed at last oestrus, 6 months previously.
CLINICAL FINDINGS: A diffuse swelling was visible in the perineum that extended from the anus to the vulva. The vulval commisure was distorted ventrolaterally. An extraluminal mass involved the vulva, vestibule and vagina. On rectal and vaginal examination the rostral extent could not be identified. There was no palpable intraluminal mass. The bitch produced a reduced urine flow, and there was complete voiding of the bladd

BACKGROUND: Complete appendiceal intussusception (CAI) coexisting with appendiceal tumor represents an exceptionally rare clinical tumor. This study presented a retrospective analysis of a case involving CAI complicated by appendiceal mucinous tumor, supplemented by a review of 10 previously reported cases to distill diagnostic and therapeutic insights.
CASE SUMMARY: A 74-year-old male patient presented with abdominal pain. Abdominal contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) initially suggested a colonic tumor with intussusception. Colonoscopy identified a mass in the colon 60 cm from the

A case of perianal abscess secondary to anal lymphoma affecting a human immunodeficiency virus negative patient is presented. Causes of perianal abscess other than anal glandular infection are important, although the proportion of abscesses reported to be secondary to these other causes is found to vary widely in the literature. A biopsy of the wall of an anorectal abscess should be taken when suspicion of an unusual cause arises.

PURPOSE: Giant condyloma acuminatum (Buschke-Loewenstein tumor) of the anorectum is a rare disease with a potentially fatal course. Controversy exists as to the epidemiology, pathologic nature, and management of the tumor.
METHODS: We present a 42-year-old male with a 12-cm x 10-cm exophytic mass of the anal verge. Treatment included wide local excision and partial closure with rotation flaps. Pathology revealed a giant condyloma acuminatum with foci of well-differentiated squamous-cell carcinoma. We identified 51 reported cases of giant condyloma acuminatum in the English literature, and to
