The importance of separation anxiety in the differentiation of panic disorder from agoraphobia.

When patients with panic disorders are divided into two groups, those that are without any signs of phobic avoidance and those that are frankly agoraphobic, we see a differential premorbid history of separation anxiety in childhood with school phobia. The former group we found to be without these problems, while the latter demonstrated a history of school phobia in the majority of cases (60 per cent). This may indicate that uncomplicated panic disorder and agoraphobia with panic attacks are not always differential cross-sections of the same disease process, or different levels of severity of t

Separation anxiety disorder, perceived overprotection and quality of life in epilepsy patients.

OBJECTIVE: People with epilepsy suffer from the stress of living with a chronic, unpredictable disease that can lead to discrimination, misunderstanding, social stigma, and loss of autonomy in activities of daily life, elevating anxiety. Within the scope of this research, we aimed to elucidate the frequency of separation anxiety disorder in adult people with epilepsy and to examine the relationship between separation anxiety symptoms, perceived overprotection, and quality of life in comparison to the control group. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This prospective study was conducted with 105 people wit

Separation Anxiety Disorder in Panic Disorder Patients with and without Comorbid Agoraphobia.

Objective: Previous studies have focused on the relationship between childhood separation anxiety disorder (SAD) and adult panic disorder (PD)-agoraphobia. It is not clear enough whether SAD, which continues into adulthood, is associated with PD with and without comorbid agoraphobia in adult patients. Our primary hypothesis was that PD patients with comorbid agoraphobia had a higher rate of SAD that continues into adulthood than those without agoraphobia. We also hypothesized that adulthood SAD symptoms were more likely to be associated with PD-agoraphobia than PD without agoraphobia.Method: 1

Hypersensitivity to 35% carbon dioxide in patients with adult separation anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Adults with panic disorder (PD) and children with separation anxiety disorder (CSAD) show higher reactivity to CO(2). Our hypothesis was patients with adult separation anxiety disorder (ASAD) would show similar hypersensitivity to CO(2). In the present study, we determined whether sensitivity to CO(2) was enhanced in adult patients with separation anxiety disorder with no history of panic attacks. METHODS: Patients with PD (n=38), adult separation anxiety disorder (ASAD) patients with no history of panic attacks (n=31), and healthy subjects (n=40) underwent a 35% CO(2) inhalation

Modeling anxiety-like states: pharmacological characterization of the chick separation stress paradigm.

While previous research has sought to validate the chick separation stress paradigm as an anxiolytic screening assay, it is unknown whether the paradigm better models a nonspecific anxiety-like state or something similar to panic disorder or generalized anxiety disorder. To characterize the anxiety model pharmacologically, cockerels were administered drug probes that were either: (1) only effective for treating panic disorder (phenelzine 3.125-25.0 mg/kg), (2) effective for treating both panic disorder and generalized anxiety disorder (alprazolam 0.065-0.5 mg/kg; clonidine 0.1-0.25 mg/kg; imip

Relationship of behavioral inhibition to separation anxiety in a sample (N = 377) of adult individuals with mood and anxiety disorders.

BACKGROUND: Behavioral Inhibition (BI) is an early temperamental trait characterized by shyness, withdrawal, avoidance, uneasiness, and fear of unfamiliar situations, people, objects, and events. The DSM-5 refers to behavioral inhibition as a temperamental factor related to neurodevelopmental conditions in childhood, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, selective mutism, and specific phobias; and to its influence on adult anxiety disorders including social anxiety disorder, agoraphobia, and generalized anxiety disorder, but, interestingly, not separation anxiety disorder (SAD).

Effectiveness of Therapeutic and Educational Interventions for Childhood Separation Anxiety: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Separation anxiety disorder (SAD) is a common childhood condition characterised by excessive distress related to separation from attachment figures, often leading to social, emotional, and academic difficulties. If untreated, SAD can increase the risk of future psychopathology, highlighting the importance of effective interventions. AIM: This scoping review systematically maps and analyzes the current evidence on intervention strategies to reduce separation anxiety and promote emotional and social well-being in children. METHOD: Following Arksey and O'Malley's framework and PRISM

Maternal separation and its developmental consequences on anxiety and parvalbumin interneurons in the amygdala.

The early postnatal period represents an exceptionally vulnerable phase for the development of neurobiological alterations, aberrant behavior, and psychiatric disorders. Altered GABAergic activity in the hippocampus and the amygdala have been identified in humans diagnosed with depression or anxiety disorders, as well as in respective animal models. Changes in GABAergic activity can be visualized by immunohistochemical staining of parvalbumin (PV) protein. Therewith, alterations in PV intensity as well as in the integrity of the perineural net surrounding PV positive (PV+) interneurons have be

Separation anxiety disorder in childhood as a risk factor for future mental illness.

OBJECTIVE: To ascertain the extent to which childhood separation anxiety disorder (SAD) confers risk for the development of psychopathology during young adulthood (ages 19-30). METHOD: A subset of the participants of the Oregon Adolescent Depression Project (n = 816) was used. Subjects provided retrospective reports of lifetime mental illness (including SAD) and concurrent reports of current mental illness at age 16 and were then followed prospectively until age 30. Diagnostic assessments were conducted twice during adolescence and again at ages 24 and 30. Based on diagnosis during childhood/

History of separation anxiety in patients with panic disorder and depression and normal controls.

The frequency and severity of separation anxiety for subjects with panic disorder and major depression was compared with that for normal controls. The subjects were diagnosed according to DSM-III criteria. Each subject completed a questionnaire consisting of 9 items derived from DSM-III criteria for separation anxiety disorder. The incidence of separation anxiety and its severity were significantly higher for the panic disorder subjects than for normal controls but there was no significant difference between depressed and panic disorder subjects. Panic disorder subjects with a history of separ

Blind Source Separation-Embedded Electroencephalogram Microstate Trajectory Modeling for Generalized Anxiety Disorder Identification.

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) diagnosis remains challenging due to lacking reliable biomarkers. Electroencephalography(EEG) microstate analysis shows promise in detecting GAD-related neural dynamics, but its clinical application is limited by insufficient spatial resolution and sensitivity. To address this challenge, we propose a novel framework integrating fast independent component analysis (FastICA) with microstate analysis to enhance spatial specificity in EEG signal decomposition, consequently, GAD can be more accurately identified.By isolating dominant independent components and proj

Childhood Separation Anxiety Disorder and Panic Disorder: Differences Between Respiratory and Nonrespiratory Subtypes.

Objective: The association between childhood separation anxiety disorder (CSAD) and panic disorder (PD) has been demonstrated, although some findings are contradictory. The separation anxiety hypothesis postulates that both CSAD and PD encompass a heightened sensitivity to carbon dioxide (CO2). Patients with the respiratory subtype (RS) of PD are known to be more sensitive to CO2 than those from the nonrespiratory subtype (NRS). Therefore, the primary objective centered on the comparative analysis of CSAD prevalence between RS and NRS groups, with secondary objectives focusing on the comparati

Multi-level Hierarchical Complex Behavior Monitoring System for Dog Psychological Separation Anxiety Symptoms.

An increasing number of people own dogs due to the emotional benefits they bring to their owners. However, many owners are forced to leave their dogs at home alone, increasing the risk of developing psychological disorders such as separation anxiety, typically accompanied by complex behavioral symptoms including excessive vocalization and destructive behavior. Hence, this work proposes a multi-level hierarchical early detection system for psychological Separation Anxiety (SA) symptoms detection that automatically monitors home-alone dogs starting from the most fundamental postures, followed by

[Psychodynamic-multisystemic Therapy of School Phobia due to Separation Anxiety in Day Clinic].

Psychodynamic understanding and systemic approach in the multi-family treatment of a day care clinic are illustrated following the case report of a seven-year old girl with school phobia due to separation anxiety. The treatment modalities of the day clinic at the University Medical Center Muenster are described focussing on the multi-systemic approach. Using psychodynamic and systemic hypotheses the process of treatment is developed. Specific interventions, differentiated into reorganizations of inner and outer world issues, are traced to psychodynamic and systemic hypotheses. In conclusion it
