OBJECTIVE: To examine the degree of apoptosis and its role in the pathogenesis of polyps of the vocal folds.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: A review of the pathology department's archives for patients diagnosed with vocal fold polyps between 2010 and 2016 has been conducted. As a control group, gross and microscopically intact vocal fold from laryngectomy specimens was collected. Apoptosis plays a significant role in both the physiological and pathological process. A dysfunctional apoptotic system can lead to either excessive removal or prolonged survival of cells. Chemically modified tetracyclines (CMTs) are thought to inhibit bone resorption through inhibition of matrix metalloproteinases. Here we report that some tetracyclines also induce apoptosis in rabbit osteoclasts and inhibit differentiation and activity of osteoclasts in murine osteoblast/marrow cocultures. OBJECTIVE: Cell death was evaluated in oral erythema multiforme to test the hypothesis that apoptosis may be a mechanism by which keratinocytes die in this condition.
