[Fourteen Cases of Low-Grade Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasm].

Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm(LAMN)is a rare disease. In consideration of consistency with the 2010WHO Classification, LAMNwas classified in the Japanese Classification of Colorectal Carcinoma 8th edition. The present study involved 14 patients with LAMNover a 5-year period. The preoperative diagnosis was made as mucocele of the appendix in 9 cases. Operative interventions included ileocecal resection in 6 cases(laparoscopic; 3 cases)and appendectomy in 8 cases (laparoscopic; 6 cases). Histopathologically, there was no LNpositive case. While adjuvant therapies were not administered i

Low-grade appendiceal neoplasm presenting as a volvulus of the cecum.

Mucocele of the appendix is an uncommon disorder that is often asymptomatic, but can present similarly to acute appendicitis. Timely diagnosis and treatment is imperative due to the many complications that can result from the mucocele, such as perforation. Appendiceal mucoceles (AM) were previously thought to be either benign or malignant; however, a different pathological classification of AM is currently favored. Also, only a few cases of volvulus of a benign AM have been reported. Here, we present the first reported case of a low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm resulting in a volvulus o

[Appendiceal diverticulosis, a potential mimic of low grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm: analysis of 20 cases].

Objective: To study the clinicopathologic features and the key points of differential diagnosis of appendiceal diverticulosis (AD) and low-grade mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) to avoid over-diagnosis. Methods: The clinical data, pathologic features and follow-up information of 20 patients with AD, who were diagnosed in the Peking University Third Hospital from January 2010 to November 2019 were collected and compared with 44 cases of LAMN which were diagnosed during the same period. Results: Among the 20 cases of AD, hypermucinous epithelium, filiform villi or undulating epithelium and mucosa atroph

Dysplastic intestinal-type metaplasia of appendiceal endometriosis: a mimic of low grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm.

UNLABELLED: We report an example of dysplastic intestinal-type metaplasia involving endometriosis of the appendix in a 45 year old woman. One other example of this phenomenon has been reported. As it occurs within the muscular wall of the appendix, confusion with low grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) may occur. Evidence supporting the metaplastic nature of the intestinal epithelium is offered. As the initial pathological diagnosis was of invasive cancer with perforation of the appendix treatment consisted of peritonectomy and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). VIRTUAL

Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasm: An Unexpected Diagnosis in Abdominal Pain.

Appendiceal mucinous neoplasms are neoplastic appendicular lesions resulting from the abnormal accumulation of mucin in the appendix. These neoplasms can be asymptomatic or present with vague, nonspecific symptoms. Although generally considered benign, they carry the risk of severe complications such as pseudomyxoma peritonei. We present a 17-year-old boy with fever and suprapubic pain radiating to the right lower quadrant, with no definitive clinical, imaging, or intraoperative macroscopic diagnosis, who was found to have an appendiceal mucinous neoplasm. He underwent complete resection of th

Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm: A case report.

RATIONALE: Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) is a clinically rare tumor that predominantly occurs in females and presents with nonspecific symptoms, often resulting in misdiagnosis. While postoperative pathology remains the gold standard for diagnosis, accurate preoperative identification through various diagnostic methods is essential for effective treatment planning. To raise awareness of this condition, we present a case of a middle-aged male diagnosed with LAMN. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 52-year-old male presented to outpatient clinic with right lower abdominal pain lasting 1 day.

Low-Grade Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasm: A Case Series.

Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) is a lesion of the appendix with potentially fatal consequences if untreated. Though LAMN can be asymptomatic and stable, it can rupture and seed mucin and neoplastic epithelium into the peritoneum, leading to pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP), a serious complication characterized by intraperitoneal accumulation of mucinous tumors and ascites with a high morbidity and mortality rate. Therefore, timely identification and treatment of LAMN are crucial for reducing PMP risk and improving prognosis and outcome. This case series sought to examine five LAMN

Appendiceal neoplasms and histological involvement of the mesoappendix: A case series.

INTRODUCTION: Acute appendicitis is a common presentation to surgical departments, typically resulting in appendicectomy. Appendiceal tumours may not be visible intraoperatively, and are present in roughly 0.5-1% of specimens. Routine resection of the mesoappendix is not universally practiced, despite the mesoappendix being commonly involved in appendiceal tumours. This is a case series of the histological findings of 21 patients with appendiceal tumours, with consideration to tumour within the resected mesoappendix. METHODS: We reviewed the histology of 1344 patients undergoing laparoscopic a

Predictors of Progression of Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasm to Pseudomyxoma Peritonei.

Appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (AMN) can present with a spectrum of disease. Predicting factors in development of pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) from AMN could aid in management and treatment. The aim of this study was to determine factors predictive of PMP from AMN. This was a retrospective multicenter study of all patients diagnosed with AMN from 2006-2017. Diagnosis of PMP was compared by (1) patient demographics, (2) tumor characteristics, and (3) surgery. Secondary end points were disease-specific survival (DSS) and overall survival (OS).One-hundred thirty-eight patients with AMN were identi

Appendicitis mimicking the CT appearance of an appendiceal mucinous neoplasm.

Occasionally, radiologically diagnosed acute appendicitis is found to harbour underlying appendiceal neoplasm on post-surgical histopathology. Conversely, a situation in which radiologically, the appendix demonstrates features consistent with an underlying tumour but post-operative pathology finds no evidence of neoplastic change is rare. We describe a case of a 50-year-old man who presented with a markedly dilated "mass-like" appendix with minimal inflammatory changes on a computed tomography scan. Radiological findings were suspicious for an appendiceal neoplasm/mucocele (i.e. low-grade muci

An Update on the Diagnosis, Grading, and Staging of Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasms.

Despite advances in our understanding of appendiceal mucinous neoplasms and their relationship to the pseudomyxoma peritonei syndrome, the classification of mucinous tumors of the appendix is still confusing. This review will provide an update on the various classification systems that have been recently proposed for appendiceal mucinous neoplasia, with a particular emphasis on how to handle and report the histologic findings for these tumors using the newly published Peritoneal Surface Oncology Group International (PSOGI) and American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) eighth edition guidelines

Mucinous Appendiceal Neoplasms and Pseudomyxoma Peritonei: Imaging Features and Current Therapies.

Pseudomyxoma peritonei involves the gradual accumulation of gelatinous peritoneal metastases, typically resulting from the rupture of a mucinous appendiceal neoplasm. Standard treatment often includes cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. However, recurrence is common despite optimal cytoreduction, prompting ongoing investigation into novel therapies. This comprehensive review aims to enhance radiologists' understanding of mucinous appendiceal neoplasms and pseudomyxoma peritonei by focusing on nomenclature, pathophysiology, optimal imaging strategies, and the ty…

Insights into the Clinical Prognosis of High-grade Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasms.

High-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (HAMN) is used to describe a rare epithelial neoplasm of the appendix characterized by pushing-type invasion and high-grade cytologic atypia. Its implications regarding lymph node spread and the necessity of right colectomy are currently debate. The objective of the present study was to assess the clinicopathologic characteristics, the risk of lymph node and peritoneal metastasis, and long-term outcomes of patients diagnosed as HAMN in comparison to low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) and appendiceal adenocarcinoma, treated by right hemicolec

Updated staging and patient outcomes in low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms.

Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (LAMNs) exhibit drastically different clinical course and prognosis depending on tumor stage, particularly as it relates to the extent and cellularity of peritoneal involvement. In this context, recent changes in staging guidelines have sought to clarify criteria for pT and pM categories. This study's aim was to identify clinicopathological features associated with patient outcomes, especially as they pertain to updated stage groups. We reviewed LAMNs from 192 patients (mean age: 56.9 years, 119 (62.0%) women). The tumors consisted of 66 (34.4%) pTisM0,

Two concurrent appendiceal neoplasms in an elderly patient: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Acute appendicitis, one of the commonest surgical diagnoses, is rare and more complex presentation in the elderly. Physicians must consider atypical causes appendicitis in this population, which could affect the management of the patient. PRESENTATION OF CASE: An elderly female presented with a two-day history of lower abdominal pain, associated with low-grade fevers and chills. Studies showed leukocytosis and computed tomography (CT) findings consistent with appendicitis. She underwent laparoscopic appendectomy. Intra-operatively, the Appendix had an unusual appearance, so a fr

Heterotopic ossification in appendiceal mucinous neoplasms: clinicopathological characteristics of 3 cases.

Heterotopic bone formation is a very rare event in the gastrointestinal tract including in the appendix. Here we report three cases of heterotopic ossification in appendiceal mucinous neoplasms, one occurring in an appendiceal mucinous cystadenoma, another in a low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm, and the third occurring in an appendiceal mucinous adenocarcinoma. The clinicopathologic characteristics of these three present cases and two previously reported cases are discussed in detail. The mechanism of heterotopic ossification in appendiceal mucinous neoplasm is still unclear, but mucin e
