Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Screening in Israel-Arab and Palestinian-Arab Neonates.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the frequency of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PD) deficiency, the incidence of clinically significant jaundice (any serum total bilirubin value >75th percentile on the hour-specific bilirubin nomogram), and the need for phototherapy in the pooled male Israeli-Arab and Palestinian-Arab population born at the Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem, Israel. STUDY DESIGN: Quantitative G-6-PD enzyme testing of umbilical cord blood was performed during birth hospitalization. G-6-PD deficiency was defined as any G-6-PD value <7.0 U/gHb. Transcutaneous bilirubin was

The Driver Behaviour Questionnaire in Arab Gulf countries: Qatar and United Arab Emirates.

Manchester Driver Behaviour Questionnaire (DBQ) is one of the most widely used instruments for measuring self-reported driving style and investigating the relationship between driving behaviour and accident involvement. In spite of the fact that Arab Gulf countries have a higher road accident fatality rate compared to European countries and USA, the DBQ has not been used in Arab countries so far. The aim of the present study was to investigate the factor structure of the DBQ, then to examine the relationships between the factors of the DBQ and accident involvement, and finally to compare DBQ s

NOD2/CARD15 Mutations among Bedouin Arabs with Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Frequency and Phenotype Correlation.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) prevalence is increasing among Bedouin Arabs in Israel. This population is known to have a high rate of consanguinity. NOD2/CARD15 mutations are well-studied in IBD. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the frequency of NOD2/CARD15 mutations in IBD Bedouin patients and their relevance to disease phenotype. METHODS: The IBD-Arab cohort in southern Israel included 68 patients, of which 25 Crohn's disease (CD) patients and 25 ulcerative colitis (UC) patients consented to participate (72%). Blood samples were obtained from all participants who were genotyped fo…

Ankylosing spondylitis and undifferentiated spondyloarthritis in Kuwait: a comparison between Arabs and South Asians.

The objectives of this study were to describe and compare the clinical characteristics of ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and undifferentiated spondyloarthritis (USpA) in Middle East Arab (MEA) and South Asian (SA) patients diagnosed in our unit. Fifty-eight consecutive patients diagnosed with SpA were studied after classifying them into MEA and SA. They were further classified as per disease diagnosis. Excluding three patients with miscellaneous ethnicity, there were 29 MEA and 26 SA patients. Seventy-two percent of MEA patients were males (vs 92% of SA patients). Of the 29 patients with MEA ethn

Heterogeneity and variation of clinical and haematological expression of haemoglobin S in Saudi Arabs.

Sickle cell haemoglobin (Hb S) occurs at a high frequency in the Eastern (EP), South-Western (SWP) and North-Western (NWP) Provinces of Saudi Arabia and the presentation of the Hb S is believed to exhibit clinical diversity in the different regions. Three areas of Saudi Arabia were screened to determine the frequency of Hb S and alpha- and beta-thalassaemias and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency genes. Furthermore, in an attempt to investigate and compare the clinical and haematological presentation of sickle cell disease (SCD) in the different regions of Saudi Arabia, the individua

Reliability, validity and responsiveness of the Arabic version of the Disability of Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH-Arabic).

PURPOSE: To investigate the psychometric properties (reliability, validity and responsiveness) of the DASH-Arabic in a cohort of Arabic patients presenting with various upper extremity conditions. METHODS: Participants were 139 patients with various upper extremity conditions, who completed the DASH-Arabic at the baseline, 2-5 days later and 30-36 days later. Participants completed demographic data forms, the SF-36 and VAS at baseline, and a Global Rating of Change scale at first and second follow-ups. RESULTS: Cronbach's alpha of the DASH-Arabic was 0.94. Test-retest reliability was excelle

Phenylketonuria in Kuwait and Arab countries.

Seven cases of phenylketonuria including a pair of siblings were detected among 451 institutionalized mentally retarded individuals in Kuwait. A further 13 cases from eight Arab families of different nationalities were ascertained among referral cases. The occurrence of phenylketonuria in Kuwait and other Arab countries is discussed in view of the high consanguinity rate and large family size. Our findings stress the need for neonatal screening.

Huntington's Disease in Arab Countries.

Huntington's disease (HD) is an inherited neurodegenerative disorder. Involuntary choreaform movements are the main symptom. The prevalence of HD in Arab countries is not fully understood, as there are only a few reports indicating disease incidence. Therefore, there is an urgent need for an investigation to determine the frequency of HD in the Middle East, especially within Arab countries, and at the same time enhance people's awareness of the disease.

Canavan disease: an Arab scenario.

The autosomal recessive Canavan disease (CD) is a neurological disorder that begins in infancy. CD is caused by mutations in the gene encoding the ASPA enzyme. It has been reported with high frequency in patients with Jewish ancestry, and with low frequency in non-Jewish patients. This review will shed light on some updates regarding CD prevalence and causative mutations across the Arab World. CD was reported in several Arab countries such as Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, Yemen, Kuwait, and Tunisia. The population with the highest risk is in Saudi Arabia due the prevalent consanguineous marriag

Gastritis in Saudi Arab children.

OBJECTIVE: Information on childhood gastritis in developing countries is rare; hence, the objective of this study is to report the pattern of this condition in Saudi Arab children. METHODS: Data analysis were carried out in all children <18 years of age who were referred for endoscopy at King Khalid University Hospital, Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from 1993 to 2002. Only children with histology-proven gastritis were included. RESULTS: One hundred and seventy-five patients out of 851, referred for the investigation of gastrointestinal symptoms, had histology-proven gastritis; whereas only

Breast cancer in Arabic women.

A case-control study of breast cancer was conducted in Cairo, Egypt and in Kuwait. This is the first such report from Arabic countries and the most significant finding is the animal incidence rate of 7.67 per 100,000 in Kuwaiti women, which ranks amongst the lowest thus far reported in the world. Factors which contribute to this low rate are a short period of active menstruation, low family history, first childbirth at very early age and most likely significant dietary factors. More than 45% of Egyptian women give birth to a child before the age of 20, with 56.5% of controls and 42.3% of patie

Red cell genetic abnormalities in Peninsular Arabs: sickle haemoglobin, G6PD deficiency, and alpha and beta thalassaemia.

The frequencies of four major red cell genetic defects, sickle haemoglobin (Hb S), glucose 6 phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency (G6PD), and alpha and beta thalassaemia, have been determined in nearly 5000 subjects from the three major Peninsular Arab States, namely Yemen (North and South), the United Arab Emirates, and Oman. All four defects are common with an overall pattern of alpha thalassaemia greater than G6PD deficiency greater than beta thalassaemia greater than Hb A/S. However, the frequencies of these within each state varies and they are, respectively, Oman: 0.389, 0.328, 0.024, and
