OBJECTIVES: Suicide safety barriers were removed from a central city bridge in an Australasian metropolitan area in 1996 after having been in place for 60 years. The bridge is a known suicide site and is located adjacent to the region's largest hospital, which includes an acute inpatient psychiatric unit. This paper examines the impact of the removal of these barriers on suicide rates.
METHOD: Data for suicide deaths by jumping from the bridge in question, from 1992 to 2000, were obtained from the regional City Police Inquest Office. Data for suicide deaths by jumping from other sites in the

The same reasons that prompt older people to give up driving can also result in difficulties with accessing public transport. Difficulties using public transport can limit older people's participation in society, thereby impacting negatively on their health. Focusing on public buses, this review explicates the link between bus usability and the health of older people and frames existing evidence on bus usability issues. The Person-Environment-Occupation (PEO) model offers a framework by which bus usability can be assessed. A combination of person-centred, environmental, and occupation-related

The present contribution builds on the author's experience, is however not intended solely as a review, but sets out some approaches and suggestions pertaining to three areas which, in the author's view, belong to the problematic issues in the life of ill and disabled persons in our society. These are: the deficits in rehabilitation; the importance of talking with disabled or ill persons; and the educational integration of disabled children with its present possibilities and limits. Perhaps the views and suggestions set out can contribute to introducing a more everyday problem orientation into

Functional nucleic acids (FNAs), including aptamers and DNAzymes, offer programmable recognition and catalysis for biosensing, but their performance in real samples is often compromised by nuclease degradation, matrix effects, and interface-associated losses. For diagnostic translation, stability must, therefore, be defined not only as strand persistence, but as retained folding, binding, catalysis, and signal generation under assay-relevant conditions. This review examines strategies for stabilizing FNAs in complex biological matrices and organizes the field around four design levers: Chemica

This study, conducted on an Alzheimer's unit, tested seven different visual barrier conditions for reducing patient exists. Findings indicate that exiting was eliminated under two conditions. The results suggest visual agnosia, the inability to interpret what the eye sees, may be utilized as a tool in managing wandering behavior of Alzheimer's patients.

Unstructured or "free play" is essential for children's psychological, emotional, social, and physical development. For disabled children, accessible playgrounds function as assistive environments that enable participation and inclusion. However, many playgrounds remain inaccessible due to limited awareness of inclusive design among those responsible for planning and development. This study explored the knowledge, practices, and perceived barriers among New Zealand local councils in the context of accessible playground design. All 78 councils, across 23 regions, were invited to complete an onl

People with a disability encounter many barriers in gyms, limiting their opportunities to experience health benefits associated with exercise. To better understand how to develop accessible exercise opportunities, this study examined person-environment interactions from the perspectives of diverse participants as they navigated gyms. A think-aloud protocol involving a series of tasks completed in two gyms was adopted to capture perceptions of accessibility, usability, and inclusion. Directed content analyses of think-aloud transcripts were guided by the Universal Design-based framework. Fourte

Accessibility is an essential consideration in the design of public spaces, and commonly referred to as 'pedestrian accessibility' when walking is the primary mode of transportation. Computational methods, frequently coupled with Geographic Information systems (GIS), are increasingly available for assessing pedestrian accessibility using digital cartographic data such as road networks and digital terrain models. However, they often implicitly assume a level of mobility that may not be achievable by individuals with mobility impairments, e.g., wheelchair users. Therefore, it remains uncertain w

INTRODUCTION: Despite evidence supporting the benefits of individualised disability housing, the extent to which the built environment in these housing models meets the needs of tenants with disability and complex needs remains unclear. One form of individualised housing includes apartments designed for people with disability peppered throughout larger apartment complexes. In this study, we aimed to explore the experience of the built environment for people living in these apartments.
METHODS: Thirteen adults with disabilities and complex needs (Ehlers-Danlos syndrome = 3; cerebral palsy = 1;

PURPOSE: Despite the increase of users of Mobility Assistive Devices (MobAD), there has been a lack of accessibility in urban environments in many parts of the world. We present a systematic review of how the inaccessible design of public spaces affects quality-of-life - including aspects of health and safety, independence, and social participation - of MobAD users.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a literature search in three databases (i.e., Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed) and initially discovered 3980 publications. We analysed 48 peer-reviewed journal articles published in English f

BACKGROUND: The Golden Gate Bridge (GGB) is a well-known "suicide magnet" and the site of approximately 30 suicides per year. Recently, a suicide barrier was approved to prevent further suicides.
AIMS: To estimate the cost-effectiveness of the proposed suicide barrier, we compared the proposed costs of the barrier over a 20-year period ($51.6 million) to estimated reductions in mortality.
METHOD: We reviewed San Francisco and Golden Gate Bridge suicides over a 70-year period (1936-2006). We assumed that all suicides prevented by the barrier would attempt suicide with alternative methods and

INTRODUCTION: Worldwide, one in six individuals live with a disability. Many people continue to experience disabling situations, particularly when travelling. Travel can be an important part of the lives of many people, including people with disabilities. Barriers to accessing air travel can lead to a reluctance to travel for these potential passengers. As early as the flight planning stage, options to facilitate accessibility are limited. At airports, passengers must travel long distances in areas where navigation is complex, and accessibility limited. Furthermore, few aircraft are accessible
