The posterior arm free flap.

A new cutaneous free flap is described on the posterior side of the arm. This flap is supplied by an unnamed artery from the humeral artery or the deep humeral artery. It is drained by the accompanying venae comitantes. Its nerve supply is from the radial nerve. Its advantage is a flexible skin and a primary closure of the donor site if the flap does not exceed 7 cm in width. The principal disadvantage is its modest measurements. This flap has been employed in five cases for reconstruction of hand and foot. All flaps survived despite a necessary revision of an arterial anastomosis in one case …

The inner arm fasciocutaneous flap.

A fasciocutaneous flap raised on the inner surface of the upper arm has been used to release 16 burn scar contractures of the anterior axillary fold. It is a relatively quick and simple procedure that adequately corrects the contracture and does not have to followed by prolonged splinting.

Management of arm arterial injuries.

Management, morbidity, and mortality of arterial injuries of the arm are dependent upon site of injury, promptness and accuracy of diagnosis, and involvement of contiguous structures. To determine results and establish principles of management, a retrospective analysis was undertaken of 109 arm arterial injuries from the thoracic inlet to the wrist in 102 patients. Iatrogenic injuries were excluded. Arterial injuries were classified into those affecting the upper arm (subclavian, axillary, and brachial) and those affecting the lower arm (radial, ulnar, and interosseous). This proved to be a us…

Arm and shoulder conditions, active component, U.S. Armed Forces, 2003-2012.

This analysis estimated the incidence and health care burden of acute and chronic conditions of the arm and shoulder among active component service members of the Armed Forces from 1 January 2003 through 31 December 2012. There were 196,789 diagnosed incident cases of acute arm and shoulder conditions for a rate of 13.7 cases per 1,000 person-years. The annual incidence rates of sprains, the most common acute condition, nearly doubled during the period. Diagnoses of chronic conditions (overall rate of 28.8 per 1,000 person-years) increased 25 percent during the period, mainly associated with a…

Save that arm: a study of problems in the remaining arm of unilateral upper limb amputees.

A study has been made by questionnaire, personal examination and telephone interview of unilateral upper limb amputees seen at the Prince Henry Hospital, Australia between 1994 and 1997. There were 60 questionnaires posted. Replies were received from 46. Problems were noted in the remaining arm of 23 (50%). The respondents' problems not only consisted of overuse symptoms, but also of an exacerbation of pre-existing arthritis and injury due to trauma to the remaining arm during the accident. Case histories are given in 3 typical cases. Treating professionals are warned about the hazards that on…

Establishing levels of arm-hand activities in stroke patients: the arm-hand-activities-scale (AHAS).

OBJECTIVE: Post-stroke limitations in arm-hand activities are prevalent, yet a system for categorizing these limitations like the Functional Ambulation Categories (FAC) is lacking. The Arm-Hand-Activities-Scale (AHAS) was developed and psychometric properties of this classification were investigated. DESIGN: Mixed methods to examine comprehensibility, inter-rater reliability, correlations with the Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA) and the Action Research Arm Test (ARAT), and sensitivity to change. SUBJECTS/PATIENTS: 76 professionals answered a comprehensibility questionnaire and 85 professionals a…

C-arm Free O-arm Navigated Posterior Atlantoaxial Fixation in Down Syndrome: A Technical Note.

The surgical treatment of pediatric atlantoaxial subluxation (AAS) in Down syndrome (DS) remains technically challenging due to radiation exposure and complications such as vertebral artery injury and nonunion. The established treatment is fixation with a C1 lateral mass screw and C2 pedicle screw (modified Goel technique). However, this technique requires fluoroscopy for C1 screw insertion. To avoid exposing the operating team to radiation we present here a new C-arm free O-arm navigated surgical procedure for pediatric AAS in DS. A 5-year-old male DS patient had neck pain and unsteady gait. …

Self-Contained Neuromusculoskeletal Arm Prostheses.

We report the use of a bone-anchored, self-contained robotic arm with both sensory and motor components over 3 to 7 years in four patients after transhumeral amputation. The implant allowed for bidirectional communication between a prosthetic hand and electrodes implanted in the nerves and muscles of the upper arm and was anchored to the humerus through osseointegration, the process in which bone cells attach to an artificial surface without formation of fibrous tissue. Use of the device did not require formal training and depended on the intuitive intent of the user to activate movement and s…

Arm position during daily activity.

A new method of evaluation for functional assessment of the shoulder during daily activity is presented. An ambulatory system using inertial sensors attached on the humerus was used to detect the ability to work at a specific position of the shoulder. Nine arm positions were defined based on humerus elevation. The method was tested on 31 healthy volunteer subjects. First, we estimated the ability of the system to detect the different elevation angles and arm positions of each subject. Following that, we evaluated their arm positions during approximately 8h of daily activities. Each arm positio…

Chromosome arm-specific multicolor FISH.

Several systems for 24-color fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) have been developed and applied to karyotyping and detection of chromosomal abnormalities. We have developed a 42-color multicolor FISH (mFISH) technique (armFISH), which permits the detection of chromosomal aberrations at the resolution of chromosome arms. The armFISH uses a commercially available mFISH reagent kit (24XCyte, MetaSystems GmbH) supplemented with a set of differentially labeled chromosome arm-specific painting probes (arm-kit, comprising either p- or q-arms of all human chromosomes, except the p-arm of the ac…

[Lymphophlebographic studies in arm edema].

Using the results of single and bicollector lymphography noticeable pathological vascular changes of the posterolateral and anteromedial collectors with the prevalence of a complete blocks of the lymph flow were found in 64 patients with the postmastectomy syndrome. The vessels were blocked on the shoulder level in 65%, in the irradiation zone in 22% and on the forearm in 13% of cases. The lymph outflow in secondary edema of the upper limb was compensated for at the expense of the 2nd order vessels (45%), collateral detours (18.4%), junctions between the superficial collectors (30.6%), between…
