Ascariasis, a review.

Ascariasis no longer widespread within Europe and so experience in diagnosis and treatment is limited for many specialists. On the other hand, clinicians face increasing numbers of migrants from high prevalence countries and are therefore, challenged to update in this field of infectious diseases. Here we present imaging features and current knowledge of this infection.

Ascaris and ascariasis.

In recent years much new information has been obtained about the epidemiology, population biology and public health significance of infections of Ascaris lumbricoides in humans. Results from experimental infections of A. suum in pigs have helped to elucidate the observations made in the community on human ascariasis. The main purpose of the review is to see how new information may contribute to further acceptance of ascariasis as a serious contributor to ill-health and so to the design and implementation of sustainable control programmes intended to reduce the morbidity due to infection with A…

Ascariasis and hookworm.

Ascariasis and hookworm (ancylostomiasis) remain the most common intestinal nematodes in the world with significant economic, social, and medical impact. An understanding of the transmission and pathogenesis of ascariasis and hookworm are necessary to recognize their clinical manifestations and to manage the pulmonary sequelae of infection. Transmission occurs predominantly in the tropics and rural areas where there is suboptimal sanitation, personal hygiene, and education regarding these parasites. Ascariasis generally occurs through hand-to-mouth ingestion of agricultural products or food co…

Ascariasis of the kidney.

The very rare occurrence of ascariasis of the kidney is reported in a 6-year-old boy from Cape Town, South Africa. He was acutely ill with pyonephrosis and passed adult Ascaris lumbricoides per urethra before having a nephrectomy. There was no evidence of a fistula between the intestines and the urinary system, and as the development of larvae into mature helminths within the renal system is not considered to be possible it is likely that mature worms gained entrance through the urethra. It appears that the worms obstructed the right ureter and caused hydronephrosis, pyonephrosis, and depositi…

The prevalence of Ascariasis.

The common roundworm, Ascaris lumbricoides, is probably the most prevalent human intestinal helminth. Previous estimates of world prevalence range from around 650 million to 1000 million. By a detailed literature search, David Crompton now confirms the upper figure - estimating a world prevalence of 1008 million representing about 22% of the world population. The infection is known from 153 out of 218 recognized countries.
