Disease characteristics and mortality among Asian women with breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Asian women with breast cancer are often studied in aggregate, belying significant intragroup diversity. The authors sought to examine differences in breast cancer characteristics and outcomes among Asian women. METHODS: Asian, non-Hispanic Black, Hispanic, and non-Hispanic White women aged 18 years and older who were diagnosed with breast cancer from 1990 to 2016 were identified in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results 18 database. Asian patients were subclassified as Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Filipino, Vietnamese, South Asian (Asian Indian or Pakistani), Southeast Asi

Examination of the "model minority" stereotype through ethnicity and sexual orientation heterogeneity among Asian American youth.

INTRODUCTION: The "model minority" stereotype disguises heterogeneity among Asian American youth, many of whom are harmed by policies and attitudes that assume this population to be uniformly high achieving and "problem free." The current study uses an intersectional lens to disaggregate this population by ethnicity and sexual orientation subgroups to demonstrate differences in academic performance and substance use behavior among Asian American youth. This study also investigates the extent to which racial/ethnicity and sexual orientation-based bullying may explain such links. METHODS: Parti

Ethnic disparities in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease and clinical outcomes.

BACKGROUND: While metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) has become increasingly prevalent worldwide, multi-ethnic differences within a shared geography and lifestyle, have not been fully examined. What remains poorly characterized are the clinical outcomes for ethnic minorities in the U.S., particularly Asians and Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders (NHPI), compared with White people/persons/person. METHODS: Adults (aged ≥18 years) diagnosed with MASLD between January 2008 and December 2018 were identified in the TriNetX national database using the ICD-10 codes an

The prevalence of eye disease in Leicester: a comparison of adults of Asian and European descent.

Random samples of people aged 40 years and over were drawn from lists of patients registered with two neighbouring inner-city general practices: one predominantly with Asian patients and the other predominantly with European patients. The people selected were invited to attend specially arranged eye clinics for examination by an ophthalmologist and an optician. We examined 377 people and found that, compared to people of European descent, Asians had a significantly higher prevalence of age-related cataract: 30% compared to 3% in people aged under 60 years and 78% compared to 54% in those aged

A new polygenic score for refractive error improves detection of children at risk of high myopia but not the prediction of those at risk of myopic macular degeneration.

BACKGROUND: High myopia (HM), defined as a spherical equivalent refractive error (SER) ≤ -6.00 diopters (D), is a leading cause of sight impairment, through myopic macular degeneration (MMD). We aimed to derive an improved polygenic score (PGS) for predicting children at risk of HM and to test if a PGS is predictive of MMD after accounting for SER. METHODS: The PGS was derived from genome-wide association studies in participants of UK Biobank, CREAM Consortium, and Genetic Epidemiology Research on Adult Health and Aging. MMD severity was quantified by a deep learning algorithm. Prediction of

Valuation of emotion underlies cultural variation in cardiovascular stress responses.

Cultural context shapes individuals' valuation of emotions. Although studies have documented cultural differences in beliefs about the utility of negative emotions, little is known about how such cultural valuation is associated with physiological stress responses. In the present work, we examined whether East Asians and European Americans differ in how they value nervousness in a demanding situation and whether such valuation predicts acute cardiovascular responses. We found that East Asians were more likely than European Americans to believe feeling nervous in a demanding situation was usefu

Obstetric trauma and its association with race and immigration: a population-based cohort study in Ontario, Canada.

BACKGROUND: The factors involved in the association between obstetric trauma and the race of the birthing parent are uncertain. We sought to … han among White people (4.9%). After adjustment, the risk of obstetric trauma remained higher among Asian people (adjusted relative risk [RR] 1.46, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.40 to 1.52) and lower among Black people (adjusted RR 0.86, 95% CI 0.78 to 0.94) than among White people. The association between race and obstetric trauma varied by immigration statu …

Sundadonty Revisited: Dental Evidence Supports a Mixed East Asian and Australo-Melanesian Ancestry for Southeast Asians.

OBJECTIVES: C.G. Turner divided the "Mongoloid" dental complex into Sinodonty and Sundadonty, but it remains unclear if the latter is a distinct complex or the product of Holocene gene flow between East Asians and the earlier inhabitants of Southeast Asia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Dental data for 863 individuals representing 16 populations from East Asia, Southeast Asia, Australo-Melanesia, and the Pacific were investigated. Three methods were employed: rASUDAS2 analysis based on a naïve Bayesian algorithm to classify individuals into clusters, the R-matrix approach to obtain dij distances, FST

Disaggregating the Asian-American Breast Cancer Population: Disparities in Reconstruction Rates.

INTRODUCTION: Breast cancer (BC) incidence has been increasing among Asian-Americans (AsAms); recent data suggest these patients are less likely to undergo postmastectomy breast reconstruction (PMBR) compared to non-Asian women. Historically, AsAm BC patients are reported in aggregate, masking heterogeneity within this population. We aim to identify patterns of postmastectomy reconstruction among disaggregated AsAm BC patients at our institution. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed for BC patients who underwent mastectomy between 2017 and 2021. Patient demographic and clinical

Driver mutation impact in Chinese hepatocellular carcinoma.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains a leading cause of cancer mortality in China. The Chinese Liver Cancer Atlas (CLCA) recently reported whole-genome sequencing of 494 HCC tumors, nominating 23 coding and 31 non-coding driver candidates based on combined P values across multiple algorithms. However, the statistical significance of recurrence alone does not distinguish functionally impactful drivers from neutral passengers. We therefore analyzed cancer effects in the CLCA dataset, quantifying the selective advantage conferred by each mutation. Whole-genome mutation calls from CLCA were anal

Invisibility as a structural determinant: Mortality outcomes of Asians and Pacific Islanders experiencing homelessness.

INTRODUCTION: Asians and Pacific Islanders (APIs) who are experiencing homelessness are situated in a social intersection that has rendered them unrecognized and therefore vulnerable. There has been increasing attention to racial disparities in homelessness, but research into API homelessness is exceedingly rare, despite rapidly growing populations. The purpose of this study is to examine the causes of death among APIs who died while homeless in Santa Clara County (SCC) and compare these causes to other racial groups. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We report on data obtained from the SCC Medical Exam

Influence of ethnic origin on the incidence of keratoconus and associated atopic disease in Asians and white patients.

PURPOSE: To investigate the influence of ethnic origin on the incidence of keratoconus and the association of atopic diseases in patients with keratoconus. METHODS: Retrospective study of new patients referred to Dewsbury District General Hospital and diagnosed with keratoconus in a 6-year period between 1994 and 2000. The ethnic origin of the patient was defined as white, Asian, or other. Incidence was calculated from the catchment population of 176 774 (82% white people, 17% Asians, 1% others). t-Test, confidence intervals and chi2 tests were used to show statistical significance. RESULTS:

Ethnic differences in the relationship between insulin sensitivity and insulin response: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Human blood glucose levels have likely evolved toward their current point of stability over hundreds of thousands of years. The robust population stability of this trait is called canalization. It has been represented by a hyperbolic function of two variables: insulin sensitivity and insulin response. Environmental changes due to global migration may have pushed some human subpopulations to different points of stability. We hypothesized that there may be ethnic differences in the optimal states in the relationship between insulin sensitivity and insulin response. RESEARCH DESIGN AN

Parkinson's disease genetics across diverse ancestries: an observational genetic study of causal and risk variants with translational implications.

BACKGROUND: The genetic architecture of Parkinson's disease varies considerably across ancestries, yet most previous genetic studies have focused on individuals of European ancestry. We aimed to characterise the distribution of established Parkinson's disease causal variants, as well as risk-associated variants with clinical implications (ie, variants in genes involved in pathways targeted by ongoing clinical trials), across ancestrally diverse populations. METHODS: We conducted a multi-ancestry, observational, cross-sectional genetic study using retrospective data from the Global Parkinson's

Implementing and evaluating culturally relevant dance opportunities for people living with dementia in historically excluded and racialised communities: a qualitative case study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Engagement with the arts is advocated to reduce stigma and to increase the social inclusion of people living with dementia since the arts powerfully support non-verbal communication, affect and the opportunity to participate in activities that are meaningful to self and others. An example is Sharing Dance Older Adults (SDOA), an innovative, community dance programme that is offered by Canada's National Ballet School (NBS) intended to support social inclusion by making dance accessible to older adults with a range of physical and cognitive abilities, including people living with dem
