[Pregnancy and fetal outcome after cessation of oral contraceptives (author's transl)].

In a total of 4149 prenatal patients there were 849 patients who became pregnant following the cessation of the use of oral contraceptives. … idence of premature birth, perinatal mortality, congenital anomalies, the frequency of twins and of asphyxia neonatorum were similar in both groups. A special group of 107 pregnancies occurring immediatly after cessation of the pill shows no higher risks in pregnancy, during birth or with regard to fetal outcome. An exception is made by the incidence of premature bir …

Cardiovascular responses to mild perinatal asphyxia in growth-restricted preterm lambs.

Growth-restricted neonates have worse outcomes after perinatal asphyxia, with more severe metabolic acidosis than appropriately grown neonates. The cardiovascular physiology associated with fetal growth restriction (FGR) may alter their response to asphyxia. However, research on asphyxia in FGR is limited. Here we compared cardiovascular hemodynamics in preterm FGR and control lambs during mild perinatal asphyxia. We induced FGR in one twin at 89 days gestation (term 148 days), while the other served as a control. At 126 days gestation, lambs were instrumented to allow arterial blood pressure

[Asphyxia and hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy].

Hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy is a common cause of death and disability in newborns. Brain damage related to a perinatal insult is the result of a dynamic process, and its progressing development over time allows for specific interventions to reduce total damage, as described in this review. Despite therapeutic hypothermia which currently is the only treatment available, a considerable number of newborns still have adverse outcomes. Prognosis is evaluated by clinical examination and paraclinical investigations. There is still a need for novel treatments and better prognostic and diagnostic

Association of consanguinity with neonatal asphyxia at birth: Evidence from Pakistan.

Consanguinity commonly known as inbreeding is a state of offspring borne to couple sharing same ancestors. It is a least researched non-obstetric determinant of adverse birth outcome in developing countries like Pakistan. This hospital based study was designed to investigate the association between consanguineous status and neonatal asphyxia measured measured as low APGAR scores after birth in 879 newborns. The data regarding consanguineous status was obtained retrospectively. Potential covariates were incorporated for finding confounding effects. Data was analyzed in SPSS version 26.0 as mean

The role of the placenta in perinatal asphyxia, neonatal encephalopathy, and neurodevelopmental outcome: A review.

Perinatal asphyxia contributes significantly to neonatal deaths globally. This may occur due to the effects of various phenomena like uterine rupture, infections, maternal hemodynamic compromise (amniotic fluid embolus), placenta, and umbilical cord (umbilical cord knot, placental abruption, or compression). Perinatal asphyxia is the term used for interrupted blood flow or the exchange of gases in the fetus during the prenatal period. The reduced oxygenation induces a cascade of brain injuries, resulting in long-term damage to the infant's brain. Some infants exposed to perinatal hypoxia-ische

Transition to extrauterine life and the modeling of perinatal asphyxia in rats.

Generation of murine models for the study of birth-related pathologies has proven to be a complex and controversial problem. Differences in the relative timing of developmental events of both species have led some researchers to suggest that the rat is born comparatively less developed than the human. The solution proposed to this problem would consist in the delay of the experiments of perinatal asphyxia (PA), usually up to 7-10 days, allowing developmental levels to "equalize" with the human at birth. This solution generates a new set of problems. The developmental milestones in both species

Inter-observer reliability for amplitude-integrated electroencephalography in the newborn with perinatal asphyxia.

INTRODUCTION: Amplitude integrated electroencephalography (aEEG) is a tool widely used for neuromonitoring in the critical neonate. In the patient with perinatal asphyxia, its interpretation is key to identifying candidates for therapeutic hypothermia, detecting subclinical seizures and providing pronostic information. Our aim was to analyze the concordance in the interpretation of aEEG among neonatologists with different levels of experience. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Unicenter retrospective study of newborns ≥ 35 weeks with perinatal asphyxia included consecutively over a two-year period and mo

Effect of therapeutic hypothermia on renal and myocardial function in asphyxiated (near) term neonates: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Therapeutic hypothermia (TH) is a well-established neuroprotective therapy applied in (near) term asphyxiated infants. However, little is known regarding the effects of TH on renal and/or myocardial function. OBJECTIVES: To describe the short- and long-term effects of TH on renal and myocardial function in asphyxiated (near) term neonates. METHODS: An electronic search strategy incorporating MeSH terms and keywords was performed in October 2019 and updated in June 2020 using PubMed and Cochrane databases. Inclusion criteria consisted of a RCT or observational cohort design, inter

Effect of Music on Outcomes of Birth Asphyxia: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Birth asphyxia may cause neuro-developmental impairment in the affected newborns especially those who had hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. Music therapy has been observed to help in reducing pain and stress in newborns and improve neurodevelopmental outcome. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study is to determine the effects of music therapy on the outcomes of birth asphyxia. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial involving 3095 newborns born between January 2013 and August 2019 with birth asphyxia was conducted in the neonatal intensive care unit of Burdwan Medical College. Th

Development and Impact of Helping Babies Breathe Educational Methodology.

The educational pedagogy surrounding Helping Babies Breathe (HBB) has been transformative in going beyond a curriculum focused only on basic neonatal resuscitation; indeed, it created the framework for an educational program that has served as a model for replication for other impactful programs, such as the Helping Mothers Survive and other Helping Babies Survive curricula. The tenets of HBB include incorporation of innovative learning strategies such as small group discussion, skills-based learning, simulation and debriefing, and peer-to-peer learning, all of which begin the hard work of cha
