Life science research in extreme environments: a conversation with astronaut Jessica Meir.

Jessica Meir is a NASA astronaut, marine biologist, and physiologist. She flew for the first time to the International Space Station (ISS) in 2019 where she served as a flight engineer for Expedition 61/62. Before becoming an astronaut, her scientific career focused on the physiology of animals in extreme environments. She studied the diving physiology of emperor penguins in Antarctica and elephant seals in Northern California during her Ph.D., and she worked with high-flying bar-headed geese during her postdoctoral research. As an astronaut, she has extensive experience developing, teaching,

Rear Admiral (Astronaut) Alan Shepard: Ménière's disease and the race to the moon.

On May 5, 1961, Alan B. Shepard Jr. piloted the Freedom 7 craft into a suborbital flight to become the first American man in space. His promising astronautical career was soon scuttled by spells of dizziness and tinnitus later diagnosed as Ménière's disease, until William F. House-considered the father of neurotology and a pioneer in surgery for vestibular schwannomas-intervened. In 1968 House implanted an endolymphatic-subarachnoid shunt, which at the time was a virtually experimental procedure. Shepard's debilitating Ménière's disease was cured, but not quite in time for him to pilot the doo

Nausea, Autonomic Function, and the Astronauts: Concepts, Findings, and Applications to GIMD Patient Care.

BACKGROUND: Nausea and vomiting, whether acute or chronic, often result from disturbances in the central, autonomic, and enteric nervous systems. Both space motion sickness and gastrointestinal motility disorders share overlapping mechanisms involving autonomic dysfunction, abnormal gastric myoelectric activity, and delayed gastric emptying. Conventional medical and surgical treatments often provide incomplete relief or cause undesirable side effects, which has encouraged investigation into nonpharmacologic approaches. AIMS: This study evaluates the therapeutic potential of Autogenic Feedback

Predictions of cognitive detriments from galactic cosmic ray exposures to astronauts on exploration missions.

For the first-time we report on predictions on cognitive detriments from galactic cosmic ray (GCR) exposures on long-duration space missions outside the protection of the Earth's magnetosphere and solid body shielding. Estimates are based on a relative risk (RR) model of the fluence response for proton and heavy ion in rodent studies using the widely used novel object recognition (NOR) test, which estimates detriments in recognition or object memory. Our recent meta-analysis showed that linear and linear-quadratic dose response models were not accurate, while exponential increasing fluence res

Dilated Prelaminar Paravascular Spaces as a Possible Mechanism for Optic Disc Edema in Astronauts.

INTRODUCTION: A number of ophthalmic abnormalities, including optic disc edema, have been reported in several astronauts involved in long-duration spaceflights. An increased understanding of factors contributing to this syndrome, initially designated visual impairment and intracranial pressure syndrome and recently renamed spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome, has become a high priority for ESA and NASA, especially in view of future long-duration missions, including trips to Mars. The underlying pathophysiological mechanisms of this syndrome are still not well understood. In the presen

Space radiation does not induce a significant increase of intrachromosomal exchanges in astronauts' lymphocytes.

Chromosome aberration analysis in astronauts has been used to provide direct, biologically motivated estimates of equivalent doses and risk associated to cosmic radiation exposure during space flight. However, the past studies concentrated on measurements of dicentrics and translocations, while chromosome intrachanges (inversions) have never been measured in astronauts' samples. Recent data reported in the literature suggest that densely ionizing radiation can induce a large fraction of intrachanges, thus leading to the suspicion that interchanges grossly underestimate the cosmic radiation-ind

Effects of the space environment and re-adaptation to Earth's gravity on astronauts' plasma proteome.

We performed a label-free quantitative plasma proteomic analysis on samples from eight astronauts who completed a 6-month mission aboard the International Space Station, using an Orbitrap Fusion Lumos mass spectrometer (MS). Blood samples were collected from each astronaut at different times, i.e., pre-flight, in-flight, and post-flight. We found that the abundance levels of 16 proteins were significantly altered (p ≤ 0.05), particularly in the in-flight samples. The functions of these 16 proteins are associated with four major pathways that pose health risks to astronauts: impairment of the i

The influence of spaceflight on the astronaut salivary microbiome and the search for a microbiome biomarker for viral reactivation.

BACKGROUND: Spaceflight impacts astronauts in many ways but little is known on how spaceflight affects the salivary microbiome and the consequences of these changes on astronaut health, such as viral reactivation. In order to understand this, the salivary microbiome was analyzed with 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, and saliva viral titers were analyzed with quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) with primers specific for Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), herpes simplex virus (HSV), and varicella zoster virus (VZV) from 10 astronauts pre-flight, in-flight, and post-flight. RESULTS: Streptoco

Statistical Evaluation of Causal Factors Associated with Astronaut Shoulder Injury in Space Suits.

INTRODUCTION: Shoulder injuries due to working inside the space suit are some of the most serious and debilitating injuries astronauts encounter. Space suit injuries occur primarily in the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory (NBL) underwater training facility due to accumulated musculoskeletal stress. We quantitatively explored the underlying causal mechanisms of injury. METHODS: Logistic regression was used to identify relevant space suit components, training environment variables, and anthropometric dimensions related to an increased propensity for space-suited injury. Two groups of subjects were a

Space Radiation and Cancer Risk in Astronauts: Models, Evidence, Uncertainties, and Emerging Imaging Perspectives.

Cancer risk estimation remains one of the main unresolved challenges in human spaceflight beyond low Earth orbit, where astronauts are exposed to galactic cosmic rays, solar particle events, and high-linear energy transfer (high-LET) secondary radiation. This narrative review summarizes the principal quantitative models used to estimate radiation-induced cancer risk in astronauts, including particle fluence-based cross-sections, mixture models, risk of exposure-induced death (REID)-based operational frameworks, uncertainty distribution approaches, and ensemble models. Early studies estimated 1

Extreme physical inactivity alters iron metabolism: mechanisms and health issues for astronauts and bedridden patients.

Iron is a biologically indispensable yet potentially harmful element: essential for numerous metabolic processes but toxic in excess, potentially leading to organ damage. Under conditions of extreme physical inactivity, such as microgravity or prolonged bed-rest, physical deconditioning occurs, adversely affecting functional capacities and health. Anaemia and muscle atrophy may contribute to systemic iron redistribution, as red blood cells and skeletal muscle collectively concentrate most body iron. Here we summarize a decade of research conducted in rodent and human ground-based models to inv

Impact of Prolonged Spaceflight on Orthostatic Tolerance During Ambulation and Blood Pressure Profiles in Astronauts.

BACKGROUND: Astronauts returning to earth usually demonstrate reduced orthostatic tolerance when assessed on a tilt table or quiet standing, but no studies have evaluated postflight orthostatic tolerance during activities of daily living, when it is most clinically relevant. Ambulatory blood pressure (BP) variability also is associated with orthostatic intolerance in certain patient populations and can capture clinically significant orthostatic hypotension during activities of daily living, especially when measured on a beat-to-beat basis. We evaluated the impact of prolonged spaceflight on or

[Cytogenetic effect in lymphocytes in astronauts after 2 lengthy flights on board MIR orbital station].

The cytogenetic analysis of peripheric blood of cosmonauts who participated in the 196- and 194-day Mir missions evidenced increases in the number of aberrant cells and the rate of chromosomal aberrations. However, in most cases these were not statistically significant as compared to control values. Nonetheless, the lesions in cell chromosomal apparatus can amplify the risk of delayed consequences of exposure to ionizing radiation.

Feasibility of Real-Time Astronaut Eye-Tracking During Analog Extravehicular Activities.

INTRODUCTION: As lunar missions increase in frequency and duration, astronauts will conduct more extravehicular activities (EVAs) under demanding conditions that elevate workload, reduce situational awareness, and heighten the risk of operational errors. Despite extensive use in other high-risk fields, eye-tracking technology has not yet been applied to assess gaze behavior during EVAs. We evaluated the feasibility of using mobile eye-tracking within analog EVA suits, focusing on implementation, data quality, livestreaming capability, and the ability to compare gaze behavior across tasks and s

Human-like acceleration and deceleration control of a robot astronaut floating in a space station.

The acceleration and deceleration (AD) motions are the basic motion modes of robot astronauts moving in a space station. Controlling the locomotion of the robot astronaut is very challenging due to the strong nonlinearity of its complex multi-body dynamics in a gravity-free environment. However, after training, humans can move well in space stations by pushing the bulkhead, and the motion mechanism of humans is a good reference for robot astronauts. The contribution of this study is modeling the human AD motion in a microgravity environment and proposing a human-like control method for robot a
