Asymptomatic Leishmania infections in northern India: a threat for the elimination programme?

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) continues to embody as a mammoth public health problem and hurdle to the socioeconomic development of Bihar, India. Interestingly, all leishmanial infections do not lead to overt clinical disease and may stay asymptomatic for a period of time. Asymptomatic cases of VL are considered as probable potential reservoirs of VL, and thus can play a major role in transmission of the disease in highly endemic areas of Bihar, India. They outnumber the exact disease burden in endemic areas of this region, thus jeopardizing the goal of the elimination program that is due by 201

A possible link between subtype 2 and asymptomatic infections of Blastocystis hominis.

Blastocystis hominis is one of the most common eukaryotic organisms in the intestinal tract of humans, while its pathogenic potential is still controversial. A total of 286 stool samples obtained from adult and pediatric patients with or without gastrointestinal symptoms in two hospitals in Manisa, Turkey, were cultured to detect B. hominis infection. Forty-one and 51 isolates were obtained from the adults and children, respectively, and these isolates were subjected to subtyping by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with the known sequence-tagged site primers. The correlation between the genotyp

Sinus Arrest in Asymptomatic COVID-19 Infection.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a viral respiratory tract syndrome capable of affecting a multitude of major organs in the human body. It is a known cause of severe vascular compromise, myocardial ischemia, myocarditis, and various cardiac dysrhythmias. Dysfunction of the sinoatrial (SA) node, the primary pacemaker of the heart, can arise from structural heart disease, medications, electrolyte abnormalities, and hypothyroidism. We report and discuss a case of a 50-year-old female with no significant past medical history (PMH) and no SA dysfunction risk factors, who experienced multiple

Evaluating the frequency of asymptomatic Ebola virus infection.

The potential for asymptomatic infection from Ebola viruses has long been questioned. Knowing the proportion of infections that are asymptomatic substantially changes the predictions made by mathematical models and alters the corresponding decisions based upon these models. To assess the degree of asymptomatic infection occurring during an Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak, we carried out a serological survey in the Djera district of the Equateur province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo affected by an Ebola outbreak in 2014. We sampled all asymptomatic residents (n = 182) of 48 househ

Asymptomatic infection and risk factors for leptospirosis in Nicaragua.

As part of an investigation of a 1995 outbreak of leptospirosis in Nicaragua, a cross-sectional serologic survey was conducted in the town of El Sauce. Of 566 persons, 85 (15%) were positive for IgM anti-Leptospira antibodies, indicating recent leptospirosis infection. Asymptomatic leptospirosis infection was common, with only 25 (29.4%) of the 85 seropositive inhabitants reporting a febrile illness in the 2 months before the survey. Multivariable analysis revealed that having an indoor water source remained independently protective against leptospirosis. Gathering wood was independently assoc

Asymptomatic inflammation and/or infection in benign prostatic hyperplasia.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the extent, pattern and clinical significance of asymptomatic histological inflammation and latent infection (National Institute of Health Category IV prostatitis) in benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study included 80 patients (from a cohort of 100 consecutive potentially eligible subjects) with a diagnosis of BPH, but no history or symptoms of prostatitis. Histological sections were obtained from specimens collected prospectively at transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), immunostained for leukocyte common antigen and scanned using

Breaking the asymptomatic phase of HIV-1 infection.

AIDS typically consists of three phases: (1) an acute, infectious mononucleosis-like syndrome followed by (2) a prolonged asymptomatic stage ending in (3) the appearance of frank AIDS. The asymptomatic phase may last for years and its presence suggests a persistent conflagration between the virus and the host's immune response. There is considerable evidence that an immune response develops but the response is ultimately inadequate. From the work of others as well as our own, we have constructed a hypothesis which attempts to explain some aspects of the immune response. We propose that HIV-1 p

Depression and neuropsychological performance in asymptomatic HIV infection.

OBJECTIVE: The authors examined the effect of depression on neuropsychological performance in HIV-infected men. Previous studies have suggested that depression may account for the neuropsychological abnormalities observed in some patients with HIV infection, but few studies have specifically examined this question. METHOD: An extensive neuropsychological test battery was administered to 121 HIV-seropositive asymptomatic men and 42 HIV-seronegative comparison subjects. The seropositive subjects were grouped into depressed and non-depressed groups on the basis of scores on the Beck Depression I

Estimation of undetected asymptomatic infections of COVID-19: a mathematical modeling approach.

The accurate quantification of asymptomatic infections is crucial for understanding and mitigating the spread of COVID-19. However, estimating the true prevalence of asymptomatic cases remains a significant challenge. This study introduces a novel mathematical modeling approach to estimate key epidemiological parameters associated with asymptomatic infections, leveraging comprehensive COVID-19 data from the Republic of Korea. We develop a refined compartmental model that explicitly incorporates asymptomatic individuals and employs a trajectory matching method, integrating least-squares fitting…

Asymptomatic Low-Density Plasmodium falciparum Infections: Parasites Under the Host's Immune Radar?

A large body of evidence suggests that low parasite carriage in Plasmodium falciparum asymptomatic infection is required for the maintenance of malaria immunity. However, the fact that treating such infections has little to no impact on subsequent clinical malaria is rarely noted. In this paper, we review data and argue that low-density parasite carriage in asymptomatic infection may not support host immune processes and that parasites are virtually under the host's immunological radar. We also discuss factors that may be constraining parasitemia in asymptomatic infections from reaching the th…

Global prevalence of asymptomatic dengue infections - a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: The burden of asymptomatic dengue infections is understudied. Therefore, we systematically reviewed the literature to estimate the global prevalence of asymptomatic dengue infections. METHODS: We searched cross-sectional studies reporting the prevalence of asymptomatic dengue infections from PubMed, Scopus, and Embase. Prevalence of asymptomatic dengue infections was pooled and reported as proportions with a 95% confidence interval (CI). This systematic review protocol was a priori registered in The International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (Reg: No. CRD42020218446)

Anti-folate quintuple mutations in Plasmodium falciparum asymptomatic infections in Yaoundé, Cameroon.

A major challenge in the fight to effectively control malaria is the emergence of resistant parasite to drugs used in therapy as well as for chemoprevention. In this study, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with Plasmodium falciparum resistance to sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP), one of the partner drugs in artemisinin-based therapies (ACTs) were studied in asymptomatic P. falciparum isolates from Cameroon. Dried Blood spots were collected from children with asymptomatic malaria enrolled during a household survey. The P. falciparum dihydrofolate reductase (Pfdhfr), dihydropteroa

Defining symptoms of malaria in India in an era of asymptomatic infections.

BACKGROUND: Malaria is a major public health problem in India. Data from surveys totaling 3031 participants at three sites revealed a high proportion of asymptomatic infections, complicating diagnosis. The aim of this study was to identify differences in complaints and symptoms between sites, and factors associated with asymptomatic Plasmodium infections. METHODS: Published data from community-based cross-sectional studies conducted between 2012 and 2015 in Nadiad (Gujarat), Chennai (Tamil Nadu), and Rourkela (Odisha) as part of the Center for the Study of Complex Malaria in India were analys…

Influence of asymptomatic infections for the effectiveness of facemasks during pandemic influenza.

In this paper, the SEIR model is generalized by introducing an asymptomatic class to quantify the influence of wearing N95 facemasks in reducing the spread of influenza H1N1. What's more, we explain the control reproduction number Rc according to the biological meaning reasonably. Without any intervention, the basic reproduction number R0=1.83 and there will be a large outbreak of infectious diseases. If N95 facemasks are 50% effective in reducing susceptibility and infectivity, 50% of population wear them on the first day, the basic reproduction number will be decreased from 1.83 to 1.17 and

Serological diagnosis and follow-up of asymptomatic and acute Q fever infections.

During an outbreak of Q fever at a farmer's market in Soest (North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) in 2003, we examined 263 serum samples of presumably infected persons for Q fever antibodies. One hundred and seventy-one of these patients were tested positive for acute Q fever infection. Furthermore, 29 persons of certain risk groups like pregnant women (n=11) or patients with valvular heart disease (n=18) were examined. Among these, in four pregnant women and two heart patients an acute but asymptomatic infection could be diagnosed. With 30 patients we performed a serological follow-up for 8-60 we

Immune pathogenesis of asymptomatic chlamydia trachomatis infections in the female genital tract.

Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) infections of the female genital tract, although frequently asymptomatic, are a major cause of fallopian-tube occlusion and infertility. Early stage pregnancy loss may also be due to an unsuspected and undetected CT infection. In vitro and in vivo studies have demonstrated that this organism can persist in the female genital tract in a form undetectable by culture. The mechanism of tubal damage as well as the rejection of an embryo may involve an initial immune sensitization to the CT 60 kD heat shock protein (HSP), followed by a reactivation of HSP-sensitized lympho

Zika Virus Infection in Asymptomatic Pregnant Women.

Background/Objectives: Zika disease is caused by the Zika virus (ZIKV) and represents a major public health problem because of the complications in newborn babies from mothers who were infected during pregnancy. It is estimated that 80% of infected pregnant women are asymptomatic, which complicates the identification of infected individuals. In this study, we aimed to detect ZIKV in asymptomatic pregnant women and the effects in the newborns were analyzed. Methods: The presence of ZIKV was evaluated through endpoint reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) in 114 blood samples
