An evoked potential (EP) test was developed to aid in the diagnostic evaluation of a 16-week-old infant of initially unknown pathology and degree of perceptual deficit. Patterned stimuli were presented at two repetition rates to challenge the infant's visual and auditory information processing capabilities. The data were compared to those obtained from a "normal" infant of the same age and sex and, where possible, to normative population data. The EP data indicated the following: (1) the "suspect" infant's occipital response to visual pattern was abnormal in terms of waveform characteristics a

This is a case of a pediatric patient with a history of neurofibromatosis I (NFI) presenting to the emergency department secondary to a suicide attempt via self-strangulation after being verbally and physically bullied at school. Upon hospital admission, the 10-year-old patient was found to have significant auditory and visual perceptual hallucinations in addition to suicidal ideations, for which psychiatry was consulted. The patient underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain to evaluate for intracranial neurofibromas as a potential etiology of his behavior. There is evidence that

BACKGROUND: Hearing efficiency is known to influence and interact with communication and mental health. Hearing impairment may be hidden when co-occurring with neurological disorders.
PURPOSE: We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis in order to address the following questions: 1) which specific tools of auditory processing show clear deficits, separating Temporal Lobe Epilepsy (TLE) patients from normal controls,2) How well is TLE evaluated in terms of hearing and auditory processing?
METHODS: The study inclusion criteria were: 1) patients diagnosed with temporal lobe epilepsy, 2)

Perception concerns the identification and interpretation of sensory stimuli in our external environment. The purpose of this review is to survey contemporary views about effects of mild to severe sensorineural hearing impairment (HI) in children on perceptual processing. The review is one of a series of papers resulting from a workshop on Outcomes Research in Children with Hearing Loss sponsored by The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders/National Institutes of Health. Children with HI exhibit heterogeneous patterns of results. In general, however, perceptual proce

Auditory processing abnormalities are a prominent feature of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), significantly affecting sensory integration, communication, and social interaction. This review delves into the neurobiological mechanisms underlying these deficits, including structural and functional disruptions in the auditory cortex, imbalances in excitatory and inhibitory signaling, and synaptic dysfunction. Genetic contributions from mutations in CNTNAP2, SHANK3, FMR1, and FOXP2 are explored, highlighting their roles in auditory abnormalities. Animal models, such as BTBRT+tf/J mice (BTBR) and val

Hallucinations are a core feature of several psychiatric disorders, but the circuit mechanisms that separate perception from behavioral output remain poorly defined. Here, we combined an auditory discrimination task with AI-based pose analysis to quantify S-ketamine-induced false auditory threat responses and behavioral disorganization in mice. Control assays, including sucrose preference, loss of righting reflex, and prepulse inhibition, indicated that these effects were not explained by anhedonia, anesthesia, or basic auditory deficits. Using in vivo fiber photometry, single-cell miniscope c

BACKGROUND: A limited number of experiments have investigated the perception of strain compared to the voice qualities of breathiness and roughness despite its widespread occurrence in patients who have hyperfunctional voice disorders, adductor spasmodic dysphonia, and vocal fold paralysis among others.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to determine the perceptual basis of strain through identification and exploration of acoustic and psychoacoustic measures.
METHODS: Twelve listeners evaluated the degree of strain for 28 dysphonic phonation samples on a five-point rating scale task. Co

PURPOSE: Listening difficulty (LiD), often classified as auditory processing disorder (APD), has been studied in both research and clinic settings. The aim of this study was to examine the predictive relation between these two settings. In our SICLiD (Sensitive Indicators of Childhood Listening Difficulties) research study, children with normal audiometry, but caregiver-reported LiD, performed poorly on both listening and cognitive tests. Here, we examined results of clinical assessments and interventions for these children in relation to research performance.
METHOD: Study setting was a tert

According to the Generalized Hypervigilance Hypothesis (GHH) of McDermid et al., the unpleasantness of sensory stimuli, rather than their modality, determines whether they will be perceptually amplified in hypervigilant persons. In a test of this idea, ratings of the intensity of sensations evoked by cutaneous and auditory stimuli were obtained from individuals with chronic myofascial pain (fibromyalgia, temporomandibular disorders), and from (less hypervigilant) healthy control participants. In each modality, the stimuli spanned a wide intensity range, with the weakest stimuli being affective

The aim of the study was to assess the validity of the use of the battery of tests assessing higher auditory functions in the diagnostic process of APD in 6-year-old children. The study involved 1,012 Polish-speaking children aged 6 to 9 years with normal hearing sensitivity. The evaluation of auditory functions was performed using the ATS Neuroflow test battery comprising: Adaptive Speech in Noise test (ASPN-S), Dichotic Digits Test (DDT) and Frequency Pattern Test (FPT). Two groups were distinguished: the group"S" (Study) containing 880 participants with APD (participants who obtained abnorm

Developmental dyslexia (decoding-based reading disorder; RD) is a complex trait with multifactorial origins at the genetic, neural, and cognitive levels. There is evidence that low-level sensory-processing deficits precede and underlie phonological problems, which are one of the best-documented aspects of RD. RD is also associated with impairments in integrating visual symbols with their corresponding speech sounds. Although causal relationships between sensory processing, print-speech integration, and fluent reading, and their neural bases are debated, these processes all require precise timi

PURPOSE: This study collected measures of auditory-perceptual and oral somatosensory acuity in typically developing children and adolescents aged 9-15 years. We aimed to establish reference data that can be used as a point of comparison for individuals with residual speech sound disorder (RSSD), especially for RSSD affecting American English rhotics. We examined concurrent validity between tasks and hypothesized that performance on at least some tasks would show a significant association with age, reflecting ongoing refinement of sensory function in later childhood. We also tested for an inver

OBJECTIVES: Our laboratory recently identified the P85 gating ratio as a candidate biomarker for bipolar disorder. In order to evaluate the phenomenological significance of P85 gating, the current study examined reports of perceptual anomalies and their relationship to the P50 and P85 physiological measures of sensory gating.
METHODS: Reports of perceptual anomalies on the Structured Clinical Interview to Assess Perceptual Anomalies were compared in patients meeting DSM-IV criteria for paranoid schizophrenia (n = 66), schizoaffective disorder (n = 45), or bipolar I disorder (n = 42), and cont

The "temporal processing hypothesis" suggests that individuals with specific language impairments (SLIs) and dyslexia have severe deficits in processing rapidly presented or brief sensory information, both within the auditory and visual domains. This hypothesis has been supported through evidence that language-impaired individuals have excess auditory backward masking. This paper presents an analysis of masking results from several studies in terms of a model of temporal resolution. Results from this modeling suggest that the masking results can be better explained by an "auditory efficiency"

Viewed as a neural network disorder, mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (mTLE) may cause widespread deficits in human brain functions. Impairments in cognitive functions such as memory and language have been well addressed, but perceptual deficits have only been considered in terms of behavioral data. Little imaging research on perceptual deficits in mTLE has been reported. The present study is expected to reveal impairments in the perceptual networks in patients with mTLE using fMRI. The fMRI-based independent component analysis (ICA) was applied to 33 patients with mTLE and 33 matched healthy con

UNLABELLED: Task-free brain activity exhibits spontaneous fluctuations between functional states, characterized by synchronized activation patterns in distributed resting-state (RS) brain networks. The temporal dynamics of the networks' electrophysiological signatures reflect individual variations in brain activity and connectivity linked to mental states and cognitive functions and can predict or monitor vulnerability to develop psychiatric or neurological disorders. In particular, RS alpha fluctuations modulate perceptual sensitivity, attentional shifts, and cognitive control, and could ther
