OBJECTIVE: Incarcerated adolescents show a high prevalence rate of psychopathology and comorbid psychiatric conditions. Child and adolescent psychiatrists working in the penal system are confronted with the need to provide care and to develop specific treatment plans.

Dirofilaria repens, a common parasite of carnivore mammals, is transmitted by mosquitos and may also infect humans accidentally causing a subcutaneous dirofilariosis. Autochthonous infections of dogs, foxes or cats with D. repens has not been found in Austria so far; however, 12 cases of imported subcutaneous dirofilariosis in man were noticed between 1981 and 2005. The recent case report deals with the 13(th) human case, which has to be considered as the first autochthonously acquired in Austria.

INTRODUCTION: We performed this study in order to assess epidemiology and current practice of treatment of severe traumatic brain injury in Austria. Our survey followed the methods of a study published by J. Ghajar et al in the USA in 1995 and we compared the results to the Brain Trauma Foundation's "Guidelines For The Management Of Severe Head Injury".
METHODS: The collected data represent answers to telephone interviews of 60 surgical intensive care units. We were able to evaluate data from all departments which treat severe brain traumas (Glasgow Coma Scale < or = 8) in Austria.

The aim of any rubella eradication programme is the prevention of rubella embryopathy. In Austria, every girl aged 13 years is vaccinated without prior antibody testing. In addition, all pregnant women are tested for antibodies and vaccinated post partum, if necessary. As in other European countries, this policy has not (yet) led to the elimination of rubella embryopathies. The treatment of acute pancreatitis as currently practised in Austria was evaluated by means of a questionnaire mailed to all medical and surgical departments in Austrian hospitals. The clinical relevance of newly described nontuberculous mycobacteria is often unclear. We report a case of pulmonary infection caused by Mycobacterium hassiacum in an immunocompetent patient in Austria who had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Antimicrobial drug susceptibility testing showed low MICs for macrolides, aminoglycosides, fluoroquinolones, tetracyclines, imipenem, and linezolid.

BACKGROUND: Leptospirosis is one of the world's mostly spread zoonoses causing acute fever. Over years, leptospirosis has been reported to occur rarely in Austria and Germany (annual incidence of 0.06/100,000 in Germany). Only imported cases have been on the increase. Objectives of this case-series study were to retrospectively assess epidemiologic and clinical characteristics of leptospirosis illnesses in South-East Austria, to describe risk exposures for autochthonous infections, and to compare patients with imported versus autochthonous infection.

An unexpectedly high infection rate (26.1%) of tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) was identified in a herd of 257 horses of the same breed distributed among 3 federal states in Austria. Young age (p<0.001) and male sex (p=0.001) were positively associated with infection.

We assessed the prevalence of a range of psychopathology among African unaccompanied refugee minors (URMs) in Austria. Additionally, the predictive value of war exposure on PTSD symptoms was examined. Forty-one URMs were assessed with the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview for children and adolescents, the Youth Self-Report, the UCLA PTSD Reaction Index and Facts About You.
