Mass balance for mercury in the San Francisco Bay area.

We have developed and illustrated a general regional multi-species model that describes the fate and transport of mercury in three forms, elemental, divalent, and methylated, in a generic regional environment including air, soil, vegetation, water, and sediment. The objectives of the model are to describe the fate of the three forms of mercury in the environment and to determine the dominant physical sinks that remove mercury from the system. Chemical transformations between the three groups of mercury species are modeled by assuming constant ratios of species concentrations in individual envi

Spatial variations of mercury in sediment of Minamata Bay, Japan.

Mercury-contaminated effluent was discharged into Minamata Bay from a chemical plant over a period of approximately 40 years until 1968. In October 1977, the Minamata Bay Pollution Prevention Project was initiated to dispose of sedimentary sludge containing mercury concentrations higher than 25 mg kg(-1). In March 1990, the project was completed. In an effort to estimate current contamination in the bay, the vertical and horizontal distributions of mercury in sediment were investigated. Sediment core samples were collected on June 26, 2002 at 16 locations in Minamata Bay and Fukuro Bay located

The distribution and inventory of total and methyl mercury in Kuwait Bay.

Sediment (surface and core) sampling was conducted during the period from August 96-December 98 from intertidal and offshore areas in Kuwait Bay. The highest (and most variable) concentrations of total mercury (T-Hg; 36500+/-34930 ng g(-1)) are encountered around the previous industrial outfall where sediments are disturbed by shipping activities. The concentrations of T-Hg are lower in the Shuwaikh Port area (650+/-210 ng g(-1)) and continue to decrease towards the northern coastline of Kuwait Bay (average concentrations in the wider Bay region are 50+/-30 ng g(-1)). These values are still ab

Occupational skin diseases in the San Francisco Bay Area.

From answers by one-third of the practicing dermatologists in the San Francisco Bay Area to a questionnaire on occupational skin diseases, contact dermatitis due to irritants and sensitizers was found to rank first. Poison oak, which is the leading reported cause on "Doctor's First Report of Work Injury" received by the California Department of Industrial Relations, was sixth on the list of the survey, trailing solvents, cleansing agents, petroleum products and epoxy resins. A history of atopic dermatitis was often noted in current cases of occupational diseases of the skin. Avoidance of expos

Rethinking vasopressor use in the trauma bay: a shifting perspective.

The use of vasopressors during the acute resuscitation of severely injured patients with trauma has long been controversial. Building on the concept of permissive hypotension, damage control resuscitation focuses on hemostatic transfusion of blood products to maintain perfusion pressures. However, targeting lower perfusion pressures while awaiting definitive hemorrhage control is contraindicated in some patient subpopulations and may be detrimental. Coupled with the shift towards a circulation-first approach to resuscitation, there is increasing interest in the use of vasopressors in the traum

Geospatial approaches to characterizing agriculture in the Chincoteague Bay subbasin.

Most agricultural information is reported by government sources on a state or county basis. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate use of geospatial data, the 2002 Agricultural Cropland Data Layer (CDL) for the mid-Atlantic region, to characterize agricultural, environmental, and other scientific parameters for the Chincoteague Bay subbasin using geographic information systems. This study demonstrated that agriculture can be characterized accurately on subbasin and subwatershed bases, thus complimenting various assessment technologies. Approximately 28% of the dry land of the subbasin wa

The in-vitro activity of Bay y 3118, a new chlorofluoroquinolone.

The in-vitro activity of Bay y 3118, a new quinolone antimicrobial was compared with that of ciprofloxacin, sparfloxacin and three beta-lactams against 620 clinical isolates. Bay y 3118 was the most active quinolone against the majority of Enterobacteriaceae and Staphylococcus spp. The MIC90 for the members of the Enterobacteriaceae were < or = 0.12 mg/L except for Serratia spp. (1 mg/L) and in general Bay y 3118 was two-fold more active than ciprofloxacin or sparfloxacin. Strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa were more susceptible to ciprofloxacin (MIC90 0.25 mg/L) than to Bay y 3118 (MIC90 0.5 m

The toxicopathology of Prudhoe Bay crude oil in chicken embryos.

Microliter amounts of Prudhoe Bay crude oil were applied to the shell of fertile leghorn chicken eggs on Day 9 of incubation. Gross and microscopic pathological changes were examined in embryos surviving 4 days after exposure. Gross lesions seen consistently were extensive edema, superficial zones of pale hepatic tissue, distension of the heart, and enlargement of the spleen. Histologically, the pale liver tissue corresponded to areas of hepatocyte necrosis. Additional histological lesions were cellular casts and mineralization in the renal tubules, distension of the glomerular capillaries, an

Composition and sources of organic matter and its solvent extractable components in surface sediments of a bay under serious anthropogenic influences: Daya Bay, China.

Organic matter of nine surface sediments from the Daya Bay was Soxhlet-extracted with a mixture of 2:1 (v/v) dichloromethane-methanol and separated into five fractions: non-aromatic hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons, ketones, alcohols, and fatty acids and asphaltenes, and analyzed to determine their bulk and biomarker composition. Marine autogenic input appears to be a major source of organic matter. Generally, non-aromatic hydrocarbons are the most dominant fraction of solvent-extractable organic matter (EOM) followed by the other four fractions in decreasing amounts: fatty acids and asphal

An alternative approach to bioaccumulation assessment of methyl-Hg, total-Hg, Cd, Pb, Zn in bivalve Anomalocardia brasiliana from Rio de Janeiro bays.

We present an alternative approach for establishing in situ bioaccumulation assessment of methyl-Hg (MeHg), total-Hg, Cd, Pb and Zn in bivalve Anomalocardia brasiliana from four bays of Rio de Janeiro presenting varying degrees of eutrophication, acid volatile sulfides (2-55 μmol g-1), simultaneously extracted metals (SEM) and total metals (TM) in sediments. Using metal concentrations of composite samples from three size classes of bivalve and their incorporation rates (IR = metal concentration / total length), which depend on exposure time, we calculated asymptotic IR and respective consequen…

Mercury and methylmercury in birds and marine mammals inhabiting the coastal zone of the two King George Island's bays: Admiralty and King George Bay (maritime Antarctic).

The Antarctic is particularly sensitive to mercury (Hg) pollution and even low levels of Hg may cause significant damage in this fragile environment. The aim of this study was to investigate routes of mercury and methylmercury (MeHg) elimination by animals inhabiting the maritime Antarctic. The results showed that organisms at the highest trophic level (elephant seal) have the highest concentrations of THg and MeHg in both excrement and fur samples. Interspecies differences in mercury levels were observed in materials sourced from penguins of the genus Pysgocelis.13C and 15N values confirmed d

Effects of Artificial Islands Construction on the Spatial Distribution and Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals in the Surface Sediments from a Semi-closed Bay (Longkou Bay), China.

Artificial islands construction can significantly influence the spatial distribution of heavy metals in inshore sediments. In this study, the distribution and contamination of heavy metals (Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, As and Hg) in inshore sediments of the Longkou Bay and artificial island adjacent areas were investigated in 2013 and 2014, respectively. Results showed that the contents of heavy metals increased in the Longkou Bay and decreased in the west of the artificial island in 2014 compared with 2013. The contamination and potential eco-risk of heavy metals in the sediments were higher i

Spatiotemporal variations and burial fluxes of methylmercury in the sediments of Jiaozhou Bay.

Methylmercury (MeHg) in coastal sediments poses significant ecological and human-health risks due to its high toxicity, strong bioaccumulation potential, and mobility within benthic environments. This study investigates the spatiotemporal distribution, preservation mechanisms, and historical burial fluxes of MeHg in surface sediments and sediment cores collected from Jiaozhou Bay (JZB), a semi-enclosed and urbanized bay in northern China. Surface sediments exhibited low-to-moderate MeHg concentrations (0.03-0.37 ng/g) with a pronounced east-west concentration gradient. Higher MeHg levels were

Spatial distribution and historical trends of mercury in Matagorda Bay sediment.

Matagorda Bay, a shallow, microtidal estuarine system, located along the northwestern Gulf of Mexico/Texas coast, faces considerable challenges due to natural events and anthropogenic activities, leading to the resuspension and dispersal of sediment and pollutants within the water column. Here, we reconstructed historical trends and the spatial distribution of total mercury (T-Hg) concentrations in surface and subsurface sediment across the bay using 49 vibra-cores collected between 2021 and 2023. Bulk and clay-normalized T-Hg concentrations revealed a localized contamination hotspot near the
