There remains considerable doubt, debate, and confusion regarding how biodiversity responds to gradients of important environmental drivers, such as habitat size, resource productivity, and disturbance. Here we develop a simple but comprehensive theoretical framework based on competition-colonization multispecies communities to examine the separate and interactive effects of these drivers. Using both numerical simulations and analytical arguments, we demonstrate that the critical trade-off between competitive and colonization ability can lead to complex nonlinear, zig-zag responses in both spe…

Several Bacillus strains have been well studied for their ability to control soil-borne plant diseases. This property is linked to the production of several families of lipopeptides. Depending of their structure, these compounds show antifungal and/or plant systemic resistance inducing activities. In this work, the biodiversity of lipopeptides produced by different antifungal Bacillus strains isolated from seeds, rhizospheric, and non-rhizospheric soils in Algeria was analyzed. Sixteen active strains were characterized by PCR for their content in genes involved in lipopeptide biosynthesis and …

Bacteria face tough competition in polymicrobial communities. To persist in a specific niche, many species produce toxic extracellular effectors to interfere with the growth of nearby microbes. These effectors include the recently reported non-canonical D-amino acids (NCDAAs). In Vibrio cholerae, the causative agent of cholera, NCDAAs control cell wall integrity in stationary phase. Here, an analysis of the composition of the extracellular medium of V. cholerae revealed the unprecedented presence of D-Arg. Compared with other D-amino acids, D-Arg displayed higher potency and broader toxicity i

The negative effect of increasing atmospheric nitrogen (N) pollution on grassland biodiversity is now incontrovertible. However, the recent introduction of cleaner technologies in the UK has led to reductions in the emissions of nitrogen oxides, with concomitant decreases in N deposition. The degree to which grassland biodiversity can be expected to 'bounce back' in response to these improvements in air quality is uncertain, with a suggestion that long-term chronic N addition may lead to an alternative low biodiversity state. Here we present evidence from the 160-year-old Park Grass Experiment…

Brucellosis is one of the major bacterial zoonoses worldwide. In the past decade, an increasing number of atypical Brucella strains and species have been described. Brucella microti in particular has attracted attention, because this species not only infects mammalian hosts but also persists in soil. An environmental reservoir may pose a new public health risk, leading to the reemergence of brucellosis. In a polyphasic approach, comprising conventional microbiological techniques and extensive biochemical and molecular techniques, all currently available Brucella microti strains were characteri

Socioeconomic status-biodiversity associations are widely reported in cities. However, most studies remain correlational and cannot distinguish whether socioeconomic status drives biodiversity change, biodiversity shapes socioeconomic outcomes, or whether observed patterns reflect biodiversity gains versus losses. We propose a unifying framework organizing established mechanisms from diverse urban research into four hypothesized causal pathways: (A) investment-driven biodiversity enhancement, (B) disinvestment-driven biodiversity degradation, (C) biodiversity-driven socioeconomic improvement, …

The genus Bordetella includes bacteria that are found in the environment and/or associated with humans and other animals. A few closely related species, including Bordetella pertussis, are human pathogens that cause diseases such as whooping cough. Here, we present a large database of Bordetella isolates and genomes and develop genotyping systems for the genus and for the B. pertussis clade. To generate the database, we merge previously existing databases from Oxford University and Institut Pasteur, import genomes from public repositories, and add 83 newly sequenced B. bronchiseptica genomes.

Documenting the natural diversity of eukaryotic organisms in the nonhuman primate (NHP) gut is important for understanding the evolution of the mammalian gut microbiome, its role in digestion, health and disease, and the consequences of anthropogenic change on primate biology and conservation. Despite the ecological significance of gut-associated eukaryotes, little is known about the factors that influence their assembly and diversity in mammals. In this study, we used an 18S rRNA gene fragment metabarcoding approach to assess the eukaryotic assemblage of 62 individuals representing 16 NHP spe

Biodiversity laws in several European countries rely on official species-level price lists for fauna to enable compensation for biodiversity damage. However, the methods underlying these values are often opaque and poorly justified, raising concerns about consistency, fairness and ecological relevance. To gain insights into the revealed public regulatory patterns embedded in these mechanisms, we investigate how monetary compensation values are assigned to fauna in European biodiversity legislation and what factors influence these values. Here we show that species-level values are implicitly gu…

Robust estimates of biodiversity change are essential to inform management and conservation, and to address global biodiversity loss. However, common temporal data limitations may compromise trend accuracy. Here, we test how temporal resolution influences biodiversity trends using 1,353 river invertebrate time series collected annually for ≥ 10 years across 18 European countries. We simulate reduced sampling frequencies and durations and compare these trends to the complete time series. Reducing frequency from annual to every 2-6 years resulted in 87-73% of sites matching in trend directions, …

Cereals are the key staple foods supporting a growing population under global change. Soil biodiversity sustains ecosystem multifunctionality (EMF) that underpins food production and soil agroecosystem services. Yet, the capacity of soil biodiversity to support EMF in cereal fields under multiple global change factors (GCFs) remains virtually unknown. Here, we conducted a field mesocosm experiment involving wheat, four levels of soil biodiversity, and up to eight distinct GCFs (warming, drought, salinity, heavy metals, nitrogen addition, microplastics, pesticides, and alkalinization) to invest…

The alpine biome, located at higher elevations of mountains worldwide, supports unique biodiversity and provides important ecosystem contributions to people. Despite the growing recognition of mountain biodiversity in international policy frameworks, substantial gaps remain in our understanding of how alpine biodiversity varies across mountain systems, undermining estimates of its conservation value and consequently effective conservation strategies. Here, we curate a dataset on alpine biodiversity, incorporating expert-validated data on species' elevational ranges for vascular plants, mammals…

Leaf litter ecosystems and their fauna are largely understudied, despite their critical ecological roles. Here, we investigate challenges associated with estimating biodiversity in terrestrial leaf litter. Current methodologies for biodiversity assessment are fraught with limitations; amongst the most significant is a decline in taxonomic expertise, complicating the process of species identification and the significant costs associated with species-level morphological identifications. DNA barcoding employs molecular markers to identify animal species, and the mitochondrial gene cytochrome c ox…

Historical nonequilibrium processes are often considered the main drivers of global biodiversity patterns. We argue that while biodiversity is often out of equilibrium, the concept of equilibrium is still crucial for interpreting macroecological diversity patterns, and current confusion in the literature stems from misunderstandings concerning equilibrium dynamics. We demonstrate how an equilibrium-based framework, such as the 'Equilibrium Theory of Biodiversity Dynamics' (ETBD), illuminates diversity patterns in space and time, including the latitudinal diversity gradient, even in the out-of-…
