Recent studies have demonstrated that biogenic amines have a function of facilitating formation and maintenance of synapses in diverse regions of the central nervous system in developing and adult animals. The normal number of synapses maintained by biogenic amines are crucial to acquire learning and memory. The level of biogenic amines was reported to decrease in the brain by several neurodevelopmental disorders associated with mental retardation and developmental disabilities such as Rett syndrome, autism and Down syndrome. Taken into consideration this fact together with the function of bio…

The effects of serotonin antagonist peritol, cholinolytic atropine, H2-receptor blocker cimetidine and dopaminergic receptor blocker metoclopramide on stress- and exogenous serotonin-induced gastric ulcerogenesis in rats were studied. Peritol was shown to inhibit significantly serotonin- an stress-induced hemorrhagic effect. Similar but less pronounced inhibit produced by metoclopramide and cimetidine. Atropine decreased gastric hemorrhages induced by serotonin but failed to affect stress-induced hemorrhagic lesions. All antagonists tested decreased stress-induced erosions. Erosive lesions sti

In this paper, a highly efficient and straightforward method for synthesizing novel Schiff bases was developed by reacting selected biogenic amines with sodium 2-formylbenzene sulfonate and sodium 3-formylbenzene sulfonate. 1H and 13C NMR, IR spectroscopy, and high-resolution mass spectrometry were used to characterize the new compounds. The main advantages of the proposed procedure include simple reagents and reactions carried out in water or methanol and at room temperature, which reduces time and energy. Moreover, it was shown that the obtained water-soluble Schiff bases are stable in aqueo…

Protein-rich foods release biogenic amines (BAs) during prolonged storage, and these compounds serve as key biomarkers of food spoilage. Current separation-based methods for detecting BAs in food require sophisticated instrumentation and laborious sample pretreatment procedures. The array-sensing strategy, which mimics biological olfaction, provides a simple and rapid approach for the simultaneous detection of multiple BAs without the need for separation. Here, we constructed a multidimensional fluorescent sensor array using porphyrin-functionalized carbon dots (P-CDs) and their composites wit…

Biogenic amines (BAs) are low-molecular-weight organic bases that occur naturally in various foods, particularly those undergoing fermentation or spoilage. Although they play essential physiological roles in the human body, excessive intake through food can have adverse health effects. Due to their accumulation in food products, including fish, cheese, and fermented foods, BAs are considered chemical hazards in food safety and can cause toxicological effects. Consumption of foods, especially aquatic products, with elevated BA levels can lead to symptoms ranging from headaches and hypertension …

BACKGROUND: Brain monoamine depletion is a well-established biochemical consequence of phenylketonuria (PKU). Similar alterations are expected in the peripheral biogenic amines (PBA), which share the same metabolic pathway with the brain. The present cross-sectional study explored the potential prognostic value of PBA by examining their relationship with blood Phe and clinical outcomes in early-treated adult PKU patients (ETPKU).
METHOD: 53 ETPKU (age 27.14 ± 8.22 years; 35 female) and 60 age-matched control subjects (age 43 ± 13 years; 43 female) were enrolled in the study. A UPLC-ESI-MS/MS-…

Reactive metabolites (RMs) are products generated from the metabolism of endogenous and exogenous substances. RMs are characterized as electrophilic species chemically reactive to nucleophiles. Those nucleophilic species may be nitrogen-containing bio-molecules, including macro-biomolecules, such as protein and DNA, and small biomolecules, i.e., amino acids (AAs) and biogenic amines (BAs). AAs and BAs are essential endogenous nitrogen-containing compounds required for normal development, metabolism, and physiological functions in organisms, through participating in the intracellular replicatio…

BACKGROUND: Rett syndrome (RTT, MIM #312750) is a severe neurological disorder caused by mutations in the X-linked methyl-CpG binding protein 2 (MECP2) gene. Female patients are affected with an incidence of 1/15000 live births and develop normally from birth to 6-18 months of age before the onset of deficits in autonomic, cognitive, motor functions (stereotypic hand movements, impaired locomotion) and autistic features. Studies on Mecp2 mouse models, and specifically null mice, revealed morphological and functional alterations of neurons. Several functions that are regulated by bioaminergic n

Wine intolerance primarily concerns the body's ability to process histamine, sulphites, tannins, and alcohol. Histamine, a biogenic amine, is involved in immune responses and helps regulate stomach acid. The legal limits for histamine in wine range from 2 to 10 mg/mL. Accurate estimation of histamine requires a sensitive and reliable sample preparation technique. In our study, we applied stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) with in situ derivatization using isobutyl chloroformate, followed by gas chromatographic analysis. Under optimal experimental conditions, established through multivariate d
