Biomarkers of Exposure to Phthalate Mixtures and Adverse Birth Outcomes in a Puerto Rico Birth Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Humans are exposed to complex mixtures of phthalate chemicals from a range of consumer products. Previous studies have reported significant associations between individual phthalate metabolites and pregnancy outcomes, but mixtures research is limited. OBJECTIVES: We used the Puerto Rico Testsite for Exploring Contamination Threats longitudinal pregnancy cohort to investigate associations between phthalate metabolite mixtures and pregnancy outcomes. METHODS: Women (n=462 carrying females, n=540 carrying males) provided up to three urine samples throughout gestation (median 18, 22,

Exposure to natural environments during pregnancy and birth outcomes in 11 European birth cohorts.

Research suggests that maternal exposure to natural environments (i.e., green and blue spaces) promotes healthy fetal growth. However, the available evidence is heterogeneous across regions, with very few studies on the effects of blue spaces. This study evaluated associations between maternal exposure to natural environments and birth outcomes in 11 birth cohorts across nine European countries. This study, part of the LifeCycle project, was based on a total sample size of 69,683 newborns with harmonised data. For each participant, we calculated seven indicators of residential exposure to natu…

Birth prevalence and characteristics of congenital cytomegalovirus infection in an urban birth cohort, Jakarta, Indonesia.

OBJECTIVES: Little is known about the birth prevalence and characteristics of congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection in developing countries. To determine the prevalence and characteristics of congenital CMV infection in Indonesia, we conducted a prospective study in an urban birth cohort of neonates at a national referral hospital in 2016-2017, Jakarta, Indonesia. METHODS: Consecutively born neonates were screened for the presence of CMV by using pan-herpesvirus nested-PCR and Sanger sequencing in saliva and/or urine specimens. Both the neonatal clinical findings as well as maternal char…

GWAS on prolonged gestation (post-term birth): analysis of successive Finnish birth cohorts.

BACKGROUND: Gestation is a crucial timepoint in human development. Deviation from a term gestational age correlates with both acute and long-term adverse health effects for the child. Both being born preterm and post-term, that is, having short and long gestational ages, are heritable and influenced by the prenatal and perinatal environment. Despite the obvious heritable component, specific genetic influences underlying differences in gestational age are poorly understood. METHODS: We investigated the genetic architecture of gestational age in 9141 individuals, including 1167 born post-term,

Post-term birth: risk factors and outcomes in a 10-year cohort of Norwegian births.

OBJECTIVE: To identify factors associated with post-term birth and factors associated with adverse outcomes in post-term births. METHODS: The sample was a 10-year cohort (1978-1987) of term (n = 379,445) and post-term (n = 65,796) births from the Medical Birth Registry of Norway. Gestational age was based on mothers' recall of the last menstrual period. Multivariate analyses included proportional hazards regression and binomial logistic regression. RESULTS: After controlling for covariates, there was only a slightly increased risk of perinatal mortality in post-term as compared with term bir

Maternal iodine status, intrauterine growth, birth outcomes and congenital anomalies in a UK birth cohort.

BACKGROUND: Severe iodine insufficiency in pregnancy has significant consequences, but there is inadequate evidence to indicate what constitutes mild or moderate insufficiency, in terms of observed detrimental effects on pregnancy or birth outcomes. A limited number of studies have examined iodine status and birth outcomes, finding inconsistent evidence for specific outcomes. METHODS: Maternal iodine status was estimated from spot urine samples collected at 26-28 weeks' gestation from 6971 mothers in the Born in Bradford birth cohort. Associations with outcomes were examined for both urinary …

Maternal and cord blood manganese (Mn) levels and birth weight: The MIREC birth cohort study.

Epidemiological studies have hypothesized that both insufficient and excess blood manganese (Mn) levels during pregnancy are associated with reduced fetal growth. This literature is characterized by inconsistent results and a limited focus on women with exposures representative of the general North American population. We examined the relationship between maternal and cord blood Mn levels and fetal growth among women enrolled in the Maternal-Infant Research on Environmental Chemicals Study (MIREC). Mothers with singleton, term infants and complete maternal first and third trimester blood Mn da

Patterns of Birth Cohort‒Specific Smoking Histories in Brazil.

INTRODUCTION: Smoking prevalence has decreased considerably in Brazil from 34.8% in 1989 to 12.6% in 2019 owing to the implementation of strong tobacco control policies. However, recent data show that the downward trend may be stagnating. Detailed analyses of historical smoking patterns by birth cohort could guide tobacco control decision making in Brazil. METHODS: Using the 2008 Global Adult Tobacco Survey and the 2013 and 2019 National Health Surveys, historical smoking patterns in Brazil were estimated, supplemented with data from the 2006‒2019 Surveillance System of Risk Factors for Chron…

Molecular Study on Twin Cohort with Discordant Birth Weight.

The increased rate of twinning has pointed out newer challenges in clinical practices related to gestational complications, intrauterine growth restriction, perinatal mortality, and comorbidities. As a twin pregnancy progresses, the increased demand for oxygen supply can easily disrupt the redox homeostasis balance and further impose a greater challenge for the developing fetuses. A substantial birth-weight difference acts as an indicator of a deficit in oxygenation or blood flow to one of the fetuses, which might be related to a low bioavailable nitric oxide level. Therefore, in this study, w

Neonatal morbidity in the 2011 JAKIDS Jamaican birth cohort.

This study reports the spectrum of discharge diagnoses in a national cohort of newborns admitted during a 3-month period to hospitals across Jamaica. The data were analyzed using measures of central tendency and risk assessed using odds ratio. Data on 1607 admissions were used to describe the spectrum of morbidity in hospitalized infants. Eight hundred and seven (50%) male and 754 (48%) female neonates were admitted. There was a 15% (240) readmission rate during the neonatal period. Infants of diabetic mothers were almost three times as likely to be admitted as infants whose mothers were not d

Birth cohort screening for chronic hepatitis during colonoscopy appointments.

OBJECTIVES: More than 70% of infections with hepatitis C viruses (HCV) occur among people born between 1945 and 1965 (baby boomers). The US Centers for Disease Control estimate that 70% of people with chronic hepatitis are not aware that they are infected with a virus. We performed a prospective trial to determine whether people born during this time period would accept testing for chronic viral infection (hepatitis B virus (HBV) and HCV) during routine colonoscopies. We also evaluated acceptance and efficacy of screening for immunity to hepatitis A (HAV) and B viruses. METHODS: During a 3-mo
