Unveiling the birth of explosive entrainment: A novel phenomenon triggered by higher-order interactions.

Entrainment is an important collective behavior in complex networks, where the output period of the coupled neuronal oscillator matches the external input period and maintains a stable phase relationship. The typical feature of entrainment is the regions in the input period and input amplitude parameter space, known as the Arnold tongue. In this article, we introduced a higher-order Kuramoto model and found that the transition process of the coupled neuronal oscillators from the unentrainment state to the entrainment state is a discontinuous first-order phase transition process accompanied by

IMPACT OF PRENATAL MATERNAL FACTORS AND BIRTH ORDER ON THE ANTHROPOMETRIC STATUS OF NEWBORNS IN IRAN.

This cross-sectional study was carried out to capture possible maternal factors affecting newborns' anthropometric measurements. Data were collected from eight public health centres and referral university hospital records in Tabriz and Heriss districts, north-west Iran, for 807 mother-neonate pairs delivering live singleton births and their offspring during the two years up to August 2014. The incidence of low birth weight (LBW) was 5.1%. A close correlation was found between maternal anthropometry and birth order with neonatal anthropometric data. Birth order and maternal height and body mas…

The effect of birth order in twins on fetal umbilical blood gas and apgar score.

Although recent reports have revealed no difference in perinatal mortality between a set of twins, more sensitive means other than perinatal mortality are necessary to evaluate differences in twins. This study examined differences between 34 twin pairs with respect to Apgar score, umbilical venous and arterial blood gas, and acid-base data. The parameters were measured in paired samples and compared with the paired t test and Fisher's exact probability test. The most coherent findings were a higher umbilical venous PO2 and umbilical arterial PO2 in twin A. Their differences were not due to the

Hemoglobin Differences in Uncomplicated Monochorionic Twins in Relation to Birth Order and Mode of Delivery.

AIM: To determine the differences in hemoglobin (Hb) levels in the first 2 days after birth in uncomplicated monochorionic twins in relation to birth order and mode of delivery. METHODS: All consecutive uncomplicated monochorionic pregnancies with two live-born twins delivered at our center were included in this retrospective study. We recorded Hb levels at birth and on day 2, and analyzed Hb levels in association with birth order, mode of delivery, and time interval between delivery of twin 1 and 2. RESULTS: A total of 290 monochorionic twin pairs were analyzed, including 171 (59%) twins de…

Birth order, family size, and the risk of cancer in young and middle-aged adults.

We used the Swedish Family-Cancer Database to analyse the effects of birth order and family size on the risk of common cancers among offspring born over the period 1958-96. Some 1.38 million offspring up to age 55 years with 50.6 million person-years were included. Poisson regression analysis included age at diagnosis, birth cohort, socio-economic status and region of residence as other explanatory variables. The only significant associations were an increasing risk for breast cancer by birth order and a decreasing risk for melanoma by birth order and, particularly, by family size. When detail…

Changes in the eruption order of the first permanent tooth and their relation to season of birth in Japan.

In order to examine the eruption order of the first two permanent teeth, kindergarten children 5 to 6 years old were examined in Hakone, Japan. Among a total of 817 children examined from 1976 to 1984, 349 were determined as I-type children, whose mandibular first incisor erupted earlier than the mandibular first molar, and 183 were as M-type children, whose first molar erupted earlier in the mandible. The mandibular I-type rate, i.e., the proportion of the I-type among a total of I- and M-type children, was 66% (349/532). In 1983-1984, the I-type rate was 70% among boys and 62% among girls, b

Fraternal Birth Order Effect and Other Sibship Effects in Bisexual and Asexual Men and Women.

Previous research has shown that homosexual men and women tend to have more older brothers than their heterosexual counterparts-this is known as the fraternal birth order effect (FBOE) and is usually considered a marker for biological development of sexual orientation. Recent studies suggest this effect might also apply to bisexual and asexual individuals who have been overlooked by previous scholarship. In this study, I explored associations of the FBOE and other sibship effects with minority sexual orientation in an online collected sample of heterosexual (n = 1174), bisexual (n = 432), and …

Fraternal Birth Order, Family Size, and Male Homosexuality: Meta-Analysis of Studies Spanning 25 Years.

The fraternal birth order effect is the tendency for older brothers to increase the odds of homosexuality in later-born males. This study compared the strength of the effect in subjects from small versus large families and in homosexual subjects with masculine versus feminine gender identities. Meta-analyses were conducted on 30 homosexual and 30 heterosexual groups from 26 studies, totaling 7140 homosexual and 12,837 heterosexual males. The magnitude of the fraternal birth order effect was measured with a novel variable, the Older Brothers Odds Ratio, computed as (homosexuals' older brothers …

Birth order and narcolepsy risk among genetically susceptible individuals: a population-based case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Birth order may play a role in autoimmune diseases and early childhood infections, both factors implicated in the etiology of narcolepsy. We investigated the association between birth order and narcolepsy risk in a population-based case-control study in which all study subjects were HLA-DQB1*0602 positive. METHODS: Subjects were 18-50 years old, residents of King County, Washington, and positive for HLA-DQB1*0602. Birth order was obtained from administered interviews. We used logistic regression to generate odds ratios adjusted for income and African American race. RESULTS: Analy…

Birth order and sibling sex ratio in two samples of Dutch gender-dysphoric homosexual males.

Two studies were undertaken to confirm the previous findings that homosexual men in general tend to have a later than expected birth order and that extremely feminine homosexual men also tend to have a higher than expected proportion of brothers (i.e., a higher sibling sex ratio). Subjects in Study 1 were Dutch, adult and adolescent, biological male patients with gender dysphoria (persistent and recurrent desires to belong to the opposite sex), who were undergoing treatment with feminizing hormones. These comprised 83 patients who reported sexual attraction to other males (the homosexual group…

Birth order and childhood type 1 diabetes risk: a pooled analysis of 31 observational studies.

BACKGROUND: The incidence rates of childhood onset type 1 diabetes are almost universally increasing across the globe but the aetiology of the disease remains largely unknown. We investigated whether birth order is associated with the risk of childhood diabetes by performing a pooled analysis of previous studies. METHODS: Relevant studies published before January 2010 were identified from MEDLINE, Web of Science and EMBASE. Authors of studies provided individual patient data or conducted pre-specified analyses. Meta-analysis techniques were used to derive combined odds ratios (ORs), before an…

Concentrations of sex hormones in umbilical-cord blood: their relation to sex and birth order of infants.

In 3 groups of human newborns, 5 sex hormones were assayed from samples of umbilical-cord blood, and concentrations were analyzed by the sex and birth order of the infants. The 5 hormones assayed were testosterone, androstenedione, estrone, estradiol, and progesterone. Concentrations of testosterone were significantly greater in males than females. The other 4 hormones did not differ significantly by sex. In both sexes, firstborns had significantly more progesterone and estrogens, with progesterone showing the largest birth-order effects. Among male infants, firstborns had higher concentration…

Current practices in the prediction and prevention of preterm birth in patients with higher-order multiple gestations.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine the interventions utilized by maternal-fetal medicine specialists in the prediction and prevention of preterm labor in higher-order multiple (HOM) gestations. STUDY DESIGN: Online questionnaires and email surveys were sent to all the maternal-fetal medicine specialists in Canada (n=122). Questionnaire items included interventions physicians routinely recommended for HOM gestations including: (1) bed rest; (2) cervical length measurement on transvaginal ultrasound; (3) corticosteroids use; (4) cerclage; and (5) tocolytic therapy. RESULTS: Response rate was 66

Temporal trends in the frequency of twins and higher-order multiple births in Canada and the United States.

BACKGROUND: The dramatic increase in multiple births is an important public health issue, since such births have elevated risks for adverse perinatal outcomes. Our objective was to explore the most recent temporal trends in rates of multiple births in Canada and the United States. METHODS: Live birth data from Canada (excluding Ontario) and the United States from 1991-2009 were used to calculate rates of twins, and triplet and higher-order multiples (triplet+). Temporal trends were assessed using tests for linear trend and absolute and relative changes in rates. RESULTS: Twin live births in

Early childhood development under son preference in Vietnam: The role of child gender and birth order.

Vietnam has experienced more than two decades of elevated prenatal sex selection due to persistent son preference, yet little is known about whether gender disparities emerge among surviving children in early childhood. This study examines gender differences in early childhood development (ECD) among Vietnamese children aged 24-59 months and investigates whether birth order and family context - key markers of son preference - moderate these differences. Using nationally representative data from the 2020-2021 Vietnam Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey, ECD was assessed across health, learning, a…
