The negative impacts of bisphenols on thyroid function in adults with bisphenol A exposure level exceeding the tolerable daily intake.

In 2023, European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published a re-evaluation of the safety of bisphenol A (BPA), establishing the new tolerable daily intake (TDI) as 0.2 ng/kg·bw/day with a 20,000-fold reduction compared to 2015, which regained public concern about the impact of bisphenols (BPs) on human health. In order to explore the health risk to thyroid function of BPs, in this study, we assessed the internal exposure levels of BPs and the relationships between urinary BPs and thyroid function in general adults. We carried out a cross-sectional study in Chengdu, China, recruiting 1486 adults …

Sensitive and rapid detection of bisphenol A using signal amplification nanoparticles loaded with anti-bisphenol A monoclonal antibody.

Bisphenol A has been reported to be a ubiquitous contaminant, and exposure to this compound can lead to adverse effects in human health. In the study, monoclonal antibody against BPA (anti-BPA mAb) with high affinity (3.74 × 109 L/mol) secreted by cell line 2E3 was successfully screened. Inspired by the signal amplification of nanoparticles, anti-BPA mAbs were labeled with nano-materials including colloidal gold (AuNP) and gold nanoflowers (AuNF) for preparation of immunoprobes and AuNP-/AuNF-based test strips. The developed AuNP- and AuNF-based test strips achieved the rapid and sensitive det

The impact of Bisphenol-A on human reproductive health.

Bisphenol-A (BPA) is a recognized endocrine-disrupting chemical used to produce several consumer goods and products. There has been widespread exposure to BPA because of increased industrial production and use of BPA-containing products. As a result of these exposures, BPA is found in several human body fluids and can cause endocrine disruption by interfering with hormone signaling pathways and epigenetic modifications. Therefore, human reproductive health and development have been adversely affected by BPA. This review aimed to consolidate existing knowledge on the impact of BPA on human repr

Bisphenol A (BPA) and Cardiovascular or Cardiometabolic Diseases.

Bisphenol A (BPA; 4,4'-isopropylidenediphenol) is a well-known endocrine disruptor. Most human exposure to BPA occurs through the consumption of BPA-contaminated foods. Cardiovascular or cardiometabolic diseases such as diabetes, obesity, hypertension, acute kidney disease, chronic kidney disease, and heart failure are the leading causes of death worldwide. Positive associations have been reported between blood or urinary BPA levels and cardiovascular or cardiometabolic diseases. BPA also induces disorders or dysfunctions in the tissues associated with these diseases through various cell signa

Are structural analogues to bisphenol a safe alternatives?

BACKGROUND: Bisphenol A (BPA) is a chemical with widespread human exposure suspected of causing low-dose effects. Thus, a need for developing alternatives to BPA exists. Structural analogues of BPA have already been detected in foods and humans. Due to the structural analogy of the alternatives, there is a risk of effects similar to BPA. OBJECTIVES: The aim was to elucidate and compare the hazards of bisphenol B (BPB), bisphenol E (BPE), bisphenol F (BPF), bisphenol S (BPS) and 4-cumylphenol (HPP) to BPA. METHODS: In vitro studies on steroidogenesis, receptor activity, and biomarkers of effe

Bisphenol A and human health: a review of the literature.

There is growing evidence that bisphenol A (BPA) may adversely affect humans. BPA is an endocrine disruptor that has been shown to be harmful in laboratory animal studies. Until recently, there were relatively few epidemiological studies examining the relationship between BPA and health effects in humans. However, in the last year, the number of these studies has more than doubled. A comprehensive literature search found 91 studies linking BPA to human health; 53 published within the last year. This review outlines this body of literature, showing associations between BPA exposure and adverse

Epigenetic perspective on the developmental effects of bisphenol A.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an estrogenic environmental toxin widely used in the production of plastics and ubiquitous human exposure to this chemical has been proposed to be a potential risk to public health. Animal studies suggest that in utero and early postnatal exposure to this compound may produce a broad range of adverse effects, including impaired brain development, sexual differentiation, behavior, and immune function, which could extend to future generations. Molecular mechanisms that underlie the long-lasting effects of BPA continue to be elucidated, and likely involve disruption of epigen

Bisphenol A and human fertility: a systematic review.

Considering the significant exposure to the synthetic compound bisphenol A (BPA), present in a wide range of materials in our daily lives, this article discusses a possible correlation between this substance and human fertility through a bibliographic review. In the context of growing evidence that BPA impacts the fertility of women and men of reproductive age, the reviewed articles suggest that exposure to this agent may affect ovarian reserve parameters in women. In pregnant women, it may cause fetal malformations. BPA has also been linked to an increase in spontaneous abortions and prematur

Bisphenol A: an emerging threat to female fertility.

Bisphenol-A (BPA) has been reported to be associated to female infertility. Indeed, BPA has been found to be more frequently detected in infertile women thus leading to hypothesize a possible effect of BPA on natural conception and spontaneous fecundity. In addition, in procedures of medically assisted reproduction BPA exposure has been found to be negatively associated with peak serum estradiol levels during gonadotropin stimulation, number of retrieved oocytes, number of normally fertilized oocytes and implantation. BPA deleterious effects are more critical during perinatal exposure, causing

Urinary bisphenol A and obesity in U.S. children.

Childhood obesity, a major public health problem, can lead to cardiovascular disease in adulthood. Studies have implicated exposure to bisphenol A (BPA), a commonly used chemical, in the development of obesity in adults. However, literature is limited on this association in children. We examined the association between urinary BPA and obesity in children aged 6-18 years from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2003-2008). The primary exposure was urinary BPA and the outcome was obesity, defined as the ≥ 95th percentile of body mass index specific for age and sex. We found a p
