BACKGROUND: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD) are associated with recurrent episodes of optic neuritis and transverse myelitis, often resulting in high attack-related disability. Therapeutic apheresis has been recommended as a second-line treatment for steroid-refractory NMOSD. Severe hypertriglyceridemia has been consistently associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and other complications, namely acute pancreatitis. We report a case of a 64 year-old woman with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and metabolic syndrome with triglyceride level of 3260 mg/dL. PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) and hyperlipoproteinemia(a) are relatively common disorders, posing a significant health burden due to increased risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Development of electronic health record-based strategies with a linkage to the genetic test results has increased awareness, detection, and control of heritable lipid disorders. This review attempts to critically examine available data to provide a summary of the current evidence for lipoprotein apheresis in FH and elevated lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)).

This is a retrospective study of 131 patients who underwent 479 therapeutic apheresis (TA) procedures at St. Luke's Medical Center, in the Philippines, from 1994 to 2003. Diseases were classified according to indication categories using the American Society for Apheresis (ASFA) guidelines. Seventy-eight percent of the patients belonged to ASFA Category I, 14% to Category II, 8% to Category III, and none in Category IV.
