Evaluation of Bactec high blood volume resin media.

BACTEC PLUS high-blood-volume resin media (aerobic BP 26 vial and anaerobic BP 27 vial) were compared with standard BACTEC media (aerobic NR 6A and anaerobic NR 7A vial). A total of 2253 blood culture sets, each consisting of the four vials, were collected. Positive cultures were obtained from 403 sets and grew 428 organisms; 271 organisms were considered as significant. The BACTEC PLUS high blood volume resin (BP-HBV) media grew significantly more Staphylococcus aureus, coagulase-negative staphylococci, Candida albicans, Enterococcus faecalis, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. After taking into acc…

Rapid volume replacement with warmed blood and fluids.

A prospective clinical study was undertaken in 50 consecutive patients suffering from severe traumatic shock to evaluate the clinical efficacy of a set for rapid administration of solutions (RSAS), which allows for rapid infusion and simultaneous warming of blood and fluids. The mechanism of injury was blunt in 37 patients and penetrating in 13. Admission trauma score averaged 7.5, and the injury severity score averaged 46. Average preresuscitation systolic blood pressure was 71 mmHg, pulse was 105 beats/minute, and temperature was 34.3 degrees C. Initial resuscitation was with the RSAS, and t

Prediction of fetoplacental blood volume in isoimmunized pregnancy.

Direct intravascular fetal transfusion under ultrasound guidance allows precise evaluation of both fetal anemia and adequacy of therapy. In addition, the change in hematocrit after transfusion may be used to estimate the circulatory fetoplacental blood volume. In this study we present the estimates of fetoplacental blood volume calculated at the time of intravascular fetal transfusions. Between March 1986 and March 1988, 60 intravascular fetal transfusions were performed in 20 patients. The 56 procedures in which fetal hematocrits were obtained both before and after transfusion were analyzed. …

Blood volume, erythrokinetics and spleen function in thrombocythaemia.

Essential thrombocythaemia was diagnosed in a series of 18 patients on the basis of platelet counts greater than 1,000 X 10(9)/1. Radionuclide studies have been carried out to distinguish thrombocythaemia as a primary disease from polycythaemia vera, myelofibrosis and chronic granulocytic leukaemia presenting with high platelet counts. These have included blood volume and spleen function, and radio-iron (52Fe) has been used to demonstrate the presence of extramedullary (splenic) erythropoiesis. The value of these investigations in distinguishing between the various myeloproliferative disorders…

[Total blood volume in essential and secondary hypertension].

To study the role of volume factors in the pathogenesis of hypertension, total blood volume (TBV) was determined in 43 patients with essential hypertension, 10 with primary aldosteronism, 5 with Cushing's syndrome, 5 with renovascular hypertension and 23 age-matched normotensives. The radioisotope (131I) labeled plasma tracer technique was employed under conditions of constant sodium intake (200mEq/day). The TBV values obtained were expressed as % normal against the predicted values according to the formulae of Fujita and his co-workers. The results were as follows: (1) TBV was increased in pa…

[Blood volume replacement and hemodilution with hydroxyethyl starch].

For high molecular hydroxyethylstarch (MW 450000, DS 0.7-0.8) an adequate volume effect has been demonstrated in numerous experimental and clinical studies; this colloid is, therefore, suitable for primary volume replacement as well as for preoperative normovolemic hemodilution. In contrast to colloids hitherto known HES infusion results in hyperamylasemia of probably non-pathogenic importance but significance for differential diagnosis in the post-operative period. Anaphylactoid reactions to HES are infrequent (0.08%). With regard to the manifestation and the degree of severity these reaction

Maternal cardiovascular dynamics. VII. Intrapartum blood volume changes.

Blood volume was measured in 75 normal pregnant women at term and serially at 10 and 60 minutes and on Days 1 and 3 post partum in women delivered vaginally and on Days 1, 3, and 5 in women who underwent cesarean section. The mean blood volume at term was 5.95 L. and 83.3 c.c. per kilogram, an increase of 44 and 16%, respectively, over nonpregnant values. The increment appeared to be related to lean body mass and the weight of the neonate alone and to the combined weights of the neonate and placenta, but the wide range of values precluded statistical significance. The blood volume loss at 60 m…

Blood volume (51Cr) in severe protein-calorie malnutrition.

The intravascular volumes were determined in 42 protein-calorie-depleted Shi children, and in 14 healthy patients. The red cell volume (RCV) was determined by a radiochromium technique; the total blood volume (TBV), the plasma volume (PV), and the total circulating albumin (TCA) were derived. The values were related to weight without edema, to expected weight for height, and to body surface area. Related values were averaged and were correlated with both the weight deviation and the plasma albumin level. Figures for healthy Shi children were comparable with American normal standards. Malnouris…

Increased cerebral blood volume in benign intracranial hypertension.

In two patients with benign intracranial hypertension, the regional cerebral blood volume was markedly elevated (mean of 85 percent) while regional cerebral blood flow was slightly reduced (mean of 10 percent). Reduction of cerebrospinal fluid pressure by removal of cerebrospinal fluid reduced the mean values of regional cerebral blood volume by 13 percent without significant change in regional cerebral blood flow. The abnormal regional volume and regional flow returned to normal concurrent with the clinical improvement. Vinous engorgement and increased intracranial blood volume appear to play…

Tobacco smoking: A stimulus for blood volume expansion.

Tobacco smoking involves the inhalation of carbon monoxide (CO), a gas that binds to hemoglobin molecules to form carboxyhemoglobin (COHb), … d LF groups, respectively. The CO-rebreathing technique was applied to assess HbM and intravascular blood volumes. A two-way ANOVA was performed to detect differences in means of hematological and endurance performance parameters. VO2peak was found higher in MF groups (p < 0.001) but was similar between groups of similar fitness level (p = 0.57). Accordingly, …

Quantification of myocardial extracellular volume without blood sampling.

AIMS: Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) T1 relaxation time mapping is an established technique primarily used to identify diffuse interstitial fibrosis and oedema. The myocardial extracellular volume (ECV) can be calculated from pre- and post-contrast T1 relaxation times and is a reproducible parametric index of the proportion of volume occupied by non-cardiomyocyte components in myocardial tissue. The conventional calculation of the ECV requires blood sampling to measure the haematocrit (HCT). Given the high variability of the HCT, the blood collection is recommended within 24 h of the CMR sca

Neonatal blood culture inoculant volume: feasibility and challenges.

BACKGROUND: Clinicians often express concerns about poor sensitivity of blood cultures in neonates resulting from inadequate inoculant volumes. Our objective was to determine the inoculant volume sent for neonatal sepsis evaluations and identify areas of improvement. METHODS: Single-center prospective observational study of infants undergoing sepsis evaluation. Blood volume was determined by clinician documentation over 21 months, and additionally by weighing culture bottles during 12 months. Adequate volume was defined as ≥1 mL total inoculant per evaluation. For first-time evaluations, loca…

Pulmonary capillary blood volume in hyperpnea-induced bronchospasm.

Reactive hyperemia of the bronchial circulation has been postulated to contribute to the airway narrowing that occurs following exercise or … ry blood flow would increase in association with HIB, resulting in increases in pulmonary capillary blood volume (VC). We measured VC by using two test gases of varying oxygen concentration to determine the diffusing capacity of the lung for carbon monoxide (DL(CO)) before and after a period of hyperpnea in 13 subjects with asthma with HIB and 10 control subje …
