Relative blood volume monitoring during hemodialysis in end stage renal disease patients.

A crucial point in the haemodialysis (HD) treatment is the reliable assessment of hydration status. An inadequate removed volume may lead to chronic fluid overload which can lead to hypertension, left ventricular hypertrophy and heart failure. Therefore, the estimation of the hydration state and the management of a well-tolerated water removal is an important challenge. This exploratory study aims at identifying new parameters obtained from continuous Blood Volume Monitoring (BVM) allowing a qualitative evaluation of hydration status for verifying the adequacy of HD setting parameters (e.g UFR

Strategies for improving hemodynamic stability in cardiac-compromised dialysis patients.

In hemodialysis patients, structural changes at all levels of the cardiovascular system are common. The presence of these cardiovascular changes is a risk factor for the development of intradialytic hypotension. This explains the clinical observation that the incidence of symptomatic hypotension is high in elderly hemodialysis patients, who often have a history of long-standing hypertension and atherosclerosis, and in hemodialysis patients with cardiovascular disease. With an increasing number of cardiovascular compromised dialysis patients, special attention should be given to this group of p

Maternal cardiovascular dynamics. VII. Intrapartum blood volume changes.

Blood volume was measured in 75 normal pregnant women at term and serially at 10 and 60 minutes and on Days 1 and 3 post partum in women delivered vaginally and on Days 1, 3, and 5 in women who underwent cesarean section. The mean blood volume at term was 5.95 L. and 83.3 c.c. per kilogram, an increase of 44 and 16%, respectively, over nonpregnant values. The increment appeared to be related to lean body mass and the weight of the neonate alone and to the combined weights of the neonate and placenta, but the wide range of values precluded statistical significance. The blood volume loss at 60 m
