Menstrual dysfunction and body weight dissatisfaction among Finnish young athletes and non-athletes.

To determine the prevalence of menstrual dysfunction (MD; ie, oligomenorrhea or amenorrhea) and attitudes toward body weight among athletes and non-athletes, we studied a cohort of athletes and non-athletes, in adolescence (14-16 years) and subsequently in young adulthood (18-20 years). We further studied the differences between athletes reporting MD and eumenorrheic athletes at both time periods and identified physical and behavioral characteristics that might predict MD in young adulthood. Data were collected using questionnaires, accelerometers, and a pre-participation screening. In adolesc

Appearance comparison and other appearance-related influences on body dissatisfaction in everyday life.

Although appearance comparisons, self-monitoring, and appearance-related comments have been linked to body dissatisfaction in prior studies, the combined and unique influences of these variables on state body dissatisfaction in daily life has yet to be explored. The present study addressed this gap, and also evaluated whether these state-based effects were stronger for individuals with trait-level body image disturbances (internalization and body dissatisfaction). Eighty-four women completed baseline measures of trait internalization and body dissatisfaction, and then reported momentary experi…

Body dissatisfaction and symptoms of bulimia nervosa prospectively predict suicide ideation in adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: Symptoms of eating disorders have been established as significant concurrent correlates with suicide ideation and behaviors in ad … tion and behaviors at each time point during school hours. RESULTS: Regression analyses found that body dissatisfaction was a significant prospective predictor of suicide ideation severity at the 6- and 12-month follow-ups, symptoms of bulimia nervosa (binge-eating disorder and purging) predicted suicide ideation severity at the 12-month follow-up only, and symptoms …

Dissatisfaction with own body makes patients with eating disorders more sensitive to pain.

Body image represents a multidimensional concept including body image evaluation and perception of body appearance. Disturbances of body image perception are considered to be one of the central aspects of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. There is growing evidence that body image distortion can be associated with changes in pain perception. The aim of our study was to examine the associations between body image perception, body dissatisfaction, and nociception in women with eating disorders and age-matched healthy control women. We measured body dissatisfaction and pain sensitivity in 61 p…

Illusory Obesity Triggers Body Dissatisfaction Responses in the Insula and Anterior Cingulate Cortex.

In today's Western society, concerns regarding body size and negative feelings toward one's body are all too common. However, little is known about the neural mechanisms underlying negative feelings toward the body and how they relate to body perception and eating-disorder pathology. Here, we used multisensory illusions to elicit illusory ownership of obese and slim bodies during functional magnetic resonance imaging. The results implicate the anterior insula and the anterior cingulate cortex in the development of negative feelings toward the body through functional interactions with the poste

Body dissatisfaction, self-esteem, and overweight among inner-city Hispanic children and adolescents.

We examined the associations among self-reported body image, self-esteem, and measured body mass index (BMI) in El-Salvadoran American youth. Higher BMI was associated with body size dissatisfaction, lower peer esteem, and attempts to lose weight. Body size dissatisfaction was also significantly related to self-esteem in these El-Salvadoran American youth.

Associations among acculturative stress, body ideal internalization, body dissatisfaction and eating pathology among Asian, Black, and Latino men.

BACKGROUND: Empirical findings support the association between acculturative stress and eating pathology, however, relatively few studies have examined mechanisms of this link among racially and ethnically diverse men. The current study addressed these gaps by examining the potential roles of thin-, and muscular-ideal internalization and body dissatisfaction as mediators of the relation between acculturative stress and eating pathology among Asian, Black, and Latino men. METHODS: Adult men from across the United States (Asian N = 110; Black N = 117; Latino N = 85) completed measures of accult…

Subjective and objective stress during body exposure: a comparison of adolescents with anorexia nervosa versus high body dissatisfaction.

OBJECTIVE: Body dissatisfaction (BD) is a risk factor for the development of an eating disorder (ED) and a negative predictor for treatment outcome in adolescents with anorexia nervosa (AN). As a clinical core symptom and a relevant maintaining factor of AN, body image disturbance and BD are highly relevant target variables for therapeutic interventions. Body exposure (BE) was found as being effective for reducing BD in adolescents with EDs and high BD. However, the underlying mechanisms of BE are still not clear, with habituation processes being discussed as one possible mechanism. METHODS: …

Early menarche and body dissatisfaction in individuals with eating disorders: A modest but significant association.

Early pubertal timing, marked by earlier maturation than peers, is posited by the developmental readiness theory as a risk-factor for eating disorder pathology and body dissatisfaction in community samples. However, less is known about its association with symptom severity in individuals with an eating disorder. The present cross-sectional study including a clinical sample of 961 females, pre-registered on the Open Science Network, examined whether those reporting early menarche (≤11 years) had elevated levels of eating disorder pathology or body dissatisfaction. In regression analyses, the Ea…

Emotional Distress and Body Dissatisfaction: The Mediating Role of Social Media and Emotional Regulation.

BACKGROUND: Body dissatisfaction is defined as a negative attitude towards one's body, characterized by emotional disorders. Currently, problematic use of social media seems to be associated with an increase in body dissatisfaction and emotional distress. Therefore, the present study examined the relationship between emotional distress (i.e., depression, anxiety, and stress) and body dissatisfaction, as well as the mediating role of emotional regulation and problematic social media use in this relationship. In addition, the study aims to identify sex differences in the four research variables.…

The Longitudinal Associations of Body Dissatisfaction with Health and Wellness Behaviors in Midlife and Older Women.

Emerging research suggests that body dissatisfaction (BD) is prevalent among midlife and older women (i.e., upwards of 70%). Cross-sectionally, BD is associated with myriad poor health and wellness outcomes (e.g., depression, disordered eating, bad nutrition) in midlife/older women. However, relatively few studies have examined the longitudinal relations between BD and health outcomes in this population. This preliminary study investigated the longitudinal associations of BD with wellbeing and health-related quality of life (QOL) among midlife/older adult women over one year. Participants (n =…

Effects of induced rumination on body dissatisfaction: Is there any difference between men and women?

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Rumination is a factor in the development and maintenance of body dissatisfaction. However, no study has yet investigated the impact of the type of rumination on body image. The first aim of this study was to examine whether the induction of analytic-abstract vs. concrete-experiential rumination affects body dissatisfaction following an induction of negative body image. The second objective was to examine gender differences in these effects. METHODS: Following induction of negative body image, 102 university undergraduates were randomly assigned to one of three expe…

The economic and social costs of body dissatisfaction and appearance-based discrimination in the United States.

This study estimated the social and economic costs of body dissatisfaction and appearance-based discrimination (specifically, weight and skin-shade discrimination) in the United States (USA) in the 2019 calendar year. We used a prevalence-based approach and a cost-of-illness method to estimate the annual cost of harmful appearance ideals for cases of body dissatisfaction and discrimination based on weight and skin shade. Impacts on conditions/illnesses such as eating disorders that are attributable to body dissatisfaction, weight discrimination and skin-shade discrimination were identified thr…

Emotional regulation and body dissatisfaction: the mediating role of anger in young adult women.

INTRODUCTION: Emotion regulation difficulties have an important role in the presence of negative self-image. These problems in the self-regulation of emotion could lead to negative emotional processes (such as anger) that can lead to body dissatisfaction. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to examine emotion regulation difficulties than can negatively impact self-image and to understand if anger acts as mediator in the relationship between emotion regulation and body dissatisfaction. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out comprising 565 young adult women aged 18-30 years. T…

Influence of the Mass Media and Body Dissatisfaction on the Risk in Adolescents of Developing Eating Disorders.

Media influence may lead adolescents to internalize patterns of physical beauty, resulting in dissatisfaction with their own bodies when they are unable to match up to these patterns. In the constant search for an 'ideal body', adolescents may begin to develop risk behaviors for the development of eating disorders (ED). The object of this study was to analyze the influence of the mass media on body dissatisfaction (BD) and on ED in adolescents, comparing genders. We also analyzed the influence of BD on the risk of developing unsuitable eating behaviors, with risk of ED, comparing genders. A cr…

A longitudinal study of body dissatisfaction and pubertal timing in an ethnically diverse adolescent sample.

In a 7-year study, adolescents' body dissatisfaction (N=1370) was examined across four high school years as a function of pubertal development (perceived timing relative to peers and self-reported physical changes measured during Grades 6-10) in the context of the high school transition. Boys and girls who, during early high school, perceived themselves to be late relative to peers were at risk for body dissatisfaction across the high school years. Boys who were late in pubertal development reported more body dissatisfaction in early high school than on-time boys, but then decreased over time.…

Role of body dissatisfaction in the onset and maintenance of eating pathology: a synthesis of research findings.

OBJECTIVE: Recent findings implicate body dissatisfaction in the development and maintenance of eating pathology. This paper reviews theory and empirical findings regarding the putative origins and consequences of body dissatisfaction because recent findings have not been synthesized or critically evaluated and because these findings have key etiologic and prevention implications. METHODS: A computer-assisted literature review was conducted to locate relevant prospective and experimental studies. RESULTS: There is evidence that perceived pressure to be thin, thin-ideal internalization and el…

Body dissatisfaction, bulimia, and depression among women: the mediating role of drive for thinness.

OBJECTIVE: Past research has called into question the apparent relationship between body dissatisfaction and bulimia among women once effects of depression are statistically controlled. We further investigated interrelations among body dissatisfaction, depression, and bulimia, as well as considered individual differences in drive for thinness, within two samples of young adult women. METHOD: The first sample included women diagnosed with anorexia nervosa (n = 91) or bulimia nervosa (n = 142), whereas the second sample included college student women (N = 228).
