The impact of weight and negative body image on the body schema in undergraduate women.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Alterations of the sensory-motor body schema question the origins of such distortions. For example, in anorexia nervosa where patients think they are broader than they really are (body image) but act as if it was really the case (body schema). To date, the results of studies about what hinders the updating of the body schema so much (weight, body image) have been contradictory. METHODS: We therefore conducted two studies that aimed to assess the impact of weight and body image problems on body schema in 92 young women without anorexia nervosa. For this purpose, we u

The effects and underlying mechanism of interferon therapy on body weight and body composition.

Body weight changes in HCV patients on interferon therapy are well documented. However, the underlying mechanism involved in these changes is poorly understood and rarely reported. The main objectives of this review are to 1) discuss changes in body weight and other compartments of body composition, particularly, body fat, and 2) to discuss the underlying mechanism for these changes. The literature review suggests weight loss (12-29%) as a function of interferon therapy is common, affecting up to 90% of HCV patients. Whilst, loss in weight means proportionate loss in other body compartments (l

Reduced Levels of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor Affect Body Weight, Brain Weight and Behavior.

Neurotrophins, which belong to the family of growth factors, not only play crucial roles during development but are also involved in many processes in the postnatal brain. One representative of neurotrophins is brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). BDNF plays a role in the regulation of body weight and neuronal plasticity and is, therefore, also involved in processes associated with learning and memory formation. Many of the studies on BDNF have been carried out using BDNF-deficient mice. Unfortunately, homozygous deletion of BDNF is lethal in the early postnatal stage, so heterozygous BDN

[Body height, body weight and body mass index of German military recruits. Historical retrospect and current status].

Surveys of conscripts give a chance to pursue the somatic development and the nourishment situation of young men over long times. At the beginning a historical view is given of the organization and methodological basis of medical examinations of German recruits since the introduction of the general conscription at the beginning of the 19th century. Secular changes of the body height are sketched out for selected regions of Germany until the middle of the 20th century. Data of the body weight hardly exist for this time. Until now the greatest continuous documentation of data for body height and

Genome-wide association study of body weight and body size traits in Langya hens.

Langya chicken is a Chinese indigenous chicken breed with high genetic diversity. To systematically analyse the genetic basis of body size traits, eight traits (including BW, comb shape, and body size) of 2 952 Langya hens were measured at 130 days of age and at first egg of age. A total of 9 708 856 high-quality single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were obtained through whole-genome resequencing and used for subsequent genetic parameter estimation and genome-wide association study (GWAS). The results of genetic parameter analysis revealed significant differences in the SNP heritability of d

Body weight divided by squared knee height as an alternative to body mass index.

Weight/height(2) (Quetelet's index) is the basis for defining both underweight and obesity. Height, however, is often not precisely measurable in the elderly due to involutional changes such as spinal deformity. Body volume or body surface area are not proportionately decreased even with height loss. Previous reports have shown that Quetelet's index is overestimated in the elderly with height loss. Then we have made a hypothesis described below. Maximal height or height at youth would better represent the subjects' nutritional or clinical status. The distinction of these two heights has not be

The Interplay Between Body Weight and the Onset of Puberty.

This overview explores the complex relationship between environmental factors, particularly obesity, and the timing of puberty, with a focus on how hormonal and genetic interactions are influenced by external conditions. Puberty (gonadarche) is characterised by the activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis. The onset and progression of puberty vary significantly among individuals, primarily due to genetic factors, with key genes like kisspeptin 1 (KISS1) and makorin ring finger protein 3 (MKRN3) playing a crucial role. Cohesively, this paper emphasises that environmental fact

Body Weight's Role in Infective Endocarditis Surgery.

Objective: to investigate how body mass index (BMI) affects the outcome in patients treated surgically for infective endocarditis (IE). Methods: This is a single-center observational analysis of consecutive patients treated surgically for IE. We divided the cohort into six groups, according to the WHO classification of BMI, and performed subsequent outcome analysis. Results: The patient population consisted of 17 (2.6%) underweight, 249 (38.3%) normal weight, 252 (38.8%) overweight, 83 (12.8%) class I obese, 28 (4.3%) class II obese, and 21 (3.8%) class III, or morbidly obese, patients. The importance of estradiol for body weight regulation in women.

Obesity in women of reproductive age has a number of adverse metabolic effects, including Type II Diabetes (T2D), dyslipidemia, and cardiovascular disease. It is associated with increased menstrual irregularity, ovulatory dysfunction, development of insulin resistance and infertility. In women, estradiol is not only critical for reproductive function, but they also control food intake and energy expenditure. Food intake is known to change during the menstrual cycle in humans. This change in food intake is largely mediated by estradiol, which acts directly upon anorexigenic and orexigenic neuro

Assessment of body weight for age determination in kittens.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to assess the utility of using body weight for age determination in kittens. METHODS: Medical records were reviewed for serial body weight measurements collected from neonatal kittens (up to 8 weeks of age) from a breeding colony of specific pathogen-free domestic shorthair cats and for single-point body weight measurements of privately owned pediatric kittens (6-20 weeks of age) presenting for elective sterilization. Body weights were compared with known dates of birth and age assessed by dental eruption in combination with developmental characteri

Phytochemicals in the Control of Human Appetite and Body Weight.

Since obesity has grown to epidemic proportions, its effective management is a very important clinical issue. Despite the great amount of scientific effort that has been put into understanding the mechanisms that lead to overconsumption and overweight, at the moment very few approaches to weight management are effective in the long term. On the other hand, modern society is also affected by the growing incidence of eating disorders on the other side of the spectrum such as anorexia and bulimia nervosa which are equally difficult to treat. This review will try to summarise the main findings ava

[New findings on the influence of body weight on mortality].

The link between obesity/adipositas and excess mortality has been a prominent topic in medical literature for some time. The epidemic increase in obesity in the western world is going to confront the medical profession with a new problem, particularly with regard to life expectancy trends and appropriate prophylactic measures. Swiss Reinsurance Company (Swiss Re), which has a large portfolio of life reinsurance business, has conducted a follow-up study over an observation period of 25 years (1976 - 2001) to investigate the correlation between body weight and mortality. The findings indicate th

Risk of ovulatory infertility in relation to body weight.

Three hundred seventy-six infertile women in whom there was evidence of ovulatory dysfunction were compared to fertile controls to determine if being excessively under or overweight at the time of planned conception was associated with an increased risk of infertility. In nulligravid women (n = 204), body weight for height 85% or less than "ideal" was associated with a 4.7-fold increase in risk (95% confidence interval = 1.5 to 14.7) of infertility associated with ovulatory dysfunction. Nulligravid women who were 120% or more over their ideal weight were also at increased risk for ovulatory in

Efficacy of body weight vs body surface area-based prednisolone regimen in nephrotic syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Prednisolone dosing regimen based on body surface area (BSA) or body weight (BW) in managing uncomplicated nephrotic syndrome (NS) has been a matter of controversy. METHODS: In this parallel-arm randomized clinical trial, 60 children with uncomplicated NS in relapse were randomized to receive either of two regimens. Children of BW cohort received prednisolone (2 mg/kg/day) till remission (or 6 weeks for first episode); followed by 1.5 mg/kg on alternate days for 4 weeks (or 6 weeks for first episode). Children randomized for BSA cohort received prednisolone (60 mg/m2/day) till rem

Effect of Body Weight and Obesity on Esophageal Function.

The incidence of obesity in the population is gradually increasing. Obesity can cause a variety of complications in the digestive system such as gastroesophageal reflux disease, and impacts the integrity of the esophageal mucosal barrier and esophageal motility. However, not many studies have focused on the effect of varying degrees of obesity on the esophagus. A total of 611 participants were included in this study. We divided them into three groups according to their body mass index (BMI): the normal weight group, the overweight group, and the obesity group. We performed a retrospective comp

Role of oxytocin signaling in the regulation of body weight.

Obesity and its associated metabolic disorders are growing health concerns in the US and worldwide. In the US alone, more than two-thirds of the adult population is classified as either overweight or obese [1], highlighting the need to develop new, effective treatments for these conditions. Whereas the hormone oxytocin is well known for its peripheral effects on uterine contraction during parturition and milk ejection during lactation, release of oxytocin from somatodendrites and axonal terminals within the central nervous system (CNS) is implicated in both the formation of prosocial behaviors
