Long-term weight loss maintenance after inpatient psychotherapy of severely obese patients based on a randomized study: predictors and maintaining factors of health behavior.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to identify predictors of long-term weight loss after inpatient psychodynamic or behavioral psychotherapy of severely obese patients. METHODS: In a longitudinal study, obese patients [body mass index (BMI)>or=35 kg/m(2)] were randomly assigned to behavioral or psychodynamic inpatient treatment. The average treatment duration was 7 weeks. Two hundred sixty-seven obese patients, mostly female (85%), with psychiatric and somatic comorbidity (age, 20-64 years; BMI=35-74 kg/m(2)) were examined with standardized self-report scales at intake, discharge, 1-y

Interaction of leptin and amylin in the long-term maintenance of weight loss in diet-induced obese rats.

We have previously shown that combined amylin + leptin agonism elicits synergistic weight loss in diet-induced obese (DIO) rats. Here, we assessed the comparative efficacy of amylin, leptin, or amylin + leptin in the maintenance of amylin + leptin-mediated weight loss. DIO rats pretreated with the combination of rat amylin (50 microg/kg/day) and murine leptin (125 microg/kg/day) for 4 weeks were subsequently infused with either vehicle, amylin, leptin, or amylin + leptin for an additional 4 weeks. Food intake, body weight, body composition, plasma parameters, and the expression of key metaboli

Insomnia, Psychosocial Well-Being, and Weight Control Behaviors Among Healthy-Weight Adolescent Females: Brief Report.

BACKGROUND: Weight control behaviors (WCBs) typically involve appearance- or health-driven behaviors that may be influenced by physiological, psychological, or social factors. Sleep disturbances like insomnia are an important area of research for adolescent populations, as early intervention may result in improvements in other physical and mental health domains. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship of insomnia, psychosocial well-being, and current WCBs in healthy-weight female adolescents. METHOD: Female adolescents (N = 323; Mage = 12.33 ± .04) who had healthy body m

[Pharmacological treatment of insomnia in children with neurological disorders].

INTRODUCTION: Insomnia is usual, and a serious problem in children with neurological disorders. Few studies have been made of this and above all there are no guide lines or suggestions as to how to treat these problems. The difficulty is made worse by the different characteristics of the insomnia and of the affected children themselves. Poor sleeping is associated with other pathology of the patient (mental retardation, convulsions, etc.). DEVELOPMENT: We have revised the different modes of treatment, particularly pharmacological, which are available today. Guidelines as to how to handle this

Implicit approach-avoidance tendencies toward food and body stimuli absent in individuals with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and healthy controls.

OBJECTIVE: Body and food-related information are thought to activate cognitive biases and contribute to the maintenance of eating disorders (ED). Approach-avoidance biases may play an important role in the maintenance of dietary restriction and excessive food intake. Therefore, the present study aimed to examine approach-avoidance biases toward food and body stimuli in individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), and healthy controls (HC). METHODS: The study included 42 individuals with AN, 24 individuals with BN, and 38 HCs. We used two implicit Approach-Avoidance Tasks (AAT

A combined healthy strategy for successful weight loss, weight maintenance and improvement of hepatic lipid metabolism.

Obesity is critically related with the development of metabolic and pathophysiological alterations among which non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is of especial relevance. Although there are numerous strategies to successfully treat obesity, the prevention of weight regain still remains challenging for individuals who have undergone weight loss programs. In such context, diet and physical activity are considered essential for the regulation of body weight and lipid metabolism. In this study, rats were fed a high-fat diet (HFD) to induce obesity and alterations in hepatic lipid metabolis

Exercise, weight maintenance, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease risk: a Chinese cohort study.

Background: Exercise has been reported to be associated with a reduced risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), but there is no consensus on the role of weight changes in this association. This study aims to investigate whether the impact of exercise on NAFLD is mainly dependent on weight changes or is inherent to exercise itself. Methods: The study recruited 1671 Chinese NAFLD-free adults in 2019, and collected their exercise habits as well as 3 years of medical examination data including anthropometric measurements, blood biochemistry parameters, and liver ultrasound results. Medical interventions in adolescent obesity.

The prevalence of adolescent obesity has tripled since the 1960s. Adolescent obesity is a strong predictor of adult obesity and its related comorbidities; hence, its management has become a major focus in adolescent care. Decreasing caloric intake seems to best predict maintenance of long-term weight loss. Although isolated physical activity has not shown to be effective for weight loss, appropriate levels of physical activity can alter body composition and contribute to weight maintenance. Behavior-modification techniques serve as useful adjuncts by facilitating patient adherence. Multidiscip

Loss of Sult1a1 reduces body weight and increases browning of white adipose tissue.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Overweight and obesity affects millions of individuals worldwide and consequently represents a major public health concern. Individuals living with overweight and obesity have difficulty maintaining a low body weight due to known physiological mechanisms which prevent further weight loss and drive weight regain. In contrast, mechanisms which promote low body weight maintenance receive less attention and are largely unknown. To uncover these intrinsic mechanisms, we investigated a human cohort of constitutionally thin (CT) individuals which maintain a low body weight a

Dose-Response Profiles in Incretin and Multi-Agonist Obesity Pharmacotherapy.

Incretin and multi-agonist therapies have transformed obesity pharmacotherapy, but dose selection remains less mature than efficacy assessment. This critical narrative review examines nonlinear relationships among administered dose, systemic exposure, weight and cardiometabolic benefit, gastrointestinal tolerability, treatment persistence, and maintenance. Across established and newer programs, average efficacy generally increases with dose, yet incremental gains may narrow at higher exposure while adverse-event burden and discontinuation can increase. The maturity of evidence is heterogeneous

Lorcaserin plus lifestyle modification for weight loss maintenance: Rationale and design for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Few studies have examined the efficacy of recently approved medications for chronic weight management in facilitating the maintenance of lost weight. This paper provides an overview of the design and rationale for a trial investigating whether lorcaserin, when combined with behavioral weight loss maintenance sessions (WLM), will facilitate the maintenance of losses of ≥5% of initial weight. METHODS: In this two-phase trial, participants with obesity will enroll in a 14-week run-in diet program consisting of weekly group lifestyle modification sessions and a 1000-1200kcal/d me

Long-term effects of dietary protein and carbohydrate quality on prediabetes remission: results from the PREVIEW randomised multinational diabetes prevention trial.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Recent studies advocate prediabetes remission as a goal in diabetes prevention, but the optimal dietary composition for prediabetes remission over the long term is unknown. We aimed to examine the long-term effects on prediabetes remission of a prudent diet with moderate protein and a moderate glycaemic index (GI) (akin to general dietary guidelines) vs a high-protein, low-GI diet. METHODS: This study is a secondary analysis of PREVIEW, which is a 3 year, multicentre, parallel, randomised trial. Adults with overweight/obesity (BMI ≥ 25 and <30 kg/m2 or BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2, respect

Effects of dietary inorganic trivalent chromium (Cr3+) on the development of glucose homeostasis in rats.

Inorganic chromium (Cr3+) is classified as an essential trace element on the basis of a small dietary requirement for the maintenance of efficient glucose homeostasis. The present study has carefully scrutinised this claim by examining food intake, body weight gain, glycosylated haemoglobins, plasma glucose and insulin concentrations, glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity in two groups of Wistar rats fed either a Cr3+-deficient (0.03 mg/kg) or Cr3+-containing (1 mg/kg) diet for 32 days from weaning at 3 weeks. At 53 days of age, control rats weighed 183 +/- 7 g (body weight gain 155 +/- 6

Do mental disorders and eating patterns affect long-term weight loss maintenance?

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the impact of mental disorders on weight loss maintenance among initially successful weight losers who participated in a very-low-calorie diet program. METHOD: A total of 251 obese individuals were assessed in a prospective longitudinal study over a period of 4 years. Mental disorders and eating patterns were assessed by structured interviews at baseline and by standardized questionnaires at baseline (T(1)), after 1 year (T(2)) and on 3-year follow-up (T(3)). Analyses were performed with an intention-to-treat method. RESULTS: Based on the intention-to-tr

Body weight and the initiation of puberty.

The onset and progression through the various stages of puberty are influenced by a number of factors (Fig. 2). In both animals and humans, the age of puberty appears to be related more to body weight than to chronologic age. Undernutrition and low body fat, or an altered ratio of lean mass to body fat, seem to delay the adolescent spurt and to retard the onset of menarche. According to Frisch, a minimum level of fatness (17% of body weight) is associated with menarche; however, a heavier minimum weight for height, representing an increased amount of body fat (22%), appears necessary for the o

Currently available drugs for the treatment of obesity: Sibutramine and orlistat.

The currently available drugs for long-term treatment of obesity are sibutramine and orlistat. They have been shown to be able to induce significant weight loss, with important co-morbidity reduction, allowing the maintenance of reduced body weight for at least 1-2 years. Cardiostimulating and gastrointestinal adverse effects are however not negligible.

Protocol for a randomised controlled trial of a weight maintenance intervention to promote fat loss in pregnant individuals with obesity.

INTRODUCTION: In pregnancy, people with obesity or excess adiposity are prone to excess gestational weight gain (GWG) and have the highest risks for multiple maternal morbidities. Epidemiological studies suggest that the lowest incidence of adverse maternal and infant outcomes occurs with GWG lower than current recommendations (<5 kg) and with gestational weight maintenance, resulting in fat mass loss, in those with obesity. Data from randomised clinical trials are needed to evaluate the efficacy of a fat mass loss intervention on pregnancy outcomes. The objective of this proof-of-principle ra
