Stem cells and neonatal brain injury.

Recent advances in regenerative medicine and in our understanding of neurogenesis may lead to new ways of recovering neuronal function lost or damaged during the perinatal period; such injuries are not amenable to conventional therapies. We review recent experimental studies based on immature rodental models of neonatal brain injury, especially hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. The developing brain is revealed to have considerable potential with respect to proliferation and migration to the injured site. However, the generation of fully differentiated neurons is extremely limited after brain in

Brain stem lesions after head injury.

There is little knowledge on the morphology of the brain stem in survivors of head injury, as CT fails to shown brain stem lesions, and neuropathological data is only available from autopsies. As magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sheds new light on morphological lesions of the brain, the authors investigated 100 patients with a severe head injury. MRI was performed in a prospective study within the first seven days after head injury while the patients were still in coma and on ventilation. Relating the location of the lesions as depicted by MRI with the initial CT scan and outcome, death appear…

Dorsal brain stem lipomas: case report.

Intracranial lipomas are uncommon and rarely symptomatic lesions accounting for 0.06 to 0.46% of intracranial lesions. The management of symptomatic dorsal brain stem lipomas was once limited to cerebrospinal fluid diversion, but with recent advances in microsurgery, they now may be directly treated. We report three patients with dorsal brain stem lipomas, two of which involved the quadrigeminal cistern and one of which was in the cisterna magna region. Antenatal documentation by ultrasound examination in one patient represents the first reported in utero diagnosis of quadrigeminal cistern lip…

Recurrent intrinsic brain stem epidermoid cyst.

The authors report the case of a 14-month-old baby boy with an epidermoid cyst located entirely within the pons and medulla, without an exop … large tumor in the cyst wall which was again totally removed. Consistent with the high mortality of brain stem epidermoid cysts in the literature, the child eventually died. The therapeutic problems, surgical options, and consequences are discussed.

Brain-stem anesthesia complicating retrobulbar block.

A previously well 68-year-old man became confused and cyanotic after retrobulbar block for eye surgery. The symptoms resolved within 10 minutes. The author discusses the differential diagnosis of brain-stem anesthesia and proposes recommendations to reduce the incidence of this potentially fatal complication.

Brain-stem haematoma with complete recovery.

A case of CT-diagnosed brain-stem haematoma associated with signs of dorsal medullary involvement is reported. The patient recovered completely within 1 month.

Auditory brain-stem responses in syphilis.

Analysis of auditory brain-stem electrical responses (BSER) provides an effective means of detecting lesions in the auditory pathways. In the present study the wave patterns were analysed in 11 patients with secondary or latent syphilis with no clinical symptoms referrable to the central nervous system and in two patients with congenital syphilis and general paralysis. Decreased amplitudes and prolonged latencies occurred frequently in patients with secondary and with advanced syphilis. This technique is a notable diagnostic advance in detecting syphilitic damage of the brain stem.

Facial myokymia and brain stem tumor.

An autoptic case of facial myokymia in glioma of the pons is described. The facial myokymia was the only symptom for many years. The authors emphasize the importance of the facial myokymia as a precocious sign of pons tumor and stress the meaning of the EMG in the differential diagnosis between facial myokymia in brain stem tumor and facial hyperkinesa in other diseases.

Brain injury and neural stem cells.

Many therapies with potential for treatment of brain injury have been investigated. Few types of cells have spurred as much interest and excitement as stem cells over the past few decades. The multipotentiality and self-renewing characteristics of stem cells confer upon them the capability to regenerate lost tissue in ischemic or degenerative conditions as well as trauma. While stem cells have not yet proven to be clinically effective in many such conditions as was once hoped, they have demonstrated some effects that could be manipulated for clinical benefit. The various types of stem cells ha

Neural Stem Cells and Ischemic Brain.

Stroke activates neural stem cells in the ventricular-subventricular zone (V/SVZ) of the lateral ventricle, which increases neuroblasts and oligodendrocyte progenitor cells (OPCs). Within the ischemic brain, neural stem cells, neuroblasts and OPCs appear to actively communicate with cerebral endothelial cells and other brain parenchymal cells to mediate ischemic brain repair; however, stroke-induced neurogenesis unlikely plays any significant roles in neuronal replacement. In this mini-review, we will discuss recent findings how intercellular communications between stroke-induced neurogenesis

Stem Cells for Neonatal Brain Disorders.

Despite recent advances in neonatal intensive care medicine, neonatal brain injury resulting from intraventricular hemorrhage or hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy remains a major cause of neonatal mortality and neurologic morbidities in survivors. Several studies have indicated that stem cell therapy is a promising novel therapy for neonatal brain injury resulting from these disorders. This review summarizes recent advances in stem cell research for treating neonatal brain injury due to intraventricular hemorrhage or hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy with a particular focus on preclinical data, co

Brain stem lesion mimicking myasthenia gravis.

Brain stem masses may mimic Myasthenia gravis (MG), clinically and electrophysiologically. We present a 38 year-old female patient with a brain stem mass, who has clinical features similar with MG, and revealed a decremental response to repetitive nerve stimulation. Brain stem mass was removed by surgery. In the postoperative period, her complaints were regressed. Control repetitive nerve stimulation examination was normal.

Epidermoid cyst involving the brain stem.

Brain stem epidermoid cysts are extremely rare. We describe an unusual case of prepontine epidermoid cyst with a large part of the tumour insinuating itself into the pons. Microsurgical total excision of tumour was done without producing any new neurological deficits. Cases reported in the literature either had high mortality/morbidity or were only subtotally removed. Relevant literature is reviewed.
