A rare cause of acromegaly: ectopic production of growth hormone-releasing factor by a bronchial carcinoid tumor.

Ectopic production of growth hormone-releasing factor (GRF) is a rare cause of acromegaly. In addition to its production by gangliocytomas, both hypothalamic and intrasellar, in rare cases various neuroendocrine neoplasms produce the substance, with resultant growth hormone cell hyperplasia of the pituitary and acromegaly. We report an endocrinologically well-documented case of a GRF-producing bronchial carcinoid tumor in which the associated acromegaly was cured by lobectomy.

Intra-abdominal ectopic bronchogenic cyst with a mucinous neoplasm harboring a GNAS mutation: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Bronchogenic cysts are congenital cysts caused by abnormal sprouting from the ventral foregut during fetal life. They usually occur in the mediastinum or lung, but there are very rare cases of ectopic bronchogenic cysts that develop in the abdominal cavity. A unique intra-abdominal ectopic bronchogenic cyst with a mucinous neoplasm that was producing carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), harboring a GNAS mutation, is reported. The present case may contribute to clarifying the mechanism of tumorigenesis and malignant transformation of ectopic bronchogenic cysts. CASE SUMMARY: In 2007, a

A case report of bronchial pleomorphic adenoma in a child in China.

BACKGROUND: Paediatric cases of pleomorphic adenoma of the bronchus are rare in clinical practice, despite pleomorphic adenoma being the most common histological form of salivary gland neoplasm. To date, no such cases have been reported in China. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of pleomorphic adenoma of the bronchus in a 10-year-old child with no obvious positive signs on examination. Chest-enhanced computed tomography and bronchoscopy showed a large white mass in the right principal bronchus. The patient was treated by bronchial mass resection. Biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of pleomorph

Widespread metachronous carcinoid tumour metastases to the head and neck: a unique presentation.

Carcinoid tumours are usually slow-growing, neuroendocrine neoplasms that primarily affect the gastrointestinal tract and bronchial tree. Although relatively rare, isolated, single metastasis to the head and neck has been reported. We present a unique case of 6 metachronous carcinoid metastases to both parotid glands, the left submandibular gland, upper lip, and thyroid, over 3 years. To our knowledge, this widespread presentation in the head and neck has not previously been reported.

Computed-tomographic-guided biopsy of thoracic nodules: a revision of 583 lesions.

OBJECTIVES: In pulmonary lesions, when bronchial or trans-bronchial biopsy is negative, thoracic Fine-Needle Aspiration Biopsy (FNAB) allows to obtain a cytological or histological diagnosis. The purpose of the current study is to investigate the usefulness of CT-guided FNAB to define the nature of pulmonary or thoracic lesions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between May 1995 and September 2005, 583 patients (453 males, 133 females), with thoracic lesions, without evident intrabronchial neoplasm, underwent CT-guided FNAB of thoracic nodules. FNAB was performed with 19-20-21 gauge needles, disposable

Bronchial carcinoma in a red-shouldered hawk (Buteo lineatus).

Respiratory neoplasms are rare in birds. This report describes carcinoma of the bronchial epithelium in a red-shouldered hawk (Buteo lineatus) that presented with weakness and lethargy lasting 4 days that progressed to seizures. Grossly, the caudal air sac and coelomic cavity contained approximately 15 ml of dark brown cloudy fluid that displaced the intestines cranially. Nodular plaques were present on the viscera and air sacs. Microscopic examination of tissues revealed a mass that expanded the bronchial lumen and was composed of papillary proliferations of rows of small cuboidal epithelial

Silico-Tuberculosis Mimicking Malignancy.

Silico-tuberculosis is the combination of silicosis and tuberculosis (TB). Symptoms of TB such as dyspnea, cough, and hemoptysis may precede the diagnosis of an endo-bronchial mass lesion on chest imaging. Among workers who were exposed to silica, TB was more common, and experiments indicated that silica inhibits alveolar macrophage activity and severe exposure induces apoptosis. Endobronchial neoplasms, which are tumors primarily affecting the bronchial lumen, are uncommon and may show up in a wide variety of different ways pathologically. Cough, chest discomfort, wheezing, hemoptysis, recurr…

Chronic unilateral hyperlucent lung. A consecutive series of 40 patients.

A clinical series of 40 consecutive patients with chronic unilateral hyperlucent lung was analysed. Swyer-James (MacLeod) syndrome turned out to be the most common diagnosis (18 patients, 45%). Other causes were localized emphysema (8 patients, 20%), congenital hypoplastic pulmonary artery (4 patients, 10%), previous massive pulmonary embolism (4 patients, 10%), bronchial carcinoma (3 patients, 7.5%), sequelae of radiation therapy (2 patients, 5%) and benign intrabronchial neoplasm (1 patient, 2.5%). The reduction of pulmonary vasculature was scored (0-9). The most extensive reduction was foun

[Diagnosis and surgical treatment of bronchial adenoma].

Twenty one patients with bronchial adenoma, treated surgically in our hospital, include three different neoplasms: carcinoid, cylindroma and mucoepidermoid adenoma. In this series, clinical characteristics were: bronchial obstruction when the tumor protrudes into the lumen and infection, first in the bronchus (bronchitis or bronchiectasis) then in the parenchyma (acute, recurrent or chronic pneumonia, tension abscess). Ball-valve action of the tumor may result in lobar or segmental emphysema. Preoperatively, most of the patients had been misdiagnosed as bronchitis, carcinoma of lung, bronchiec

Benign endobronchial mesenchymal tumors: their relationship to parenchymal pulmonary hamartomas.

The clinical and pathological data were reviewed on 17 patients with benign endobronchial mesenchymal tumors seen at the New England Deaconess Hospital between 1942 and 1981. The tumors were compared histologically to 147 intraparenchymal hamartomas studied during the same period. Thirteen tumors involved central bronchi and four occupied small, peripheral airways. These 17 lesions displayed overlapping histological features and ranged from predominantly cartilaginous to lipomatous growths. Mixtures of cartilage and other mesenchymal elements characterized 14 tumors, and adipose tissue was the

Comparison between community-acquired pneumonia and post-obstructive pneumonia associated with endobronchial tumors.

BACKGROUND: Endobronchial tumors can infiltrate the bronchial wall or protrude into the bronchial lumen, causing post-obstructive pneumonia (POP). Differentiating between POP and community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is challenging due to similar clinical, laboratory, and imaging findings, which can delay the diagnosis and treatment of endobronchial tumors. METHODS: We compared general demographic information, laboratory test results, lung CT images, bronchoscopic observations, pathological findings between the POP group and the CAP group. RESULTS: (1) The POP group consisted mainly of older in

Bronchial Paraganglioma with SDHB Deficiency.

Though most paragangliomas arise as sporadic tumors, the recent advantages in the genetic screening revealed that about 30 % of paragangliomas are linked to hereditary mutations, such as those involving SDH genes. A 22-year-old woman carrying a left main bronchus tumor underwent surgery in our institution. Her past medical history included a GIST without KIT or PDGFRA mutation. The histological examination revealed a nested proliferation of medium-sized cells expressing neuroendocrine markers (chromogranin A and synaptophysin). The neoplastic cells failed to express SDHB gene product. These fi

A rare case: Endobronchial solitary mixed papilloma.

Endobronchial solitary papillomas are extremely rare lung neoplasms originating from the bronchial surface epithelium. They often present with cough or recurrent hemoptysis. These tumors are benign, but they should be followed closely because they may even have a low probability of malignant transformation features. It should be kept in mind that malignancy may develop especially if the patient is a smoker. Although the etiology is not known for certain, it is thought to be caused by human papillomavirus in some cases. A 43-year-old male patient was admitted with a complaint of chronic cough.

Exfoliative cytology in the rapid diagnosis of pulmonary blastomycosis.

Four patients with pulmonary blastomycosis are reported. Their bronchial washings, submitted for cytologic evaluation and stained by the standard Papanicolau technique, yielded the diagnosis, subsequently confirmed by cultural identification of the fungus. In three additional cases, retrospective evaluation of cytologic material also revealed the organism, even though the diagnostic significance was not appreciated originally. Since cytologic techniques are simple, readily available, and rapid, they can be helpful in differentiating pulmonary neoplasms from pulmonary blastomycosis, thus reduci

Pulmonary ossifying carcinoid - MEN in a male?

Pulmonary carcinoid tumors are considered as low-grade neoplasms, seen as centrally located endobronchial masses or as peripheral circumscribed nodules. Calcification or ossification is a known phenomenon, but presentation as large bony mass is extremely uncommon. Herein, we report a case of ossifying bronchial carcinoid along with nodular Hashimoto's thyroiditis as incidental autopsy findings in a 32-year-old patient with a prior recent excision of pituitary macroadenoma. This association suggests the possibility of multiple endocrine neoplasia in this young male.

Ectopic adrenocorticotrophic hormone production and neoplasm.

Three patients presented with severe hypokalaemic, hypochloraemic alkalosis, muscle weakness and later cutaneoud pigmentation. There were few signs of Cushing's syndrome. Two had bronchial and one pancreatic neoplasm. Plasma cortisol and urinary steroid metabolites were extremely elevated and synacthen stimulation showed significant adrenal capacity even with adrenal metastases. Aminoglutethamide reduced plasma cortisol in two patients.

Long-term survival following bronchotomy for polypoid bronchial carcinoid tumours.

OBJECTIVE: Typical bronchial carcinoids are very low grade neuroendocrine neoplasm of the tracheobronchial tree and have very good results in surgical treatment. Surgical treatment varies from bronchotomy-excision to major resective procedures. We presented our results of bronchotomy, simple excision and long-term follow-up. METHODS: In Atatürk Centre for Chest Disease and Chest Surgery, 16 patients with bronchial carcinoid tumour underwent bronchotomy-excision over a 23-year-period. In all of the cases tumours were in polypoid type. Except these 16 cases 51 patients with bronchial carcinoids

Retroperitoneal leiomyosarcoma and gastroparesis: a new association and review of tumor-associated intestinal pseudo-obstruction.

Intestinal pseudo-obstruction has been associated with several types of underlying neoplasms and has been hypothesized to result from a paraneoplastic process in patients with small cell lung carcinoma and bronchial carcinoid. This article documents the first reported association of gastroparesis and a retroperitoneal leiomyosarcoma. A paraneoplastic process is the proposed basis of this relationship, inasmuch as these syndromes have been noted in other tumors of mesodermal origin. The resolution of intestinal dysmotility after tumor resection, as described here, has only rarely been reported.

[The cancer register and notification responsibility].

Changes of the age-specific and age-standardized incidence of malignant neoplasms in the GDR between 1962 and 1980 are investigated. A series of cancer localisation has increased in which case improved diagnostics and increased risk are discussed as causes (cancer of colon and rectum, of the pancreas, the breast and the testicle). The epidemics of bronchial cancer has apparently reached its climax, the admission rates stagnate. Cancer of the stomach and recently also cancer of the gallbladder and the extrahepatic bile ducts decrease in their frequency.
