Pre-menarchal bulimia nervosa.

Although pre-pubertal anorexia nervosa has been well described, pre-pubertal bulimic behaviour in the context of this disorder appears to be uncommon. There have been no published reports of pre-pubertal bulimia nervosa occurring independently. Of 323 patients with bulimia nervosa attending an eating disorders research clinic between 1980 and 1989, the authors identified six patients who described pre-menarchal binge eating in the absence of a concurrent history of anorexia nervosa or massive obesity. Three (0.93%) of these patients described a pre-menarchal onset of bulimia nervosa, but there…

State self-esteem ratings in women with bulimia nervosa and bulimia nervosa in remission.

OBJECTIVE: Bulimia nervosa (BN) is associated with low self-esteem. This study was designed to assess whether low self-esteem persists in nondepressed individuals who have recovered from BN (BN-R). METHOD: Study groups included BN (n = 22), BN-R (n = 20), and healthy controls (n = 42). Participants were medication-free, and none met criteria for current major depression. Assessment instruments included the State Self-Esteem Scale (SSES), a self-rating scale designed to measure state-related changes in self-esteem. RESULTS: Consistent with previous reports, SSES scores for BN were lower than …

Assessing motivation to change in bulimia nervosa: the Bulimia Nervosa Stages of Change Questionnaire.

OBJECTIVE: To assess motivation to change in adolescent patients with bulimia nervosa through the Bulimia Nervosa Stages of Change Questionnaire (BNSOCQ), an instrument adapted from the Anorexia Nervosa Stages of Change Questionnaire (ANSOCQ) already validated in anorexic patients. METHOD: Subjects were 30 bulimia nervosa patients (mean age = 16.3 years) who were receiving treatment at an eating disorders unit. The evaluation instruments were: the BNSOCQ, the Eating Disorders Inventory (EDI-2) and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). The BNSOCQ was re-administered 1 week later to evaluate tes…

Serum salivary isoamylase levels in patients with anorexia nervosa, bulimia or bulimia nervosa.

Salivary isoamylase levels were studied in a sample of 35 women with bulimia, anorexia nervosa, or bulimia nervosa. Salivary isoamylase elevation was related to the presence of sham eating, evidenced by elevated isoamylase values in patients with bulimia nervosa or bulimia, and depressed isoamylase values in patients with anorexia nervosa. Salivary isoamylase levels may provide insight and have bearing on the functional interrelationship between appetite regulation and ingestive behavior in patients with eating disorders, as abnormalities may occur during both the cephalic as well as the oral …

A study of neurocognition in bulimia nervosa and eating disorder not otherwise specified-bulimia type.

Neurocognition in bulimia nervosa (BN) is under-researched. This study investigated aspects of attention (d2-Letter Cancellation Task), inhibitory control (Stroop and go/no-go task), and decision making (Game of Dice Task) in 40 people with BN, 30 with eating disorder not otherwise specified-BN type (EDNOS-BN), and 65 healthy controls (HCs). The National Adult Reading Test (NART) and Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21) were also administered. Analyses of covariance (covariates: age, NART, and DASS-21) showed that people with BN and EDNOS-BN performed as well as HCs on all tasks. Attentio…

Is multi-impulsive bulimia a distinct type of bulimia nervosa: Psychopathology and EMA findings.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if clinically defined multi-impulsive bulimia (MIB) can be validated using an empirical classification approach. METHOD: One hundred and twenty-five women who met DSM-IV criteria for bulimia nervosa were interviewed and completed a two-week EMA protocol. Participants who reported at least three highly impulsive behaviors were compared to participants who did not report such impulsive behavior. Also, Latent Class Analysis (LCA) was conducted to determine if the MIB classification could be replicated empirically. RESULTS: LCA produced a two-class solution consistent wit…

Food addiction and bulimia nervosa.

In individuals with obesity and binge eating disorder (BED), eating patterns can show addictive qualities, with similarities to substance use disorders on behavioural and neurobiological levels. Bulimia nervosa (BN) has received less attention in this regard, despite their regular binge eating symptoms. The Yale Food Addiction Scale (YFAS) was developed according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, diagnostic criteria for substance use disorders, and food addiction can be diagnosed when at least three addiction symptoms are endorsed and a clinically si…

Illness perception in bulimia nervosa.

The study was designed to extend our understanding of illness perceptions in patients with bulimia nervosa (BN). Seventy-eight participants with BN or BN-type Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (EDNOS-BN) completed the Revised Illness Perception Questionnaire (IPQ-R) (Moss-Morris et al., 2002). Clinical variables were also assessed. Participants experienced their ED as chronic, with serious consequences and high associated levels of anxiety and depression. The disorder was attributed primarily to psychological causes. The results indicate the perceived severity of BN, and high level of as…

Monetary costs associated with bulimia.

OBJECTIVE: The direct monetary costs for food and laxatives, diet pills, and diuretics used by individuals with bulimia nervosa (BN) have not been studied. METHOD: Ten participants with a presenting clinical diagnosis of BN completed a 7-day food record at the outset of treatment in order to provide estimates of weekly and yearly monetary costs for food and associated symptoms. RESULTS: Participants reported means of 3.6 purge episodes, 2.5 objective binge episodes, and 2.4 subjective binge eating episodes per week. Mean total food costs were $106.98/week (SD = $53.88) or $5,581.79/year (SD …

[Psychogenic determinants of bulimia nervosa].

Eating disorders, especially bulimia, are considered to be the most sensitive barometer of the process of Westernisation and (partly for this reason) cultural, family and psychological factors seem to play a key role in their aetiology. The increase in their frequency can be linked with the significance that is ascribed to the body and eating in Western culture. Viewed from the psychodynamic perspective, eating disorders are treated as a formed by a culture symptomatic manifestation of dysfunction of very varied personality, neurotic and prepsychotic mechanisms. They are expressed through a pe…

Women's experiences of bulimia nervosa.

AIM: This paper reports a study to interpret and understand bulimia nervosa as women experience it. BACKGROUND: Research into bulimia nervosa has focused on prevalence rates, health complications, comorbidity, neurochemical dysregulation, and cultural influences. Despite a multitude of investigations, little published research appraised bulimic women's personal experiences and understanding of this disorder. Such an understanding would assist health care professionals in providing sensitive, empathetic care. METHOD: The principles of Heideggerian phenomenology guided the study. Participants …

Gastric compliance in bulimia nervosa.

Bulimia nervosa (BN) is a psychiatric illness characterized by eating binges followed by inappropriate behavioral attempts to compensate for the binges, usually vomiting or laxative abuse. Patients with BN have disturbances in the development of satiety during a meal as well as disturbances in functions of the upper gastrointestinal tract such as slowed gastric emptying, impaired gastric accommodation reflex and blunted cholecystokinin release. The present study examined gastric compliance and sensory responses to gastric distention in women with BN and controls. Sixteen women with BN and 13 h…
