Bullying and Quality of Life in Pediatric Alopecia Areata.

Alopecia areata (AA) is a clinically heterogeneous disease that is characterized by nonscarring hair loss, nail changes, and increased risk of other autoimmune disease. During clinical visits, children with AA often report bullying. We report survey results that highlight the prevalence of bullying and surrounding emotional impact of AA in pediatric patients. We found that bullying was common overall and additional psychological impact, including impairment of social and home life, was even more common. Children of all ages experienced bullying. Boys reported increased physical bullying. Inter…

[Mental disorders induced by experiences of being bullied].

The author investigated 25 adolescent patients (9 males, 16 females) whose mental disorders seemed to be induced by their experiences of being bullied at school. The patients were treated by the author in the outpatient clinic or the inpatient ward of National Defense Medical College Hospital during 10 years, 1978 through 1988. These patients were classified into 4 groups from the viewpoint of their clinical symptoms and signs. The author called each group as follows; 1) paranoid-hallucinatory group, 2) withdrawal group, 3) escaping-into-fantasy group, and 4) somatoform group. The paranoid-hal

The influence of target personality in the development of workplace bullying.

The Victim Precipitation Theory states that people may exhibit certain characteristics or behaviors that may act as vulnerability factors for either being picked as a target or for provoking others, hence contributing to escalate an underlying conflict and then increase the risk of victimization from others. In line with this, previous research indicates that certain target personality characteristics may be risk factors for exposure to workplace bullying, particularly so trait-anxiety and trait-anger. The evidence is, however, mainly cross-sectional, and longitudinal studies are needed. In ad…

How Clinicians Can Reduce "Bullied Acquiescence".

Clinicians and patients and their families may disagree about a course of treatment, and the ensuing conflict may seem intractable. The parties may request mediation, or use mediation-based approaches, to help resolve the conflict. In the process of mediation, and at other times, parties in conflict may feel so pressured to accept a resolution that they acquiesce unwillingly--and such resolutions often unravel. In this article I investigate how "bullied acquiescence" might happen, and how to avoid it.

Social vulnerability and bullying in children with Asperger syndrome.

Children with Asperger syndrome (AS) have IQ within the normal range but specific impairments in theory of mind, social interaction and communication skills. The majority receive education in mainstream schools and research suggests they are bullied more than typically developing peers. The current study aimed to evaluate factors that predict bullying for such children and also to examine a new measure, the Social Vulnerability Scale (SVS). One hundred and thirty three parents of children with AS completed the SVS and of these 92 parents completed both the SVS and questionnaires measuring anxi…

Quality of life: a case report of bullying in the workplace.

The literature on bullying in the workplace describes the mental and physical ill health suffered by the victims and their families as the consequences of the bullying. The literature also discusses methods of bullying such as overt and covert physical and psychological abuse. The implications are that the consequences of abuse go far beyond the intended target; from impact on the working environment to individuals' health to economic and financial loss. The literature suggests various recommendations to employers and managers to combat bullying at work. However, the common assumption within t…

School Relational Cohesion, Gender-inequitable Attitudes, and Bullying Perpetration Across 15 Education Systems: Less Bullying Overall Without a Weaker Attitude-behavior Link.

Gender-inequitable attitudes are consistently associated with bullying perpetration, yet whether supportive schools weaken the link between those attitudes and behavior, or only lower the overall level of perpetration, remains unclear. Data came from the older cohort of the Survey on Social and Emotional Skills 2023. The analytic sample comprised 47,962 mid-adolescents (49.3% girls, 49.5% boys; M age = 15.76 years, SD = 0.29) in 1,263 schools across 15 education systems, five of them national samples and ten cities or sub-national regions. Two-level structural equation models with site indicat…

The relationship between bullying, learning disorders and psychiatric comorbidity.

BACKGROUND: Both learning disorders and bullying are major sources of public concern. Children with learning disorders often suffer from social rejection, potentially rendering them more susceptible to bullying involvement. Bullying involvement leads to a higher risk towards developing various problems including self-harm and suicidality. Past research on whether learning disorders are childhood bullying risk factors yielded inconsistent results. METHODS: The current study used path analyses on a representative sample of 2,925 German 3rd and 4th grades to examine whether learning disorders ar…
