Endoscopic Olecranon Bursal Resection for Olecranon Bursitis: A Comparative Study for Septic and Aseptic Olecranon Bursitis.

BACKGROUND: Open excision of the olecranon bursa has been performed traditionally. However, surgical complications such as wound healing problems and recurrence may occur after the surgery. The purpose of this study was to report on the clinical outcomes of endoscopic olecranon bursal resection performed in both septic and aseptic olecranon bursitis. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 30 patients who underwent endoscopic olecranon bursal resection from June 2007 to January 2012. There were 20 males and 10 females. The ages ranged from 22 to 80 years, with an average age of 57.4 years and th

Diagnosis and management of olecranon bursitis.

We aim to review the current knowledge on diagnosis, clinical features and main management modalities of olecranon bursitis. We underline that the first treatment line is conservative, including ice, rest, anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs and, occasionally, bursal fluid aspiration. In unresponsive patients, although open excisional procedures allow to completely remove the pathological bursal tissue, arthroscopy is increasingly being considered as a suitable new modality of management. These minimally invasive procedures, although not free from complications, avoid the wound problems ofte

Prevalence of knee bursitis in the workforce.

BACKGROUND: Knee bursitis (KB) is a common disorder in specific occupations requiring frequent and/or sustained kneeling postures. AIMS: To assess the prevalence of KB in the general working population. METHODS: Between 2002 and 2005, a total of 3710 workers of a French region were randomly included in the study. A standardized physical examination of the knee was performed when knee pain was reported by the worker during the preceding 12 months. The criteria for diagnosis of KB were (i) the presence of pain and/or tenderness in the anterior face of the knee at the date of the examination (o

Septic trochanteric bursitis in an adolescent.

Trochanteric bursitis, whether septic or inflammatory in origin, is a condition that affects middle-aged patients. Here we report the rare case of an adolescent with septic trochanteric bursitis (treated successfully with intravenous antibiotics), review the available literature on septic bursitis, illustrate the importance of prompt recognition and treatment of this condition in any age group, and describe the clinical presentation and the radiologic findings.

Tuberculous bursitis of the greater trochanter.

A patient with tuberculous bursitis of the greater trochanter is reported. A 37-year-old woman had experienced persistent dull hip pain and noticed diffuse swelling over the greater trochanteric region. Plain radiograph revealed unremarkable osteopenic changes in the greater trochanter and faint mineralization in the vicinity of the trochanter. Computed tomogram showed erosion of the trochanter and a large soft tissue mass. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a large multicystic mass. Histology of the cyst wall, showing chronic granulomatous tissue, and a positive culture of Mycobacterium

Iliopsoas bursitis and tendinitis. A review.

This review examines the diagnosis and management of iliopsoas bursitis and/or tendinitis. It is a relatively uncommon and unrecognised cause of anterior hip pain and anterior snapping hip. In view of its pathology, iliopsoas bursitis might be better referred to as iliopsoas syndrome. It can usually be diagnosed by history and physical examination, though real time ultrasound may be useful in confirming the diagnosis. Magnetic resonance and computerised tomography imaging have limited roles in its diagnosis, but may identify other pathology or surgical lesions. Nonoperative management has not

An operation for chronic prepatellar bursitis.

An operation for chronic prepatellar bursitis is described in which only the posterior wall of the bursa is excised, thus preserving, undamaged, healthy and normally sensitive skin. This procedure is easier and less traumatic than complete excision of the bursa and results in fewer complications. It is suggested that removal of tha anterior wall of the bursa results in unnecessary and harmful interference with the underlying skin. The operation described gives a good functional and structural result; leaving the anterior wall of the bursa does not predispose to recurrence.

CPPD-Induced Iliopsoas Bursitis Mimicking Pyomyositis.

Calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease may mimic an iliopsoas abscess on imaging. The combined use of polarized light microscopy and 16S rRNA gene analysis can help distinguish crystal-induced inflammation from infection, thereby preventing unnecessary antimicrobial therapy.

Brucella-associated cervical bursitis in cattle.

Bovine brucellosis poses a risk to human health and causes serious economic losses for the animal industry. This report describes the use of different diagnostic methods for the diagnosis of brucellosis in cattle affected by cervical bursitis from a slaughterhouse located in São Luís, Maranhão, Brazil. Serum samples from a total of 47 cattle with bursitis were collected and submitted to the Rose Bengal Test (RBT), and RBT-positive samples were further confirmed by the 2-mercaptoethanol (2-ME) assay. RBT indicated 85.1% (40/47) of positive samples, from which 78.7% (37/47) were confirmed by 2-M

Treatment of trochanteric bursitis: our experience.

[Purpose] Trochanteric bursitis is a disease for which there are no effective standardized therapy protocols. Very often pain persists in spite of applying all therapeutic treatments. The purpose of this study was to determine whether treatment of trochanteric bursitis with a local injection of bicomponent corticosteroid and 2% lidocaine would improve patients' conditions and relieve pain symptoms in the trochanteric area. [Subjects and Methods] A retrospective observational study was conducted of 2,217 patients in a 6 year follow-up period at the Special Hospital "Agens", Mataruska Banja, Ser

Arthroscopic bursectomy for recalcitrant trochanteric bursitis.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this prospective study was to evaluate the arthroscopic treatment of trochanteric bursitis in patients who have not responded to nonoperative treatment. METHODS: Thirty patients were enrolled in this study to evaluate the results of arthroscopic bursectomy. Outcomes were assessed by use of a visual analog pain scale, Harris Hip Score, Short Form 36 Health Survey, and additional specific hip function questions. Patients were given the self-administered outcome questionnaires before surgery and at subsequent follow-up visits. Of the patients, 25 were available for a mean

A case of coexistent acute gout and septic olecranon bursitis is presented. Our hypothesis is that asymptomatic monosodium urate crystals, possibly present in the bursa could secondarily been triggered by the infection.

Gluteal fascial transposition for trochanteric bursitis.

We report a new surgical technique for refractory trochanteric bursitis, performed in 43 patients between May 1988 and December 2003. Fourteen patients had developed trochanteric bursitis after primary total hip arthroplasty (THA), six after revision THA, 17 for no definable reason (idiopathic) and seven after trauma. Follow-up ranged from six months to 15 years (mean five years). Outcome was measured by the patients symptoms at interview and whether the patient would have had the procedure again. Outcome depended on aetiology: 100% of traumatic, 88% of idiopathic and 64% after primary THA wer
