Epidemiology of Pediatric Surgical Conditions Observed in a First-Level Hospital in Burundi.

Background: Little is known about the surgical conditions affecting the pediatric population in low-income countries. In this article we describe the epidemiology of pediatric surgical diseases observed in Mutoyi hospital, a first-level hospital in Burundi. Methods and Findings: We retrospectively reviewed the records of all children (0-14 years) admitted to the Surgery ward from January 2017 to December 2017. We also reviewed the records of all the patients admitted to the Neonatology ward in 2017 and among them we selected the ones in which a surgical diagnosis was present. Five hundred twen

Association of environmental risk factors and trachoma in Gashoho Health District, Burundi.

BACKGROUND: Burundi is currently not meeting targets for elimination of trachoma and trichiasis by 2020 (GET2020). The recommended SAFE strategy (Surgery, antibiotics, face washing and environmental improvement) is currently not fully implemented in many areas of Burundi. The existence of associations between face-washing, sanitation and trachoma prevalence remain undocumented. METHODS: A convenience sample of 468 individuals from 117 households was drawn from attendees at trachoma clinics set up in four villages. Trachoma status, sex and age were recorded for all household members. Adult hou

Epidemic Shigella dysenteriae type 1 in Burundi: panresistance and implications for prevention.

An epidemic of Shigella dysenteriae type 1 infections has affected Africa since 1979. Reported dysentery cases increase sharply in Burundi during September through December. Of stool samples from 189 patients reporting bloody diarrhea in November 1990, a pathogen was identified in 123 (65%). The pathogen was S. dysenteriae type 1 in 82 (67%). All S. dysenteriae type 1 isolates were resistant to ampicillin, chloramphenicol, nalidixic acid, streptomycin, sulfisoxazole, tetracycline, and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. Thirty-two specimens (26%) yielded other Shigella species. Patients with S. dys

Rapid, early and specific diagnosis of tuberculosis and other mycobacterial diseases in Burundi.

The potential usefulness of ELISA based serological tests to assist in rapid, early and specific diagnosis of tuberculosis was investigated. The materials were selected, based on published data and on our preliminary findings. Initially screening tests were performed using crude antigens such as Purified Protein Derivate (PPD) and a BCG-filtrate. Unfortunately, the results with these antigens were not promising. The specificity of both antigens using sera from 94 healthy controls was 64%. As a consequence of these findings, the crude antigens were excluded from further tests, and the study was

[Human arbovirus infections in Burundi: results of a seroepidemiologic survey, 1980-1982].

A serological survey on 623 human sera was conducted in Burundi in 1980-1982, in order to evaluate the frequency of arboviral antibodies in the inhabitants of the three main areas: lowlands, central plateau and mountainous ridge. The results show a rather high activity of arboviruses, mainly in the lowlands (34.2% of inhabitants with antibodies). Chikungunya virus seems to be the most active arbovirus; the activity of Flavivirus is moderate; no trace of activity of yellow fever or West Nile viruses was found; Bunyavirus antibodies (particularly against Ilesha virus) were also detected.

Caesarean sections in rural Burundi: how well are mothers doing two years on?

SETTING: A caesarean section (C-section) is a life-saving emergency intervention. Avoiding pregnancies for at least 24 months after a C-section is important to prevent uterine rupture and maternal death. OBJECTIVES: Two years following an emergency C-section, in rural Burundi, we assessed complications and maternal death during the post-natal period, uptake and compliance with family planning, subsequent pregnancies and their maternal and neonatal outcomes. METHODS: A household survey among women who underwent C-sections. RESULTS: Of 156 women who underwent a C-section, 116 (74%) were trace

Prevalence and associated risk factors assessment of bovine fasciolosis in the Imbo Region, Burundi.

Fasciolosis is a zoonosis that limits the productivity of ruminants worldwide, but there is a lack of information on its occurrence in Burundi. Therefore, this study aimed to fill the information gap by determining the prevalence and risk factors associated with bovine fasciolosis in the Imbo Region of Burundi. Two prevalence studies were conducted in parallel in the five communes of the five provinces in the Imbo region. In the first study, a total of 426 fecal samples were collected from randomly selected cattle farms and microscopically examined to determine Fasciola egg burden. Survey data

Women's contraceptive profiles in Burundi: Knowledge, attitudes, and interactions with media and health services.

Reproductive health program managers seek information about existing and potential clients' motivations, behaviors, and barriers to services. Using sequence and cluster analysis of contraceptive calendar data from the 2016-17 Burundi Demographic and Health Survey, we identified discrete clusters characterizing patterns in women's contraceptive and pregnancy behaviors over the previous 5 years. This study pairs these clusters with data on factors typically targeted in social behavior change interventions: knowledge, attitudes, and women's interactions with media and health services, to create c

Evaluation of effectiveness, acceptability and safety of thermal ablation in the treatment of cervical neoplasia in Burundi.

This longitudinal study aimed at evaluating the effectiveness, acceptability and safety of the thermal ablation procedure (TA) in the treatment of cervical neoplasia. Women referred to the Gynaecology ward for symptoms or for opportunistic screening were assessed by visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) and colposcopy. Those with lesions eligible to ablation were counselled and treated by TA. They were inquired about the level of pain during the procedure, and their level of satisfaction. Patients were followed up at 6 weeks for any complication and reassessed by VIA and colposcopy at 12 mo

Trends in Malaria Cases and Deaths: Assessing National Prevention and Control Progress in Burundi.

BACKGROUND: Malaria is associated with high morbidity and mortality especially in World's tropical regions. In 2016, an estimated 216 million and 445,000 cases of malaria and deaths associated with malaria respectively were reported globally. Malaria is the first leading cause of outpatient visits, hospitalization and death in Burundi. We therefore examined the trend in malaria cases and deaths in Burundi. METHODS: We extracted data from Burundi National Health Information System (BNHIS) and assessed trends in malaria cases and deaths from January 2015 to December 2017. A suspected case of ma

A household survey of dysentery in Burundi: implications for the current pandemic in sub-Saharan Africa.

To characterize the epidemiology of dysentery (defined as bloody diarrhoea) in Burundi, we reviewed national surveillance data and conducted a household cluster survey including two case--control studies: one at the household, the other at the individual level. We estimated that community incidences for dysentery (per 1000 residents) in Kibuye Sector were 15.3 and 27.3, and that dysentery accounted for 6% and 12% of all deaths, in 1991 and 1992, respectively. Factors associated (P < or = 0.05) with contracting dysentery were being female, using a cloth rag after defecation, a history of recent

Determinants of neonatal mortality at Kamenge Teaching Hospital, Burundi: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Despite the implementation of a free healthcare policy for pregnant women and children under five since 2006, neonatal mortality remains high in Burundi. Indeed, twenty-one neonates per 1,000 live births died in 2019. This study aimed to assess neonatal survival and identify factors associated with neonatal mortality in one tertiary hospital of Bujumbura, Burundi. METHODS: We recruited 885 babies whose births occurred between October and December 2020 in Kamenge Teaching Hospital of the University of Burundi and followed them over four months. We applied life table methods and imp

Epidemiological analysis of confirmed mpox cases, Burundi, 3 July to 9 September 2024.

We analysed mpox cases in Burundi from July to September 2024, following the introduction of Clade Ib virus. Of 607 samples from the whole population of suspected cases, 154 were PCR-positive, of whom 85 were children under 15 years, with a higher proportion of female children testing positive. Geographical analysis demonstrates case concentration in Bujumbura Mairie (91/154). Age- and sex-specific interventions, as well as community engagement, are important for outbreak containment, as are targeted public health strategies in Burundi.

Geographic and temporal stability of HIV seroprevalence among pregnant women in Bujumbura, Burundi.

OBJECTIVE: To establish whether HIV seroprevalence in Bujumbura is stable or continuing to increase. METHODS: HIV seroprevalence data among pregnant women from 1986 were compared with comparable data from 1991-1992. RESULTS: HIV seroprevalence among antenatal clinic attendees at three sites was 10.5, 28.0 and 11.9% in 1986, compared with 7.7, 25.6 and 12.4%, respectively, in 1991-1992. A weighted least squares analysis showed significant differences in HIV seroprevalence between the different sites (chi 2, 71.71; P > 0.0001), but no evidence of any differences between the 1986 and the 1991-1

Trauma and physical pain: an urban-rural comparison of sexually abused girls in Burundi.

Background: Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is a significant risk factor for physical and psychological difficulties, especially in (post-)war- and conflict affected regions. Survivors often suffer from both post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and physical pain. Avoidance may contribute to symptom chronification. Yet, in rural areas daily physical obligations may render physical activities unavoidable for survivors. Living conditions post-CSA may play a decisive role in symptom development and chronification. Objective: The aim of this study was to compare PTSD symptom severity and physical pain
