C-reactive protein as a marker of periodontal disease.

Periodontal subgingival pathogens affect local and systemic immune and inflammatory response and cause the release of cytokines; this results in periodontal destruction and initiation of an acute phase systemic inflammatory response characterized by the release of C-reactive proteins (CRP). This study set out to evaluate the serum concentration of CRP that can be used as a marker of periodontal disease as well as a risk indicator for cardiovascular disease. Based on their periodontal status, 45 patients were divided into three groups. The following clinical parameters were recorded: plaque ind

Childhood Bacterial Meningitis and Usefulness of C-reactive Protein.

BACKGROUND: C-reactive protein raises rapidly in the first 24-48 hours of occurrence of bacterial meningitis and in large incremental increases thereafter. This prospective study was undertaken in a tertiary care hospital of Armed Forces to ascertain the usefulness of C-reactive protein in early diagnosis of bacterial meningitis. METHODS: All children admitted during the period of study, with clinical suspicion of meningitis were clinically, biochemically, cytologically and bacteriologically investigated to clinch the diagnosis. Blood and CSF were also sent for C-reactive protein assay by lat

Biomarkers in the critically ill patient: C-reactive protein.

Levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), an acute phase protein, are elevated in many inflammatory conditions and are used to detect and follow disease in many fields of medicine, including rheumatology, gastroenterology, and cardiology. CRP concentrations are also used in critically ill patients, notably because they are increased during the inflammatory response to infection, that is, sepsis. However, CRP is not specific for sepsis, and serum CRP concentrations need to be interpreted in the context of a full clinical examination and the presence of other signs and symptoms of sepsis.

C-reactive protein levels in patients with aggressive periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: Sera from patients with periodontal infections contain elevated levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) compared to periodontally healthy individuals. Most studies to date have included patients with chronic periodontitis, and few investigators have studied CRP levels in subjects with aggressive periodontitis (AgP). The purpose of this study was to determine the relative levels of serum CRP in AgP patients and periodontally healthy subjects and to examine patients' characteristics that might account for intergroup differences. METHODS: Serum samples were collected from 93 patients with

Effect of withdrawal of statin on C-reactive protein.

BACKGROUND: C-reactive protein is considered a risk factor for coronary artery disease. In addition to its lipid-lowering properties, statin decreases the level of C-reactive protein. Abrupt cessation of statin therapy during treatment could increase the incidence of cardiac events in patients with atherosclerotic heart disease. The changes of C-reactive protein after withdrawal of statin therapy are still unknown. METHODS: Twenty patients with hyperlipidemia received statin (atorvastatin, 10 mg/day) therapy for 3 months. The levels of lipid profiles and C-reactive protein were assessed befor

C-reactive protein as a biomarker of emergent osteoarthritis.

OBJECTIVE: We evaluated C-reactive protein (C-RP), a quantitative marker of the acute phase response, as a potential biomarker of prevalent and incident osteoarthritis of the knee (OAK). METHODS: Serum C-reactive protein concentrations were characterized with ultrasensitive rate nephelometry in a population-based sample of 1025 women (318 African-American and 707 Caucasian) who are enrollees in a study of musculoskeletal conditions at the mid-life. Assignment of OAK was based on Kellgren-Lawrence (K-L) scores of 2 or more on radiographs. Prevalent OAK was based on the baseline (1996) score wh

C-Reactive Protein and secondary prevention of coronary events.

Accumulating data suggest that in ischemic syndromes, the activation of the inflammatory process plays a critical role. C-Reactive Protein (CRP) is a useful marker of inflammation in patients with ischemic heart diseases, particularly unstable angina (UA) and acute myocardial infarction. CRP may separate patients into two groups, one with low CRP levels and low in-hospital risk and one with high CRP levels and high in-hospital risk of major coronary events. When considering risk stratification of patients with acute coronary syndromes, the measurement of CRP seems to add further information to

Homocysteine and C-reactive protein levels in haemodialysis patients.

BACKGROUND: Mild to moderate hyperhomocysteinemia is very common among patients undergoing haemodialysis. There is sufficient evidence that hyperhomocysteinemia is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular and or atheromatous disease in end stage renal failure patients. Vitamin supplementation such as vitamin B6, B12 or folate has been proposed to correct this metabolic disturbance and it is to be proved if this intervention benefit these patients, but there is no agreement whether oral folate supplementation is capable to normalize homocysteine levels in end stage renal failure patients.

C-reactive protein (CRP) response patterns in neonatal septicaemia.

C-reactive protein (CRP) is an unreliable diagnostic tool in the early diagnosis of neonatal septicaemia. However, serial measurements have been shown to be useful in monitoring the effectiveness of treatment. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether a specific CRP response pattern to different groups of pathogens could be identified during treatment of neonatal septicaemia. Serial CRP measurements from day 1 to 4 in monomicrobial blood culture-proven episodes of septicaemia were reviewed. In 4416 admissions, 180 out of 206 positive blood cultures were monomicrobial; 121 monomic

Peptides derived from C-reactive protein inhibit neutrophil alveolitis.

C-reactive protein (CRP) is the classic acute phase reactant in humans, with serum levels elevated up to 1000-fold after the onset of inflammation. CRP inhibits chemotaxis of complement (C5a)-, LTB4-, IL-8-, and FMLP-stimulated neutrophils in vitro, and rabbits and transgenic mice with elevated serum CRP levels exhibit diminished neutrophil infiltration and vascular permeability in models of chemotactic factor-induced alveolitis. To evaluate the mechanism of CRP inhibition on chemoattractant-induced neutrophil inflammation in vivo, experiments were performed in mice infused with peptides of hu

Impact of C-reactive protein (CRP) on surfactant function.

Plasma levels of the acute-phase reactant, C-reactive protein (CRP), increase up to one thousand-fold as a result of trauma or inflammation. CRP binds to phosphorylcholine (PC) in a calcium-ion dependent manner. The structural homology between PC and the major phospholipid component of surfactant, dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine (DPPC), led to the present study in which we examined if CRP levels might be increased in patients with adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and subsequently interfere with surfactant function. Our results showed that CRP levels in the bronchoalveolar fluid (BAL

C-reactive protein levels in neutropenic patients with pyrexia.

This study describes the experience of a clinical haematology unit in dealing with pyrexial episodes in 62 patients. Serum C-reactive protein levels were serially estimated and proved to be useful in following the course of the illness. No significant difference could be demonstrated in the C-reactive protein levels of those patients with bacteriologically proven illnesses, those in whom a clinically evident infection was present, and those with a 'pyrexia of unknown origin'. However, those patients in whom disease activity was thought to be responsible for the pyrexia had significantly lower

Rapidity of C-reactive protein in detecting potential septicemia.

Eight episodes of clinical septicemia in five children were assessed using C-reactive protein (CRP) determinations. The measurements were performed turbidimetrically, with quantitative results available in less than 10 minutes. Three patients had epiglottitis, one had recurrent septicemia secondary to severe underlying illnesses and one patient was followed postoperatively after open heart surgery. Regardless of etiology septicemia was consistently associated with a rapid increase (greater than or equal to 20 to 214 mg/liter) in the CRP concentration. Elevated values were obtained 5, 13 and 16

Lymphocytes binding C-reactive protein during acute rheumatic fever.

Lymphocytes binding C-reactive protein (CRP) were studied in 31 patients with acute rheumatic fever and 30 controls who were children. Marked elevations in both proportions and absolute numbers of CRP-binding lymphocytes were recorded in rheumatic fever (P less than 0.001). No clear correlation was noted between plasma CRP as quantitated by radioimmunoassay and proportions or numbers of CRP-binding cells. Double-labeling experiments indicated that 60-80% of CRP-binding lymphocytes also showed Fc receptors reacting with fluorescein-conjugated IgG aggregates. Passage of lymphocytes over Ig--anti

C-reactive protein deficiency ameliorates experimental abdominal aortic aneurysms.

BACKGROUND: C-reactive protein (CRP) levels are elevated in patients with abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA). However, it has not been investigated whether CRP contributes to AAA pathogenesis. METHODS: CRP deficient and wild type (WT) male mice were subjected to AAA induction via transient intra-aortic infusion of porcine pancreatic elastase. AAAs were monitored by in situ measurements of maximal infrarenal aortic external diameters immediately prior to and 14 days following elastase infusion. Key AAA pathologies were assessed by histochemical and immunohistochemical staining procedures. The in

C-reactive protein and ART outcomes: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: A dynamic balance between pro- and anti-inflammatory factors contributes to regulating human female reproduction. Chronic low-grade inflammation has been detected in several female reproductive conditions, from anovulation to embryo implantation failure. C-reactive protein (CRP) is a reliable marker of inflammation that is extensively used in clinical practice. Recent studies quantified CRP in the serum of infertile women undergoing ART and suggested its potential for the prediction of ART reproductive outcomes. OBJECTIVE AND RATIONALE: The first objective of this systematic revie
