[Therapeutic agents for disorders of bone and calcium metabolism: Zoledronic acid].

Intervenous (IV) bisphosphonates are used for cancer patients with hypercalcemia of malignancy (HCM) and breast cancer bone metastases (BM). Recently, zoledronic acid, the most potent third generation bisphosphonate, has been approved for both HCM and BM of broad tumors. It showed 850-fold stronger activity than pamidronate in bone resorption assay, and clinical efficacy against multiple cancer bone lesion has been confirmed in randomized clinical trials. Zoledronic acid becomes one of the most used bisphosphonate for cancer patients in the world, and the results of clinical trials for cancer

Metabolic bone disorders. Imbalances of calcium and phosphorus.

This article describes the physiology of normal calcium and phosphorus metabolism and the influences of various hormonal agents. Clinical variables affecting the interpretation of calcium are explained. In addition, the effects of calcium and phosphorus excess and deficiency are described according to the nursing model. Two metabolic bone disorders, osteoporosis and renal osteodystrophy, are discussed in order to demonstrate the altered metabolic effects of calcium and phosphorus.

[The eye manifestations in phosphorus-calcium metabolic disorders].

The investigation of a number of 286 patients having disorders of binocular seeing shows a very frequent association of these to spasmophilia, especially for persons of feminine sex during their third or fourth decades of life. The medicamentous treatment of spasmophilia has ameliorated the disturbing binocular seeings, which had appeared again after stopping the treatment for a long time. The authors recommend the cover-test end the examination using Maddox's experiment for tracing rapidly out the binocular seeing disturbings. In order to stimulate the movements of the ocular globe in an reve

Disorders of Calcium and Phosphorus Metabolism and the Proteomics/Metabolomics-Based Research.

Since calcium and phosphorus play vital roles in a multitude of physiologic systems, disorders of calcium and phosphorus metabolism always lead to severe consequences such as skeletal-related and cardiovascular morbidity, or even life-threatening. Physiologically, the maintenance of calcium and phosphorus homeostasis is achieved via a variety of concerted actions of hormones such as parathyroid hormone (PTH), vitamin D, and fibroblast growth factor (FGF23), which could be regulated mainly at three organs, the intestine, kidney, and bone. Disruption of any organ or factor might lead to disorder

Disorders of calcium and phosphate metabolism in patients with significant mitral regurgitation.

INTRODUCTION    Although there are several known risk factors of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), the search for new factors continues. In recent years, clinical trials have reported vitamin D and other calcium (Ca) and phosphate (P) metabolism disorders as potential new cardiovascular risk factors, but literature data on this association are limited. OBJECTIVES    We aimed to assess the extent of Ca and P metabolism disorders in patients with mitral regurgitation (MR) and potential role of these disorders as risk factors of CVD. PATIENTS AND METHODS    We enrolled adult patients with significa

[Vestibular function in calcium and phosphate metabolism disorders in chronic renal failure].

45 patients with chronic renal failure (25 dialysed and 20 undialysed) were examined for function of vestibular organ and 35 patients with chronic renal failure treated by diet and drugs were examined for hearing acuity by pure tone audiometry and above-threshold audiometry. All patients serum sample's were examined for calcium, inorganic phosphates and uric acid. The examination revealed the damage of vestibular organ in 84.4 per cent of patients and statistically significant increase of parathormone serum concentration in patients with central type of damage. The hearing loss was found in 51

Clinical disorders of calcium, phosphate, magnesium, and hydrogen ion metabolism: diagnostic approach.

Information concerning normal concentrations of serum calcium, phosphate, magnesium, and hydrogen ion, as well as clinically useful data concerning absorption and excretion of these physiologically important ions, are reviewed. Clinical approaches to diagnosis of these electrolyte disturbances are summarized with special emphasis on interpretations of these disorders in children.

The relationship of biochemical factors related to calcium metabolism with temporomandibular disorders.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between calcium metabolism-related biochemical factors (alkaline phosphatase, vitamin D, parathyroid hormone (PTH), calcium, phosphorus and magnesium), and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disk displacement with reduction (DDWR). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective observational study included patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) (n = 50) and healthy controls (n = 50) of similar age and sex. The diagnosis of TMJ DDWR was made using the diagnostic criteria for temporomandibular joint disorders (DC/TMD). Both group
