Campylobacter enteritis in Nottingham.

The incidence of campylobacter gastroenteritis in the population of Nottingham over a period of 3 years was studied. There was a seasonal variation with the highest number of cases occurring in the summer months. Campylobacter sp. were isolated from the stools of a total of 780 patients over this period. Of these 160 patients with gastroenteritis required admission to hospital. These patients' illness had an acute onset, and the predominant features were diarrhoea, severe abdominal pain, nausea and bright red blood with the stool. However not all the patients had diarrhoea. More than a third o…

[Campylobacter infection in children].

Enteritis by Campylobacter jejuni/coli is by far the most frequent clinical entity of campylobacter-infection. It may be compared to salmonella-enteritis as for its epidemiologic importance. The course of the disease may be dramatic, but can be successfully treated as soon as the pathogen is known. In prematures and newborn babies infections with Campylobacter fetus ssp. fetus are life-threatening and early diagnosis is of life-saving importance. Five observations of campylobacter-enteritis in children aged 2, 8, and 10 years are reported. They were characterized by high fever frequent loose, …

A study of Campylobacter enteritis.

During the years 1978 and 1979, 432 separate outbreaks of gastro-enteritis were reported to this department by the employees of this company. All these outbreaks were fully screened, and it was seen that nineteen employees had gastro-enteritis caused by Campylobacter organisms. Investigation of these employees revealed significant findings with regard to the possible human source of the organism, and leads us to conclude that the organism can be spread by human-to-human contact, and must be treated as a food poisoning organism with subsequent exclusion of food handlers from work during the per…

Myopericarditis following Campylobacter infection.

BACKGROUND: Myopericarditis can be caused by a wide range of infectious agents. There are a few reported cases implicating Campylobacter in the pathogenesis of myopericarditis. CONCLUSIONS: We believe that this case report represents the first documented case in Ireland of myopericarditis associated with Campylobacter enteritis.

Evidence of udder excretion of Campylobacter jejuni as the cause of milk-borne campylobacter outbreak.

We describe a community outbreak of campylobacter enteritis associated with the consumption of untreated milk, apparently contaminated by two cows with campylobacter mastitis. The outbreak occurred in two phases. Strains of Campylobacter jejuni of the Penner serogroup complex 4, 13, 16, 50 and Preston biotype code 6100 were isolated from patients in both episodes and from the faeces of the cattle, milk filters, bulk milk and retail milk. Milk samples from two of 40 milking cows were found to contain C. jejuni, and the wheys from these two cows had high titres of antibody to C. jejuni detected …

Campylobacter jejuni in the stomach.

Campylobacter jejuni is the commonest cause of acute bacterial enteritis in the UK. However, in this case a 74-year-old lady underwent gastroscopy for an upper gastrointestinal haemorrhage and was noted to have a gastric ulcer. Gastric biopsy revealed spiral gram-negative bacteria and culture yielded a moderate growth of C. jejuni. Identification was confirmed by growth characteristics, biochemical tests and PCR amplification of the species-specific flagellin gene--fla A. To prevent misidentification, it is important that laboratories routinely culturing gastric biopsies for Helicobacter pylor…

[Microbiology of Campylobacter pylori].

Campylobacter pylori is a hitherto unknown spiral bacterium. It is implicated in the pathogenesis of chronic antral type B gastritis and also of duodenal and gastric ulcer disease. However, its causal role has not yet been unequivocally established. Taxonomically, C.pylori appears to belong to a genus different from genuine campylobacters, but a precise classification is likewise lacking. The in vitro sensitivity analyses of various antibiotics are complicated by a number of technical difficulties. This is one of the reasons, that results of in vivo eradication trials have to be interpreted wi…

Opsonophagocytosis of Campylobacter pylori.

The opsonic activity of human serum from various sources against Campylobacter pylori was compared. All sera, whether from control subjects with no symptoms of gastritis or peptic ulceration, or from symptomatic patients from whom C. pylori had or had not been isolated, opsonised C. pylori equally well. Opsonisation depended on the alternative pathway of complement activation but not on antibody. These findings suggest that antibody plays no role in protection against C. pylori and that the presence of antibody in patients' sera is mainly of diagnostic value.

Campylobacter fetus Adrenal Abscess.

A 69-year-old highly comorbid female patient presented to the emergency department with sepsis following a month of fevers, myalgias, and lethargy. Abdominal imaging revealed an adrenal abscess, an aspirate of which grew Campylobacter fetus (C. fetus). The patient was treated with meropenem and then azithromycin; however secondary infection of the abscess cavity with an extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli (E. coli) and failure of source control led to an extended clinical course. This case highlights the only documented case of C. fetus adrenal abscess, and a lit…

Campylobacter lari Vertebral Osteomyelitis.

We report a case of Campylobacter lari vertebral osteomyelitis with iliopsoas abscess. This is the first case report of vertebral osteomyelitis due to C. lari, which was identified from a vertebral biopsy sample collected using CT-guided percutaneous needle biopsy in a patient without obvious episodes of immunodeficiency. Cultureing using the HK semisolid medium aided in pathogen ideutification. It is important to make every possible effort to identify the causative pathogen in vertebral osteomyelitis.

Fatal Campylobacter jejuni ileocolitis.

Campylobacter infection usually starts in the jejunum and ileum and progresses distally. The case fatality rate is low and most occur in elderly or patients with comorbidity as in this case. Antibiotics should be used in severe cases or patients at risk. The choices are macrolides and fluoroquinolones. However, in some countries quinolone resistance is increasing, as in Spain. We shouldn´t forget this fact for the proper treatment approach and specifically in refractory cases.
