Canaliculitis: the incidence of long-term epiphora following canaliculotomy.

PURPOSE: To review the long-term outcome following surgical treatment for canaliculitis. METHODS: All cases of canaliculitis treated surgically from January 1995 to December 2001 were identified from theatre records. Case notes were reviewed retrospectively looking specifically for delay in diagnosis (defined as two or more visits prior to diagnosis), culture results and outcome following surgical treatment. Telephonic questionnaires were used to assess the incidence of post-treatment epiphora. Symptomatic patients were offered clinic appointments for further assessment and management. RESUL…

Silicone punctal plug migration resulting in dacryocystitis and canaliculitis.

PURPOSE: One of the modalities of treating dry eyes is punctal plugs. They are usually used for temporary occlusion of the lacrimal drainage system. Among the complications associated with silicone punctal plugs are extrusion, downward migration, irritation, and epiphora. To our knowledge, this is the first report of dacryocystitis and canaliculitis as a result of spontaneous migration of punctal plugs into the lacrimal drainage system. METHODS: We describe the sequelae of spontaneous migration of silicone punctal plugs into the lacrimal drainage system in two patients with dry eyes. RESULTS…

Acute Sterile Canaliculitis: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

A 53-year-old male developed secondary canaliculitis after undergoing nasolacrimal intubation with a silicone stent. Negative cultures, symptoms refractory to antibiotics, and rapid resolution after stent removal suggest an immune reaction as the mechanism of canaliculitis. This case raises awareness of noninfectious hypersensitivity or hypersensitivity-like reactions as a potential acute or subacute complication of nasolacrimal stenting.

Vertical canaliculotomy with retrograde expression of concretions for the treatment of canaliculitis.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of the technique of vertical canaliculotomy with retrograde expression of concretions for the treatment of canaliculitis. METHODS: This is a retrospective, interventional case series. Patients who underwent vertical canaliculotomy by 1 surgeon (D.R.M.) from August 2011 to December 2013 were identified. On initial diagnosis of canaliculitis, all patients were treated with a combination antibiotic/steroid eyedrop and an oral antibiotic. The procedure was performed 1 month later and consisted of a 2-mm vertical canaliculotomy with sharp-tipped scissor…

Isolation of unusual bacteria in canaliculitis: A series of four cases.

With increased availability of sophisticated microbiological techniques for isolation, growth and identification of micro-organisms the spectrum of organisms is rapidly. Herein we report four cases of canaliculitis with unusual organisms and highlight their clinical significance. To the best of our knowledge, there are no reports of isolation of Brucella melitensis and Leuconostoc species reported in English literature; and only one report of isolation of Myroides species from canaliculitis exists. Sphingomonas paucimobilis, is an uncommon isolate in canaliculitis. Extremes of age and occupati…

Infectious keratitis secondary to canaliculitis with concretions: A case report.

RATIONALE: Canaliculitis is a frequently overlooked and misdiagnosed disease. Concurrent corneal ulceration with canaliculitis is uncommon. We report such a case. PATIENT CONCERNS: An 87-year-old woman complained of swelling and pain of the right eye after acute angle closure glaucoma attack. Slit-lamp examination was compatible with the features of infectious keratitis, and the cultures from corneal scrapings grew Streptococcus anginosus later. Hourly topical vancomycin (25 mg/ml) was instilled, then the corneal ulceration improved initially but became stationary after 1-week treatment. DIA…

Lacrimal canaliculitis caused by Fusobacterium periodonticum: A rare clinical encounter.

Lacrimal canaliculitis is an infection of the lacrimal canaliculus, often caused by bacteria, including species of Actinomyces. This report presents a unique instance of lacrimal canaliculitis instigated by the rare periodontal pathogen, Fusobacterium periodonticum, in a 49-year-old female homemaker. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first documented culture-confirmed case report of lacrimal canaliculitis associated with F. periodonticum.

Actinomycetes canaliculitis complicating congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction in an infant.

Actinomyces israelii is a Gram-positive anaerobic organism commonly associated with canaliculitis in adults. Pediatric canaliculitis is relatively rare, especially in infancy. We report the case of an 11-month-old boy who presented with co-existing canaliculitis and congenital nasolacrimal obstruction. The presenting signs included epiphora, discharge, conjunctival congestion, and matting of lashes. On examination, punctual pouting, regurgitation, and yellow canaliculiths were noted. A punctoplasty and canalicular curettage were performed along with nasolacrimal probing. Microbiological tests …

Orbital cellulitis with abscess formation following surgical treatment of canaliculitis.

The authors report a case of orbital cellulitis with abscess formation that developed after surgical management of canaliculitis. The patient developed pain, erythema, proptosis, and limited eye movements 3 days after canalicular debridement. She required urgent drainage of an orbital abscess and was treated with intravenous antibiotics for 2 weeks. Complications from surgical management of canaliculitis are unusual. Clinicians should be aware of the rare but serious risk of spread of the infection to the orbit.

A case report of bacterial canaliculitis caused by Ottowia massiliensis Sp.nov.

BACKGROUND: Ottowia massiliensis sp.nov. is a slow-growing and Gram-stain-negative bacillus, first isolated from the stool sample of a healthy volunteer. Due to its slow growth and challenging cultivation, it is easily overlooked in clinical microbiology laboratories. This case report is the first case of its pathogenicity. CASE PRESENTATION: This case report describes a case of canaliculitis caused by Ottowia massiliensis sp.nov. The patient, an 80-year-old woman, presented with bilateral epiphora and discharge lasting for 4 years, which worsened with redness and swelling over the past week.…
