Concurrent atypical diffused tuberculosis and macrorhabdosis in a canary (Serinus canaria).

A dead canary from a mixed species zoological garden was presented for diagnostic necropsy. Cachexia with prominent atrophy of pectoral muscles, yellowish brown discoloration of the liver and kidney, dark brown to black intestinal contents and moderate proventricular dilatation with some degree of catarrhal gastritis were the significant macroscopic findings. Parenchymatous organs like the liver, the spleen, the lung and the kidneys were extremely affected by massive diffuse necrosis and heavy infiltration of mononuclear inflammatory cells, histopathologically. Many giant bacilli resembling Ma

The link between erectile and cardiovascular health: the canary in the coal mine.

Lifestyle and nutrition have been increasingly recognized as central factors influencing vascular nitric oxide (NO) production and erectile function. This review underscores the importance of NO as the principal mediator influencing cardiovascular health and erectile function. Erectile dysfunction (ED) is associated with smoking, excessive alcohol intake, physical inactivity, abdominal obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and decreased antioxidant defenses, all of which reduce NO production. Better lifestyle choices; physical exercise; improved nutrition and weight control; adequate intake of or s

[Fever of intermediate duration after return from the Canary Islands].

A 35 year old patient presented to the emergency room with high fever, headache and a maculopapular rash after returning from the Canary Islands. Elevated levels of LDH and transaminases and thrombopenia developed during the further hospital course. This presentation is common for an infection with Rickettsia typhi. Therapy with doxycycline is usually effective and should be instituted promptly. The patient's fever remitted 48 h after the first dose. Fever of intermediate duration has been described as a separate disease entity in the Mediterranean region and the Canary Islands. It is defined

High prevalence of asthma symptoms in the Canary Islands: climatic influence?

The worldwide variation in asthma prevalence prompted us to carry out a study to assess the variability of asthma-related symptoms in young … between subjects whose ancestors were of Canarian origin and those with ancestors born outside the Canaries. As has been observed on other islands (Great Britain and New Zealand), asthma is common in individuals from 20 to 44 years of age in the Canaries. We hypothesize that climatic conditions play an important role in the prevalence of asthma symptoms.

[Clinical characteristics and epidemiologic study of a listeriosis outbreak in Grand Canary].

BACKGROUND AND METHODS: Human infections caused by Listeria monocytogenes often present as sporadic cases without any epidemiological relationship among them; however they also appear as outbreaks that are usually detected by an increase in the number of cases diagnosed by hospitals of the geographic area. Between December 1991 and May 1993, twenty four cases of listeriosis were detected in three hospitals of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria; and they were classified as an outbreak. Our report describes its clinical, epidemiological and microbiological aspects. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Twenty four

An outbreak of encephalitis in pigeons (Columba livia) in the Canary Islands (Spain).

An encephalitic disease in pigeons, characterized by paralysis of extremities, torticollis, head tremor, and diarrhea, is described. The negative titers in the hemagglutination tests, the presence of Feulgen-positive intranuclear inclusions in the cells of the granular layer of the cerebellum and the fibroblast culture, and the presence of viral particles with an icosahedral-herpetic morphology and a diameter of 100-170 nm all indicate that the etiology of this outbreak may be related to the encephalitis caused by herpesvirus, at present diagnosed only in Iraq and some African countries.

Detection and molecular characterization of Cryptosporidium spp. in captive canaries (Serinus canaria) using different diagnostic methods.

This study used several diagnostic methods to examine the occurrence of and molecularly characterize Cryptosporidium spp. in captive canaries (Serinus canaria) in southern and southeastern Brazil. A total of 498 fecal samples were purified by centrifugal-flotation using Sheather's solution. Cryptosporidium spp. diagnosis was performed using three diagnostic methods: malachite green negative staining, nested PCR targeting the 18S rRNA gene, followed by sequencing the amplified fragments, and duplex real-time PCR targeting the 18S rRNA specific to detect Cryptosporidium galli and Cryptosporidium…

Differential estrogen accumulation among populations of projection neurons in the higher vocal center of male canaries.

The higher vocal center (HVC) of adult male canaries undergoes a seasonal change in volume that corresponds to seasonal modifications of vocal behavior: HVC is large when birds produce stereotyped song (spring) and is small when birds produce plastic song and add new song syllables into their vocal repertoires (fall). We reported previously that systemic exposure to testosterone (T) produces an increase in the volume of HVC similar to that observed with long-day photoperiods. T-induced growth of HVC occurred regardless of whether the borders of HVC were defined by Nissl-staining, the distribut…

Clinical cases of Cryptosporidium spp. infections in parrots, canaries and pigeons confirmed by molecular and immunochromatographic methods.

INTRODUCTION: Cryptosporidium spp. is a protozoan parasite capable of infecting all vertebrates worldwide. Infections are typically associated with diarrhoea, although cryptosporidiosis can also involve the respiratory tract. Birds are particularly susceptible to the clinical consequences of Cryptosporidium infection, which most commonly include diarrhoea, vomiting, regurgitation, crop inflammation, enterocolitis and poor feather and skin condition. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this study, faecal samples from 52 parrots, 3 canaries and 8 fancy pigeons were examined for the presence of Cryptospori…

West Nile Virus Infection in American Singer Canaries: An Experimental Model in a Highly Susceptible Avian Species.

This study investigated the susceptibility of American singer canaries ( Serinus canaria) to West Nile virus (WNV) infection. Adult canaries were inoculated with 105, 102, and 101 plaque forming units (PFU) of WNV. All birds became infected and mortality occurred by 5 days postinoculation. The load of viral RNA as determined by RT-qPCR was dose dependent, and was higher at all doses than the level of viral RNA detected in American crows ( Corvus brachyrhynchos) challenged with 105 PFU of WNV. In a subset of birds, viremia was detected by virus isolation; canaries inoculated with 101 PFU of WNV…

Fetal Hematopoietic Stem Cells Are the Canaries in the Coal Mine That Portend Later Life Immune Deficiency.

Disorders of the blood system are a significant and growing global health concern and include a spectrum of diseases ranging from aplastic anemia and leukemias to immune suppression. This array of hematological disorders is attributed to the fact that the blood system undergoes a perpetual cycle of turn over with aged and exhausted red and white blood cells undergoing daily replacement. The foundational cells of this replenishment process are comprised of rare hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) located in the bone marrow that possess the dual function of long-term self-renewal and multilineage di

Inverse changes in plasma prolactin and LH concentrations in female canaries after disruption and reinitiation of incubation.

Prolactin and LH concentrations were measured in the plasma of female canaries sampled during the breeding cycle and after disruption and reinitiation of incubation behaviour. The late incubation period was characterized by low LH and high prolactin concentrations, and canaries separated from their nests at this stage showed an increased in LH and a decline in prolactin within 3 h. In one experiment mean (+/- S.E.M.) concentrations before and 24 h after nest deprivation were: prolactin 397 +/- 86 and 18 +/- 5 micrograms/l; LH 1.04 +/- 0.21 and 2.03 +/- 0.17 micrograms/l. Female canaries which …

Haemophilus influenzae in the airways: canary in the coal mine or driver of disease?

INTRODUCTION: Overgrowth and colonization by non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) is a common feature of increasing disease severity, treatment resistance and increased susceptibility to disease exacerbations across chronic airways diseases (CADs). Whether NTHi is a driver of respiratory disease or reflects that the damaged airway has become a permissive environment for growth remains to be proven. AREAS COVERED: In this review, we discuss the potential roles of hypermutation, biofilm formation and intracellular living in allowing NTHi to adapt to living in the lungs of individuals with

Three decades of perinatal HIV management in the Canary Islands, Spain.

UNLABELLED: Perinatal transmission (PT) of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has decreased drastically in developed countries, but it still occurs with an incidence of around 1-2%. Our objective was to assess the PT of HIV in the Canary Island, Spain. We conducted a multicenter retrospective study from 1993 to 2021 involving pregnant women with HIV and their children attended in Las Palmas. Data on pregnancy, delivery, treatment, and outcomes were collected and divided into three periods: period 1 (P1) 1993-2003, period 2 (P2) 2004-2012, and period 3 (P3) 2013-2021. A total of 259 mother-chil

Tobacco Consumption and Mental Health in the Canary Islands: A Quantitative Analysis.

Although the detrimental health effects of tobacco, there has been scant research into determining comprehensive profiles to characterize individuals with a higher risk of smoking. This paper identifies such profiles and probabilistically quantifies the effects of certain traits on the decision to smoke in the Canary Islands. This characterization is approached from a broad and novel point of view for the region studied, given that the analysis not only studies sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyle and health, but also incorporates mental health. The results show that suffering from some

Canary in the Coal Mine? Male Infertility as a Marker of Overall Health.

Male factor infertility is a common problem. Evidence is emerging regarding the spectrum of systemic disease and illness harbored by infertile men who otherwise appear healthy. In this review, we present evidence that infertile men have poor overall health and increased morbidity and mortality, increased rates of both genitourinary and non-genitourinary malignancy, and greater risks of systemic disease. The review also highlights numerous genetic conditions associated with male infertility as well as emerging translational evidence of genitourinary birth defects and their impact on male infert
