Pathology of growth anomalies in massive Caribbean corals of the family Faviidae.

Growth anomalies (GAs) are a morphologically diverse and poorly understood group of lesions affecting corals. The aim of this study was to describe the prevalence and morphology of GAs affecting the faviid corals Diploria labyrinthiformis, Pseudodiploria strigosa, Psudodiploria clivosa, and Colpophyillia natans on St. Kitts. Three gross morphological variants of GAs (exophytic, nodular, and ruminate) were equally prevalent, together affecting 7.8% of corals surveyed across 5 reefs. Prevalence varied by reef and coral species, being highest in C. natans (35.7%). Median colony diameter was large

Convergent Total Synthesis of Caribbean Ciguatoxin C-CTX1 and Its C3-Epimer.

Caribbean ciguatoxin C-CTX1 is a highly potent ladder-shaped polycyclic ether toxin responsible for ciguatera fish poisoning and has recently been detected beyond the Caribbean Sea region. Because of its extreme structural complexity and scarcity from natural sources, its structure and biological properties have not been fully validated by chemical means. We report here the first total synthesis of C-CTX1 and its naturally occurring C3-epimer through a convergent fragment-coupling strategy joining the ABCDE- and HIJKLMN-ring units, featuring late-stage radical cyclization and ring-closing meta

Spatial variability in distribution and prevalence of Caribbean scleractinian coral and octocoral diseases. I. Community-level analysis.

Geographic assessments of coral diseases are needed to understand their local and geographic spatial-temporal variability. Coral and octocoral diseases and their prevalence were assessed along 4 permanent 10 x 2 m band-transects in each of 3 depth habitats (<4, 5-12 and >15 m) in each of 2 reefs in each of 6 countries across the wider Caribbean during the summer and fall of 2005. A permutational multivariate analysis of variance was used to test variability of major diseases and community level disease prevalence in corals and octocorals among habitats, reefs and countries. The most common and

Spatial variability in distribution and prevalence of Caribbean scleractinian coral and octocoral diseases. II. Genera-level analysis.

Geographic assessments of coral/octocoral diseases affecting major reef-building genera and abundant reef species are important to understand their local and geographic spatial-temporal variability and their impact. The status and spatial variability of major Caribbean coral/octocoral diseases affecting important reef-building coral (Montastraea, Diploria, Siderastrea, Stephanocoenia, Porites, and Agaricia) and common, widespread octocoral genera (Gorgonia and Pseudopterogorgia) was assessed along 4 permanent 10 x 2 m band-transects in each of 3 depth habitats (<4, 5-12 and >15 m) on 2 reefs i

Convergent and Scalable Second-Generation Synthesis of the Fully Functionalized HIJKLMN-Ring Segment of Caribbean Ciguatoxin C-CTX-1.

A highly convergent and scalable second-generation synthesis of the fully functionalized HIJKLMN-ring segment of Caribbean ciguatoxin C-CTX-1, the primary toxin responsible for ciguatera fish poisoning in the Caribbean Sea and the Northeast Atlantic regions, has been accomplished. Key aspects of the synthetic approach include the efficient syntheses of the HI- and KLM-ring fragments on gram scales, a convergent fragment coupling toward the HIJKLM-ring skeleton based on the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling strategy, and optimized iron hydride-catalyzed hydrogen atom transfer-mediated olefin coupling con

Periodontal disease and its impact on general health in Latin America - Diagnosis: Latin America and the Caribbean Consensus 2024.

This is a new version of the LAOHA Consensus on Periodontal Disease and its impact on general health in Latin America. Five years after the first version, knowledge has increased, and diagnosis of periodontal disease has evolved. Of especial interest relative to this topic has been the emergence of studies that have used the AAP/EFP Classification of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Diseases and Conditions since it is the core (?)of the art of diagnosis in preventive and therapeutic strategies. To make an accurate and effective diagnosis, knowledge about the health-disease process is fundamental.

A combined diagnostic approach for the investigation of lesions resembling aspergillosis in Caribbean sea fans (Gorgonia spp.).

Aspergillosis of gorgonian sea fans is a Caribbean-wide disease characterized by focal, annular purple pigmentation with central tissue loss. We applied a holistic diagnostic approach including histopathology and a combination of culture and direct molecular identification of fungi to evaluate these lesions with the goal of determining the diversity of associated micro-organisms and pathology. Biopsies were collected from 14 sea fans without gross lesions and 44 sea fans with lesions grossly consistent with aspergillosis in shallow fringing reefs of St. Kitts. Histologically, the tissue loss m

Considerations for maximizing the adaptive potential of restored coral populations in the western Atlantic.

Active coral restoration typically involves two interventions: crossing gametes to facilitate sexual larval propagation; and fragmenting, growing, and outplanting adult colonies to enhance asexual propagation. From an evolutionary perspective, the goal of these efforts is to establish self-sustaining, sexually reproducing coral populations that have sufficient genetic and phenotypic variation to adapt to changing environments. Here, we provide concrete guidelines to help restoration practitioners meet this goal for most Caribbean species of interest. To enable the persistence of coral populati

Pathology and reproductive health of queen conch (Lobatus gigas) in St. Kitts.

Queen conch, Lobatus gigas, are one of the largest commercial fisheries in the Caribbean and are severely depleted due to overharvesting. Dwindling and fragmented populations are at high risk to stochastic events such as disease epidemics; however, there is a paucity of literature regarding queen conch disease. A histopathological survey was conducted to assess the disease status of St. Kitts' queen conch populations, and contribute to the little information known about L. gigas pathology. Using a standard dissection and sampling protocol, pathology status was assessed in 61 L. gigas sampled o

Surveillance of avian influenza in the Caribbean through the Caribbean Animal Health Network: surveillance tools and epidemiologic studies.

The Caribbean region is considered to be at risk for avian influenza (AI) due to a large backyard poultry system, an important commercial poultry production system, the presence of migratory birds, and disparities in the surveillance systems. The Caribbean Animal Health Network (CaribVET) has developed tools to implement AI surveillance in the region with the goals to have 1) a regionally harmonized surveillance protocol and specific web pages for AI surveillance on www.caribvet.net, and 2) an active and passive surveillance for AI in domestic and wild birds. A diagnostic network for the Carib…

A proposal of good manufacturing practices (GMP) laboratory for CAR T-cell therapy in Latin America and the Caribbean: challenges and opportunities.

Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy is a transformative modality for refractory hematologic malignancies; however, its adoption in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) is severely constrained by prohibitive manufacturing costs, limited specialized infrastructure, and fragmented regulatory frameworks. To address this translational gap, we propose a pragmatic, cost-adapted model for establishing Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) laboratories tailored to the socioeconomic realities of LAC. This model advocates for decentralized, modular cleanroom facilities that integrate fully closed

Estimating the burden of leptospirosis in the Caribbean: Insights from environmental and sociodemographic factors.

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies up to early 2000s found that leptospirosis incidence in humans was high across the Caribbean region (CR), yet up-to-date and reliable surveillance data are scarce. Limited research capacity in the region has further contributed to less robust characterisation of transmission drivers, perpetuating a cycle of neglect. To address these gaps and support evidence-based public health responses, this study aims to update incidence estimates in the CR by integrating data from multiple data sources, including peer-reviewed publications, surveillance reports and environmen…
