[Carrier-state of group B streptococcus in pregnant women--performance standards].

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is a gram-negative bacteria, which is the most frequent cause of invasive neonatal infection. About 10-30% of pregnant woman are carriers of GBS. GBS infection is transmitted to neonates from colonized vagina. Children of those mothers have 25 times higher risk of early onset neonatal sepsis then of those not colonized. Colonization can be transient, intermittent or persistent that is why ano-vaginal swabs are taken between 35 to 37 gestation week. This is a primary way of defining a risk of neonatal GBS infection. Before the labor additional risk factors are determ

[Adaptation mechanisms in the formation of the Corynebacterium diphtheriae carrier state].

The complex clinico-laboratory examination of 92 children aged 3-14 years with the localized form of stomatopharyngeal diphtheria and toxigenic C. diphtheriae (TCD) carrier state was carried out. The children were hospitalized in the clinic of drop infections during the period of 1996-1998. The hydrophobic properties, adhesive, lysozyme, antilysozyme and DNAase activities of 92 TCD strains, as well as the levels of the specific and nonspecific immunity of the macroorganism, were studied. The study revealed that the character of the infectious process in TCD carrier state was determined by the …

Homozygous beta-thalassaemia resulting in the beta-thalassaemia carrier state phenotype.

This paper describes the phenotypic manifestations of a very mild beta-thalassaemia mutation detected in several members of two families of Italian descent. The molecular defect, defined by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis analysis and direct sequencing, consists of a C-->G substitution at position 844 of IVSII of the beta-globin gene within the consensus sequence of the IVSII acceptor splice site. Heterozygotes for this mutation show a haematological phenotype ranging in severity from silent beta-thalassaemia to that of a mild beta-thalassaemia carrier state, whereas homozygotes have t…

Lowe's oculocerebrorenal syndrome--variation in lens changes in the carrier state.

The lens changes in DNA based analysis compatible carriers of the gene of Lowe's syndrome in one family are described. The lens changes consist of a large amount of characteristic punctate cortical opacities. In two of the three carriers, formed lens opacities were found, appearing like congenital riders. In one lens containing congenital-like riders a posterior subcapsular cataract had developed. In comparison with a previously examined family, the lens changes in the present family were overall much more extensive. It appears there is a variation in expressivity of the gene in carriers of di

Pathogenesis of diphtheria carrier state from the immunological point of view.

Results of a comparative investigation of diphtheria antitoxin and type-specific antibacterial antibodes in 264 carriers of diphtherial bacteria, 41 diphtheria patients and 263 non-infected subjects are presented. A high level of antitoxin did not prevent the development of toxigenic-strain carrier state. A basically similar immunological antibacterial response was observed in patients with manifest forms of diphtheria and in carriers of toxigenic strains; such a response could not as yet be detected in carriers of non-toxigenic strains. It has been suggested that the infectious process in the…

The diagnosis of the carrier state for the Lesch--Nyhan syndrome.

Skin biopsies from the mother of a classical case of the Lesch-Nyhan syndrome grew only wild type fibroblasts. This suggested that she is not a heterozygous carrier of the mutant X-linked structural gene which causes the syndrome, and that a fresh mutation caused the disorder in her son. Evidence of mosaicism was sought in skin fibroblasts, hair follicles, jejunal mucosa, cultured bone marrow cells and phytohaemagglutinin (PHA) stimulated lymphocytes from known hemizygotes and heterozygotes for the so-called complete, and partial deficiencies of hypoxanthine guanine phosphoribosyltransferase (
