Child Sexual Grooming of Catholic Clergy: A Comparison between Victims Allegedly Abused by Clergy with Single versus Multiple Victims.

There is evidence that clergy who commit child sexual abuse (CSA) may utilize sexual grooming behaviors in the offense process consistent with a content-validated model (Sexual Grooming Model; SGM). Although research has examined differences in characteristics between clergy with single versus multiple CSA victims, little is known about how sexual grooming behaviors may vary between these groups. The present study utilized a large sample of alleged clergy sexual abuse incidents (n = 10,667) to examine the differences in reported sexual grooming behaviors for victims who experienced abuse by an

Polish Catholics Attribute Trauma-related Symptoms to Possession: Qualitative Analysis of Two Childhood Sexual Abuse Survivors.

In many cultures, people use the concept of spirit possession to explain abrupt changes in behavior and identity or problems with affect regulation. High incidence of traumatic experiences are also found among "possession" victims but there are few studies exploring in detail their clinical presentations. This study reports the symptoms of two women with a history of sexual abuse, labeled in their religious communities as possessed, and subjected to exorcisms. Following a thorough clinical assessment, interpretative phenomenological analysis was used to explore their meaning-making and help-se

Clergy-perpetrated sexual abuse of minors - case study.

OBJECTIVES: The main objective of the study was not only to show the scale of child sexual abuse by clergy itself, but rather presentation of the manner in which perpetrators act and what their motivations are. For the purpose of the study the authors prepared a survey which included information pertaining to the circumstances of the abuse, the abuser, the aggrieved person, as well as legal and non-legal consequences (sanctions). A Revised Moral Appraisal of Early Induction of Labor in Cases of Anencephaly.

The central concern of this article is whether early induction of labor for an anencephalic fetus can ever be morally justified, particularly by a Catholic healthcare ethics committee. By revisiting and refining arguments in articles by Drane (1992) and Bole (1992) published in this journal, a revised argument - consistent with the Catholic moral tradition - can seemingly be constructed that a Catholic healthcare ethics committee might use to justify early induction of labor in some pregnancies involving an anencephalic fetus. Such a revised argument depends upon two central claims; first, tha

[Sexual Abuse of Minors in the Area of Responsibility of the Catholic Church: Institutional Specifics].

INTRODUCTION: From 2014 to 2018, an interdisciplinary consortium of scientists investigated the extent and possible causes of the sexual abuse of children in the area of responsibility of the Catholic Church in Germany. The study bears the acronym MHG (Mannheim / Heidelberg/Gießen) after the locations of the participating universities. The personnel file analysis identified 1670 Catholic clerics accused of sexual abuse of minors for the period from 1946 to 2014. For the Catholic Church specific conditions that favour the sexual abuse of minors could be identified. METHOD: A comparison of crim

Sexual abuse of minors within the Catholic Church and other institutions : A literature review.

Sexual violence against children remains a global public health problem. The health sector has an opportunity and responsibility to be part of the multisector collaboration to prevent and respond to sexual abuse of minors. The following article presents a critical analysis of hitherto published empirical studies that examine the extent and variety of sexual abuse of minors within the Catholic Church and other institutions. The analysis consists of 40 studies concerning the Catholic Church and 13 studies concerning other institutions not belonging to the Catholic Church. We report the character

[Science and medicine in 18th Century Luxembourg].

During the 18th century science and medicine are poorly developed in Luxembourg (present part of the former duchy). Leprosy is vanishing and black death belongs to the past, whereas dysentery, typhoid fever and other epidemical diseases are thriving. In some specific diseases people claim help from protective saints such as St. Hubert (rabies) and St. Willibrord or the Blessed Virgin Mary. Besides these aspects the paper gives a concise outline of the situation in Luxembourg during the 18th century concerning hospitals, physicians, pharmacists and popular medicine.

Blinded by bad identity: The role of collective narcissism, need for cognitive closure and willful ignorance in fostering intergroup bias and hostility among Catholics and atheists.

This article proposes a theoretical model linking collective narcissism, need for cognitive closure, and willful ignorance as important mechanisms driving intergroup bias and conspiracy beliefs. The model suggests that individuals strongly identified with their group in a narcissistic way are motivated to avoid information threatening ingroup image, especially when they also seek cognitive certainty. This deliberate ignorance serves to protect group image and reinforce prejudice. The framework applies symmetrically to both religious (Catholics) and non-religious (atheists) groups, highlighting

An Exploratory Study on Mental Health, Social Problems and Spiritual Damage in Victims of Child Sexual Abuse by Catholic Clergy and Other Perpetrators.

The Catholic Church has faced a large number of complaints against its representatives for sexual crimes that involved children and adolescents as victims. The objective of this study was to characterize the dynamics of this type of event, its characteristics, and its effects in terms of mental health and social consequences, as well as the spiritual damage generated. The sample comprised 182 victims from Spain and Chile, divided into three mutually exclusive groups (n = 40 committed by a representative of the Catholic Church; n = 85 by a family member; n = 57 by a perpetrator outside the fami

Disease versus disease: Paolo Zacchia on syphilis and epilepsy.

The lawyer and physician Paolo Zacchia (1584-1659) was the chief physician at the Vatican and an important advisor to the papal court. He is considered a founder of the field of forensic pathology, and the influence of his masterwork, Quaestiones medico-legales, spread throughout Europe. In this essay, we focus on one of Zacchia's consultations, first published posthumously in 1661. Emerging from a cause for beatification, the case features the intriguing medical notion of one disease curing another. Zacchia was to determine if a young man's recovery from epilepsy was miraculous or not. We wil

Prostate cancer mortality among Catholic priests.

To investigate the possible role of celibate lifestyles in the etiology of prostate cancer, analyses of mortality from cancers of the prostate and other sites among an average annual cohort of 6,226 Roman Catholic clergymen in New York State from 1965 through 1977 were conducted. The death certificates of 1006 (95%) priests were reviewed. Of these 156 deaths were attributable to malignant neoplasms. Clerics experienced mortality ratios of 15% less for all causes of death and 30% less for cancer mortality, given mortality patterns among New York State white males of comparable ages. Twelve deat
