[Sixteen Cases of Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasm].

Appendiceal mucinous neoplasm is a relatively rare disease. It is classified as mucinous adenocarcinoma(MACA)and low- grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm(LAMN). We retrospectively evaluated 16 cases of appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN: 13 cases, MACA: 3 cases)that were surgically resected in our hospital between January 2010 and July 2021. There were 7 men and 9 women, with a median age of 61 years(27-85 years). The most common chief complaint was abdominal pain(12 patients), while 3 cases were incidental findings following medical checkups for other diseases and without a chief complaint.

The role of advanced endoscopy in appendiceal polyp management and outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Appendiceal orifice lesions are often managed operatively with limited or oncologic resections. The aim is to report the management of appendiceal orifice mucosal neoplasms using advanced endoscopic interventions. METHODS: Patients with appendiceal orifice mucosal neoplasms who underwent advanced endoscopic resections between 2011 and 2021 with either endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), endoscopic mucosal dissection (ESD), hybrid ESD, or combined endoscopic laparoscopic surgery (CELS) were included from a prospectively collected dataset. Patient and lesion details and procedure ou

Aggressive appendiceal malignancies mimicking primary colonic tumors: two cases with extramural invasion and atypical clinical presentation.

Appendiceal malignant neoplasms typically present as acute appendicitis. However, certain histological subtypes exhibit highly aggressive biological behavior and may manifest with atypical clinical features, posing significant diagnostic challenges. We report two cases of aggressive appendiceal malignancies characterized by extramural invasion into the distal colon and misleading preoperative presentations. Case 1 involved a 74-year-old woman presenting with progressive weight loss and a palpable right lower quadrant mass without appendicitis-related symptoms. Imaging demonstrated extensive wa

From the archives of MD Anderson Cancer Center: Sporadic Burkitt lymphoma with a complex karyotype and SOX11 expression.

Burkitt lymphoma (BL) is a mature B-cell neoplasm arising from germinal center B-cells. There are three epidemiological variants of which the sporadic variant is most prevalent in developed countries representing 1-2 % of all lymphomas in adults. Patients usually present with bulky abdominal masses and ~ 30 % have bone marrow involvement. BL is characterized by a germinal center B-cell immunophenotype and usually has a simple karyotype. Here we report an unusual case of sporadic BL in a 44-year-old man and we use this case to review sporadic BL in adults. The patient presented with a cecal mas

Abundance of Tumor-Infiltrating B Cells in Human Epithelial Malignancies.

Cancer is a major global health problem. The type of malignant neoplasm and the potency of the immune response against tumors are two of the key factors influencing the outcome of the disease. The degree of tumor infiltration by lymphocytes plays an important role in antitumor response development, generally correlating with a favorable prognosis of treatment for certain cancers. We analyzed the abundance of tumor-infiltrating B cells (TIBs) in solid tumors of different cancers. TIBs were shown to be more abundant in colon and sigmoid colon cancer samples compared with cecal, rectal, and kidne

An unusual presentation of colon cancer in a young individual.

Intussusception occurs rarely in adults. It presents with a variety of acute, intermittent, and chronic symptoms, thus making its preoperative diagnosis difficult. CT scan of the abdomen and pelvis usually reveals the diagnosis of intussusception in adults. Surgical resection of the intussusception without reduction is the preferred treatment in adults, as almost half of both colonic and enteric intussusceptions are associated with malignancy. However, the choice and timing of operation will depend on the clinical condition of the patient and the status of the invaginating tumor. Colon cancer

Intussusception in the adult--a rare disease.

We present two cases of intussusception in the adult. Both cases were secondary to a benign lipoma as the lead point. These cases represent typical cases of adult intussusception, a rare disease characterized by insidious onset, vague abdominal symptoms, and elusive diagnosis. A diagnostic and therapeutic approach to adult intussusception is suggested. The need to consider this rare entity in the differential diagnosis of chronic abdominal complaints in the adult is emphasized.

Case of Appendiceal Goblet Cell Adenocarcinoma With Gastric Metastasis.

Goblet cell adenocarcinoma (GCA) is a rare appendiceal neoplasm that typically metastasizes to the peritoneum and pelvic organs, with no reported gastric involvement. We report a 72-year-old man with multiple comorbidities presenting with recurrent small bowel obstruction. Imaging revealed a cecal and a gastric mass; colonoscopy confirmed poorly differentiated right-sided adenocarcinoma. Surgical resection with intraoperative biopsies identified high-grade appendiceal GCA infiltrating the cecum, mesentery, and gastric wall. Immunohistochemical staining showed cytokeratin 7 negativity and cytok

"Twist & slide" bowel obstruction: two different rare causes of adult bowel obstruction in the same patient.

A man, age 68, presented with two rare clinical entities of adult bowel obstruction. This case showed a caecocolic intussusception (due to a caecal malignant lesion) with a small bowel volvulus secondarily. These are rare but potential life-threatening surgical emergencies.

[A case of ileocecocolic intussusception from cecal carcinoma].

The authors present a case of ileocecocolic intussusception by carcinoma of the caecum. They stress the most peculiar aspects of this condition: rare etiology; complete invagination of caecum appendix and ileum; typical clinical presentation characterized by variable dimensions of the mass and symptoms not ascribing to occlusion, no lesions at endoscopy; evidence of a typical "target mass" visualized at T.C.

Burkitt's lymphoma protruding through the anus. Report of an unusual case.

A four-year-old boy had a cecoanal intussusception prolapsing through the anus. A 4 x 4 cm cecal tumor served as the leading point of the intussusception. Laparotomy and histology revealed that the tumor was a solitary Burkitt's lymphoma of the cecum. Isolated Burkitt's lymphoma, as presented here, is rare, and such a combination has never been reported. Intussusception prolapsing through the anus and Burkitt's lymphoma are discussed, as well as a possible reason for the rarity of the condition.

Nodular typhlitis associated with the nematodes Heterakis gallinarum and Heterakis isolonche in pheasants: frequency and pathology with evidence of neoplasia.

An investigation related to the frequency and pathology of Heterakis gallinarum and pathology of Heterakis isolonche in pheasants from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil was conducted by means of clinical examinations, necropsies, and histopathological analysis in 50 ring-necked pheasants from backyard flocks of 11 localities; also, histological sections of caeca of golden pheasants deposited in the Helminthological Collection of the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (CHIOC) have been considered in the present study. During necropsies, only specimens of H. gallinarum were recovered with a prevalence of 90%, mean int

Mesenteric origin hyalinized vascular pseudotumor mimicking duplicate acute appendicitis.

Appendiceal duplication is an exceptionally rare anomaly, with an incidence ranging from 0.004% to 0.009%. Most cases are asymptomatic and remain undetected on imaging, with diagnosis usually established incidentally during laparotomy performed for other intra-abdominal conditions. The differential diagnosis includes cecal diverticulum, mesenteric adenitis, epiploic appendagitis, and neoplasms of the colon or appendix. We report the case of a 22-year-old man whose preoperative findings and intraoperative appearance suggested appendiceal duplication. Histopathological examination, however, demo

Early post-transplant smooth muscle neoplasia of the colon presenting as diminutive polyps: a case complicating post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder.

A 44-year-old woman, 3 years post-transplant for pulmonary sarcoidosis, developed abdominal pain and diarrhea 13 months subsequent to an eradicated diffuse large B-cell-type, post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD) of the cecal region. Endoscopic examination identified multiple pale tan 5-to-9 mm rubbery nodules of the transverse and right colon in an otherwise unremarkable mucosa. Histology was characterized by bland smooth muscle proliferations, focally pushing into the mucosa. Immunohistochemistry (IHC), in situ hybridization (ISH), and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of the sam

Impact of the barium enema on patient management.

The medical records of 214 consecutive inpatients who had a barium enema examination were reviewed, and the clinical indications, efficacy of the barium enema, and patient outcome were correlated to determine the impact of the barium enema on patient management. The most frequent indications were rectal bleeding (33%), abdominal pain (31%), anemia (17%), weight loss (12%), and previous lesions needing reevaluation (12%). Diverticular disease (30%), colonic polyps (10%), and primary or secondary malignancies (12%) were the most common abnormalities detected radiographically. The sensitivity of

Medical-legal risks of incident cancers after clearing colonoscopy.

Colonoscopy and polypectomy effectively reduce the incidence and mortality of colorectal cancer, but some patients present with fully developed cancers within 1-4 yr of a colonoscopy that apparently cleared the colon of neoplasia. These events may result in medical-legal action against colonoscopists, generally based on an assumption of negligent technical performance of the procedure. Alternative explanations for the development of interval cancers include variable growth rates of colorectal cancers, the inherent miss rate of the procedure even when optimal examination techniques are used, an
