[Quantitative assessment of aqueous flare intensity and cell count in uveitis].

In an attempt to evaluate the validity of the laser flare-cell meter in in iridocyclitis, we conducted a comparative study of slit-lamp examination and flare-cell meter measurements in 251 eyes of uveitis patients. A significant correlation was observed between the two methods both in the measurement of flare intensity (Kendall tau = 0.580, p less than 0.001) and cell count (tau = 0.390, p less than 0.001). However, there were wide variations in grading within groups and large overlaps in scores between groups. These results were thought to be attributable to differences in the two examination…

Use of different somatic cell count cut-points to define intramammary infection at drying off in dairy cows from a herd with a high somatic cell count.

Aims: To assess the use of different cut-points based on individual cow somatic cell counts (SCC) to define cows with intramammary infection (IMI) at drying-of, in a herd with a high mean bulk tank SCC. Methods: Results for SCC from four herd tests during lactation and bacterial culture of milk samples collected before drying-off were obtained for 139 cows from a herd with an average bulk milk SCC of >300,000 cells/mL over the final 4 months of the 2006/07 lactation. Based on culture results, cows were defined as being infected with a major (Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus uberis or Nocar…

Prognostic value of S-phase white blood cell count in B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

Eighty previously untreated patients with B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia (B-CLL) were analyzed to study the proliferation rate of their peripheral blood (PB) leukocytes to determine its relationship with the extension of the disease and its value in discriminating among patients with similar tumor cell mass. The 80 B-CLL patients were distributed into two different groups according to the absolute count of PB S-phase leukocytes: a low proliferative group (less than 1 x 10(9)/I) of 48 patients and a high proliferative group (greater than or equal to 1 x 10(9)/I) of 32 patients. The high pr

Consistency where it counts: Sleep regularity is associated with circulating white blood cell count in young adults.

BACKGROUND: Sleep irregularity is predictive of poor health outcomes, and particularly those of cardiometabolic origins. The immune system is implicated in the pathogenesis of cardiometabolic diseases, however the relation between sleep regularity and immune cell profile is unclear. METHODS AND RESULTS: Forty-two healthy young adults (20 ± 2 years) completed 14 days of 24-h wrist actigraphy followed by a morning blood sample to evaluate circulating white blood cells (WBC) and subtypes (neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes). Sleep regularity was operationalized as the standard deviation (SD)

Optimizing retinal ganglion cell nuclear staining for automated cell counting.

The retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) serve as the critical pathway for transmitting visual information from the retina to the brain, yet they can be dramatically impacted by diseases such as glaucoma. When investigating disease processes affecting RGCs in mouse models, accurately quantifying affected cells becomes essential. However, the use of pan RGC markers like RBPMS or THY1 presents challenges in accurate total cell counting. While Brn3a serves as a reliable RGC nuclear marker for automated counting, it fails to encompass all RGC subtypes in mice. To address this limitation and enable precis…

Long-term use of rituximab increases T cell count in MS patients.

Rituximab has been used to treat MS patients in Iceland for over a decade. However, long-term effect of rituximab on leukocyte populations h … itial dose of rituximab when compared to 1000mg. Long-term use of rituximab led to an increase in T cell count (p=0,0015) in patients receiving 3-8 doses of rituximab (1.5-8 years of treatment). The increase occurred in both CD4+ (p=0,0028) and CD8+ T cells (p=0,0015) and led to a decrease in the CD4/CD8 ratio (p=0,004). The most notable difference lies in r …

Complete Blood Cell Count-Derived Inflammation Biomarkers in Patients with Xanthelasma Palpebrarum.

OBJECTIVES: Xanthelasma palpebrarum (XP) is the most common type of cutaneous xanthoma, characterized by yellowish cutaneous plaques commonly located near the medial canthus of the eyelid. Although dyslipidemia significantly contributes to its development, inflammation is also believed to be another element in the pathogenesis, especially in normolipidemic patients. Recently, cell counts derived from complete blood counts have been identified as indicators of systemic inflammatory conditions and have also been under discussion concerning their relevance to ocular diseases. This study aimed to …

Impact of Abnormal Leukocyte Count in the Pathophysiology of Sickle Cell Anemia.

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a hereditary disease that causes deoxygenated erythrocytes to stiffen, resulting in vaso-occlusive crises, endothelial damage, organ failure and systemic consequences. An abnormal leukocyte count is associated with a worse clinical picture in SCD. METHODS: I studied the link between an abnormal leukocyte count and sickle cell disease. I used the PRISMA guidelines to conduct a systematic review of 5 different clinical literatures that discussed the link. Use of databases including Web of Science, Scopus, Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, ScienceDirect, EMBASE,

Elevated Eosinophil Count Following Pembrolizumab Treatment for Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer.

Immune-related adverse events (IRAEs) are a common yet problematic phenomenon in patients who are treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs). Current research efforts have explored the exact pathophysiology of IRAEs in the clinical setting. However, a rare subset of IRAEs that is less highlighted and may cause detrimental effects are hematological IRAEs (heme-IRAEs). Of note, immune-induced eosinophilia itself is a heme-IRAE that is worthy of further investigation. In this report, we present two cases of advanced staged non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treated with single-agent pembrol

Prognostic Value of Platelet Count in Patients with Peripheral T Cell Lymphoma.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral T cell lymphoma (PTCL) is a heterogeneous entity with poor survival. We evaluated the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), absolute lymphocyte count (ALC), and platelet count as new prognostic factors for PTCL. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 77 patients with PTCL initially treated with anthracycline-based chemotherapy. Survival curves were compared between groups with different initial NLR (iNLR), end-point NLR (eNLR), initial ALC, and platelet counts. Cox regression was used to analyze the risk factor for survival. RESULTS: Patients with a higher e

Association of low CD4 cell count and intrauterine growth retardation in Thailand.

OBJECTIVE: Each year, intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) affects 20-30 million neonates worldwide, mostly in resource-limited settings. Increased perinatal and infant mortality has been associated with IUGR. Some studies have suggested that HIV infection could increase the risk of IUGR. To confirm this hypothesis, we examined the association between HIV-related factors and the risk of IUGR in Thailand. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Data from a cohort of 1436 HIV-infected pregnant women enrolled in the "Perinatal HIV Prevention Trial-1", a clinical trial conducted from 1997 to 1999 in Thailand, we

Factors of variation influencing bulk tank somatic cell count in dairy sheep.

Between January and December 2002, a total of 21,685 records for bulk tank milk somatic cell count (BTSCC) were obtained from 309 dairy ewe herds belonging to the Sheep Improvement Consortium in Castilla-Leon, Spain. Based on the first statistical model, ANOVA detected significant effects of herd, breed, month within herd, dry therapy, type of milking, contagious agalactia, and installations within machine milking on logBTSCC. A second statistical model was used on herds with machine milking to study the effect of the vacuum level and pulsation rate on BTSCC. Herd and month within herd were im…
