Preparation of succinylated cellulose membranes for functionalization purposes.

The anhydroglucose chains of cellulose possess hydroxyls that facilitate different chemical modification strategies to expand on, or provide new applications for membranes produced by the bacteria Gluconacetobacter xylinus. Conjugation with biomolecules such as proteins, especially by the amine groups, is of great value and interest for the production of biomaterial derivatives from bacterial cellulose. To assist in these modifications, cellulose was succinylated in order to prevent steric hindrance and to create an attachment point for conjugation. Bacterial cellulose membranes were first tre

Oxidized cellulose--survey of the most recent achievements.

The functionalization and particularly the oxidation of cellulose is an intriguing and challenging topic due to the presence of multiple reactive sites, which can undergo specific reactions. The variety of the oxidizing agents used to improve the selectivity and yields of these transformations is illustrated by the steadily growing of the number of publications and patents reported. This paper is focused on the most selective agents for cellulose oxidations, i.e., sodium periodate and stable or non persistent nitroxyl radicals, emphasizing on the most recent developments reported so far.

Nanocomposites of bacterial cellulose/hydroxyapatite for biomedical applications.

In the present work, a nanocomposite material formed by bacterial cellulose (BC) networks and calcium-deficient hydroxyapatite (HAp) powders was synthesized and characterized. The HAp nanoparticles were previously prepared by a wet chemical precipitation method, starting from aqueous solutions of calcium nitrate and di-ammonium phosphate salts. Energy-dispersive spectroscopy reveals that the prepared HAp corresponds to calcium-deficient hydroxyapatite. BC-HAp nanocomposites were prepared by introducing carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) into the bacteria culture media. HAp nanoparticles were then in

Taste sensing with polyacrylic acid grafted cellulose membrane.

There are reports of fabrication of taste sensor by adsorbing lipids into Millipore filter paper, which improved the taste sensing efficiency of membrane remarkably. We have made an attempt to prepare taste sensor material by grafting polyacrylic acid (PAA) to cellulose. The research work covers polymer membrane preparation, morphology study, and structural characterization of the membrane and study of the taste sensing characteristics of this membrane for five different taste substances. FTIR spectroscopic analysis and SEM were done to get an idea about the structure and morphology of the PAA

Pushing the limits of bacterial cellulose for biomedicine: a review.

Bacterial cellulose (BC) has emerged as a highly promising biomaterial due to its exceptional purity, high mechanical strength, excellent biocompatibility, and tunable nanostructure. Although its potential in a wide range of biomedical applications is well recognized, its clinical translation remains limited by a fragmented research landscape. Key aspects such as microbial production, material optimization, and application-specific functionalization are often studied independently by researchers from different disciplines, slowing the development of integrated, effective biomedical solutions.

Architecture and regulation of an enterobacterial cellulose secretion system.

Many free-living and pathogenic enterobacteria secrete biofilm-promoting cellulose using a multicomponent, envelope-embedded Bcs secretion system under the control of intracellular second messenger c-di-GMP. The molecular understanding of system assembly and cellulose secretion has been largely limited to the crystallographic studies of a distantly homologous BcsAB synthase tandem and a low-resolution reconstruction of an assembled macrocomplex that encompasses most of the inner membrane and cytosolic subunits and features an atypical layered architecture. Here, we present cryo-EM structures o

Application of cellulose acetate for controlled release of thymol.

Cellulose acetate (CA) was investigated as a carrier towards development of material with controlled release of thymol as a natural substance with strong antibacterial properties using high pressure techniques. Effect of thymol content on CA was confirmed by SEM, FTIR and DSC methods. Kinetic of thymol release from CA was tested using simulated gastric and intestinal fluids (hydrochloric acid and phosphate buffer saline). Results were correlated with Korsmeyer-Peppas and Weibull model. Depending on the thymol content and chemical nature of the release medium, the time of thymol release varied

Carboxymethyl cellulose film as a substrate for microarray fabrication.

Magnetic beads (MB) are widely used for quick and highly sensitive signal detection in microarray-based assays. However, this technique imposes stringent requirements for smoothness and adhesive properties of the surface, which most common substrates do not satisfy. We report here a new type of substrate for microarrays with a low adhesion to MB-thermally cross-linked carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) film. This substrate can be readily fabricated on a conventional glass slide. A highly cross-linked CMC film (∼1 cross-link per monomer unit) possesses a surface smooth on a nanometer scale and a low

Effect of herbicides on cellulose decomposition by Sporocytophaga myxococcoides.

The effects of 14 herbicides on cellulose decomposition by Sporocytophaga myxococcoides were studied by growing the organism in two different liquid cellulose-mineral salts media in the presence of the test agent and then quantitatively determining the residual cellulose. In the first medium, containing acid-hydrolyzed cellulose, anthrone reagent was used to determine residual carbohydrate. In the second medium, Gooch Pyrex fritted-glass crucibles were used to determine the amount of residual Whatman powdered cellulose. The herbicides used were Atrazine, Simazine, Dacthal, Diuron, Amiben, Banv

Eco-friendly Bi₂O₃ nanocomposite films based on cellulose acetate and carboxymethyl cellulose: A bioinspired approach for antimicrobial and biocompatible materials.

The development of eco-friendly biomaterials with antimicrobial and biocompatible properties is critical for biomedical and environmental applications. In this study, bismuth oxide nanoparticles (Bi₂O₃NPs) were synthesized via a green approach using Moringa oleifera leaf extract as a natural reducing and stabilizing agent, and subsequently incorporated into cellulose acetate (CA), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), and hybrid CMC@CA polymer matrices. The nanocomposite films were systematically characterized by XRD, FTIR, TEM, and XPS, confirming the formation of monoclinic α-Bi₂O₃ with uniform dis

Functional Porous Carboxymethyl Cellulose/Cellulose Acetate Composite Microspheres: Preparation, Characterization, and Application in the Effective Removal of HCN from Cigarette Smoke.

To selectively reduce the yield of hydrogen cyanide (HCN) in the cigarette smoke, functional porous carboxymethyl cellulose/cellulose acetate (CMC/CA) composite microspheres were prepared via the double emulsion-solvent evaporation method. Cupric ions, which have a high complexing ability toward HCN, were introduced to the CMC/CA composite microspheres during the fabrication process via an in situ ion cross-link method. The microspheres were characterized using nitrogen adsorption, mercury intrusion porosimetry, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The microspheres have a predominantly macr

Carboxymethyl cellulose from coconut fiber via sequential pretreatment.

The recalcitrant structure and high lignin content of coconut fiber limit its use as a raw material for synthesizing carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). This study examined the application of sequential pretreatments, autohydrolysis, alkaline extraction, and organosolv (AH-AE-OG), to valorize coconut lignocellulosic biomass for producing CMC. The pretreatment process effectively removed hemicelluloses, reducing their content from 16.88% in untreated coconut fiber to 0.59% after AH-AE-OG and bleaching steps. Cellulose content increased from 42.09% in the untreated sample to 80.71% after AH-AE-OG and

Regiochemistry controlled interfacial recognition of arabinoxylans on cellulose.

Arabinoxylan (AX)-cellulose interactions are central to plant cell wall architecture and biomass recalcitrance. Here, six AX variants differing in the extent and placement of arabinose (Ara) substitutions at O2, O3, and both O2/O3 are examined using molecular dynamics simulations. AX-native (5 Ara groups) reveals a marked surface-dependent variation in its interactions, displaying greater interfacial association with the (110) hydrophilic cellulose than with the (100) hydrophobic cellulose surface. Similarly, AXO3-all, characterized by O3 Ara substitution reveals comparatively reduced associat

Selective cellulose fibril release from hardwoods libriform tissue.

Cellulose fibrils are a renewable and biodegradable resource, but their extraction typically requires complete destruction of the original wooden matrix. We present a targeted strategy that enables selective liberation of cellulose microfibrils while preserving the integrity of the surrounding native wood structure. By combining partial delignification with localized surface modification using the ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([Bmim][OAc]), we enable selective liberation and separation of cellulose microfibrils without bulk dissolution or structural damage. This spatially c

Transforming Curcuma longa leaf waste into cellulose scaffolds.

The constant dearth of transplantable tissues and organs in India required the development of substitute biomaterials for tissue engineering. Plant-based decellularized scaffolds have become attractive options because of their abundance, ethical acceptability, architectural diversity, and lower risks of zoonotic transmission. Curcuma longa leaves were investigated in this study as a possible source of cellulose-based scaffolding for use in biomedical applications. After cuticle removal, an immersion decellularization technique utilizing sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) and triton-X-100 was develo

Biochemical characterization of cellulose isolated from mycobacterial biofilms.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) forms cellulose-enriched biofilms. These biofilms play a crucial role in the tuberculosis pathogenesis and drug tolerance exhibited by Mtb in vivo. However, the biophysical characteristics of the cellulose remain poorly explored. In the current study, the Updegraff method was employed to enrich acid-hydrolysis-resistant polysaccharides containing cellulose from three distinct models of biofilms: pellicle, submerged, and macrocolony biofilms of slow-growing Mtb and fast-growing M. smegmatis. The isolated material was subjected to Elemental analysis, Fourier tran
