Burns caused by prolonged contact of wet cement with skin are common in this country. Recent literature has highlighted other ways in which the use and manufacture of cement can lead to burn injuries, notably through explosion and contact with hot powder during manufacturing. These injuries are uncommon in this country and potentially very serious. Case studies are presented of two men injured in such a way in the same incident at a cement-manufacturing plant.

Unlike chromate, cobalt occurring as cobalt oxides in cement is not water-soluble in a detectable amount. Cobalt oxides are to some extent soluble in the presence of amino acids with which cobalt forms complexes. Such complexes can elicit patch test reactions. It is postulated that cobalt is more readily dissolved by forming complexes in eczematous skin than in normal skin. This may explain why cobalt sensitization in cement eczemas is secondary to chromate sensitivity.

AIMS: Optimal fixation of the tibial component is crucial to prevent aseptic loosening in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). This involves cement penetrating the tibia by 3 mm to 4 mm. Cement application is not standardized, and ideal penetration depth is not achieved frequently. Therefore, a cement compression device (CCD) was developed. The CCD is positioned around the tibial component, prevents cement leakage, and compresses cement into the tibia. It is hypothesized that the CCD enhances cement penetration and distribution in TKA.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate retrospectively the outcomes of cementation of cross-linked polyethylene (PE) liner in a well-fixed metal shell in 23 hips with an average follow-up period of 6 years. The mean Harris hip score was 69.6 +/- 12 (range, 46-83) points preoperatively. The average postoperative follow-up was 72.3 months (range, 56-100 months). Many peat soils are distributed around plateau lakes, and the reinforcement of peat soils with high organic matter content by ordinary cement cannot meet the actual engineering requirements.
