Experimental investigations in wistar rats indicate that cefsulodin, a new cephalosporin antibiotic with high activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, is more nephrotoxic than cephaloridine, the cephalosporin with the lowest renal tolerance up until new. A gonococcus was isolated from the vagina of a woman with pelvic inflammatory disease. The organism was typical in all respects except that, unlike any previously described gonococcus, it produced a beta-lactamase that conferred resistance to penicillin, ampicillin, and cephaloridine. A 68-year-old woman had a marked decrease in visual acuity, increased intraocular pressure, and acute iridocyclitis. She developed a pigmented hypopyon simulating an occult intraocular melanoma. Two anterior chamber paracenteses showed growth of Listeria monocytogenes. The patient received systemic intravenous penicillin, topical fortified gentamicin sulfate drops, and intraocular injections of cephaloridine. On discharge from the hospital after a two-week stay, visual acuity had improved and intraocular pressure had decreased.

A total of 184 cases of acute diarrhoea, in patients aged 1-36 months, were studied clinicobacteriologically. Enteropathogens were isolated in 22.28% cases. Campylobacter jejuni was isolated from 2.17% cases only. Salmonellae were isolated from 7.6% cases and 64.28% of them were S typhimurium. More than 75% of all isolates of salmonellae, shigellae, Esch coli and Campylobacter jejuni were sensitive to gentamicin and cephaloridine. Secondary lactose intolerance was noted in 6.52% cases only.

We present a patient with a corneal ulcer due to Listeria monocytogenes, which has not previously been considered to be a feature of human listeriosis. The ulcer responded to topical and subconjunctival gentamicin and cephaloridine. Subsequent management was complicated by the development of a fibrinous pupillary membrane leading to pupillary block requiring iridotomy and later vitrectomy with trabeculectomy. Listeria monocytogenes may be confused with diphtheroid contaminants seen in corneal ulcer scrapings and is probably underreported as a cause for microbial keratitis.

Fourteen isolates of Yersinia enterocolitica were obtained from a total of 319 samples of raw milk and milk products. None of the isolates produced heat-stable enterotoxin as measured by infant mouse test. All the isolates were sensitive to tetracycline, gentamicin, sulfamethoxazole trimethoprim and resistant to cephaloridine, ampicillin, nitrofurantoin and carbenicillin. Most of the isolates were probably environmental strains. This paper reports isolation of Y. enterocolitica from milk and milk products for the first time in Nigeria.
