Several different approaches to surgical decompression of the thoracic outlet have been described. This report describes a unique case of robotically assisted transthoracic cervical rib resection for neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome. This minimally invasive technique offers delicate tissue manipulation under optimal visualization of the thoracic outlet structures. Hence it promotes patients' safety and complete surgical decompression.

The authors report herein the results of examination and surgical management of fifty-one patients presenting with cervical ribs. Of these, there were 33 women. Compression of the neurovascular bundle (NVB) was found to be caused by a supplementary cervical rib in twenty-three patients while in the remaining 28 patients by a rudimentary cervical rib. The authors present three cases of cervical ribs discovered by computerized tomography (CT). This represents, to the authors' knowledge, the first such report. The radiologic appearance and relevant clinical findings of cervical ribs will be discussed.
