Nonossified cervical vertebrae in Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome: A case report.

RATIONALE: Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome (WHS) is a rare disorder caused by the loss of the distal part of the short arm of chromosome 4, and has … al vaginal delivery, weighing 1791 g. The patient was suspected to have congenital dysplasia of the cervical vertebrae on the routine newborn chest radiograph, and cervical spine magnetic resonance imaging revealed nonossification of the C3 and C4 vertebral bodies. DIAGNOSIS: The newborn had the "Greek warrior helmet" face typical of WHS. A deletion was detected in …

[Improvement of stabilization technique of cervical vertebrae using cylindrical implants].

The algorithm for cervical interbody stabilization with the use of vertical cylindrical mesh implant was improvement. Implementation of the developed method allows to reduce the load per unit area of bone bodies of recorded vertebrae in contact with the terminal part of the implant, which reduces the risk of loss of correction of the deformity after surgery. Results of surgical treatment of 5 patients for diseases and injuries of the cervical spine show the effectiveness of the method and the possibility of its application in clinical practice.

Morphological, stereological and radiological changes in pinealectomized chicken cervical vertebrae.

Considerable evidence supports the hypothesis that melatonin plays an important role in osteogenesis. We carried out an experiment to investigate histological and radiological changes in the cervical vertebrae of pinealectomized chickens. Thirty new-hatched chicks were divided into two groups: pinealectomized group (n=15) and nonpinealectomized control (n=15). Surgical pinealectomies were performed in Hybro broiler chickens at the age of 3 days. At 8 wk, one animal from each group was examined using computed tomography scanner to obtain density histograms of four consecutive vertebrae between …

[Injuries of the lower cervical vertebrae--the monocortical stabilization technique].

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: In contrast to the thoracolumbal spine, the cervical spine bears a lower biomechanical load and, therefore, anterior stabilization of a fracture is a definitive procedure in the majority of cases. What remains the matter of choice is screw fixation in the body of the vertebra involved. This may be either monocortical or bicortical. In this study, we evaluate a group of patients in whom fractures of the lower cervical spine were treated using the CSLP monocortical system (Synthes). MATERIAL: We included 68 patients in whom complete radiographic data were available and the

Second cervical vertebrae pedicle fractures versus synchondrosis in a child.

Fractures of the second cervical vertebrae (C2) can be difficult to diagnose in young children. A 17-month-old infant sustained bilateral C2 pedicle fractures after minor trauma. The initial lateral radiograph showed pedicle defects, but even with computed tomography and a bone scan with single photon emission computed tomography this could not be differentiated from a congenital abnormality. One week after injury, repeat radiographs showed spondylolisthesis confirming the defects were fractures. The fractures were treated by closed reduction and a halo vest and healed uneventfully. This child…

[Differential roentgenological diagnosis of injuries of the lower cervical vertebrae].

On the basis of 14 experiments with simulation of the lower cervical vertebra dislocations on cadavers and human cervical vertebra blocks, combined with stage discography, the authors singled out 3 groups of +disk and ligament structure damages: damage of capsular--ligamentous apparatus of the rear support complex; damage of ligamentous--capsular apparatus and disk; damage of ligamentous-capsular apparatus, frontal longitudinal ligament and total rupture of a disk. Differentiation is made according to the degree of dislocation of vertebra bodies and articular processes. The data are confirmed

[Encephalic syndrome following trauma of the cervical vertebrae in childhood].

The author, by explaining and taking the "encephalic syndrome", which was first described in 1949 by Bärtschi and Rochaix, as a base, gives a detailed description of a corresponding syndrome for the age of childhood. After discussing the clinical symptomatology, course of disease, etiology, and pathogenesis, he describes the method of differential diagnosis that allows a clear distinction to be made between the encephalic syndrome and commotio cerebri and commotio spinalis. From a stock of 50 patients with vertebragenic headache it was possible to isolate 5 cases with encephalic syndromes due

Is It Meaningful and Necessary to Avoid the Seventh Cervical Vertebra in Long Level Cervical Fusion?

AIM: To compare the clinical and radiological results of patients who underwent multilevel posterior cervical fusion (PCF) with different end levels (C6 or C7). MATERIAL AND METHODS: We collected radiographs and clinical results of all subjects who underwent 3 level or more PCF for degenerative disease from May 2012 to December 2020. Based on the location of the end of fusion during surgery, patients were divided into C6 (group 1) and C7 patients (group 2). The clinical and radiological results of both groups were compared over two years. RESULTS: A total of 52 patients met the inclusion cri

The ossification of the costal element of the seventh cervical vertebra with particular reference to cervical ribs.

During 16 years of study at Northwick Park Hospital 715 fetuses were radiographed to determine the incidence of skeletal malformations. A technique using low kV and industrial film provided higher resolution radiographs than would have been possible in live births because of dose considerations. Gestational age calculated from LMP and ultrasound findings ranged from less than 18 weeks to 42 weeks. A separate costal element of C7, the possible precursor of a cervical rib, could be identified in 63% of fetuses. Males outnumbered females 403:311 but there was no intersex difference in the presenc

Stabilization of metastatic lesions affecting the second cervical vertebra.

PurposeMetastatic spine disease is an ever-increasing burden on health care systems. Certain levels in the spine confer unique biomechanical characteristics and hence are of interest. Isolated C2 lesions are rare. We aimed to review our results in surgical management of C2 lesions.Materials and methodsWe reviewed all surgical stabilizations of metastatic spine lesions over the preceding 4 years. Six patients with C2 lesions were identified. Of these five underwent surgical stabilization primarily for disease affecting the second cervical vertebra. Case notes and radiology were reviewed to dete

Measuring cervical vertebra movements using kinect sensor.

The incidence of cervical vertebra spondylosis is increasing with the pace of life while there is no high-efficient measurement method. This study proposed a non-contact, high-efficient, and high-precisionmethod measuring the cervical vertebra activities which obtains the cervical vertebra activities by combining the function of skeletal tracking and face tracking. A comparison study between the proposed and traditional methods has been conducted here. Statistics shows that the efficiency of the proposed measurement method at least is 6 times faster than modified square shaped goniometers that

Computed tomography of congenital spondylolisthesis of the sixth cervical vertebra.

Congenital anomalies of the cervical spine occur relatively commonly. An interesting anomaly is congenital spondylolisthesis of the sixth cervical vertebra. We are presenting a case of this anomaly as imaged with plain radiography and computed tomography. We have also reviewed the previous literature and attempted to clarify distinctions between bilateral cervical spondylolysis with spondylolisthesis and other cervical spine lesions.

Sagittally oriented fractures of the lateral masses of the cervical vertebrae.

Lateral flexion of the cervical spine may cause a sagittally oriented fracture of the lateral mass with shearing of all or part of the lateral mass away from the vertebral body. We report 22 patients with 24 sagittal fractures of the cervical lateral masses. Cross-table lateral roentgenograms suggested the presence of a sagittal lateral mass fracture in two thirds of the cases based upon malalignment or widening of the facet joints, displaced fracture fragments, subluxation of the spine, or rotation of the spine above the level of abnormality. However, the cross-table lateral roentgenogram was

Dome-like expansive laminoplasty for the second cervical vertebra.

The second cervical vertebra (C2) is in a pivotal position for the alignment and stability of the cervical vertebrae as a whole. Since its spinal canal is wider at the cranial and narrower at the caudal end, a dome-like excision of the inner side of the spinal canal from the caudal toward the cranial end results in the decompression of the lesion, preserving the dorsal part of the C2. The authors performed this C2 dome-like expansive laminoplasty on 33 patients (25 cases of the ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament, six of developmental spinal canal stenosis, and two of spondylos…
