Human monkeypox is a zoonosis occurring sporadically in the tropical rain forest of western and central Africa. The exact incidence and geog … aboratory tested. 3.3% of human monkeypox cases were found among 730 patients diagnosed as cases of chickenpox, 7.3% among cases diagnosed as "atypical chickenpox" and 6.1% among cases with skin rash for which clinical diagnosis could not be established. The diagnostic difficulties were mainly based on clinical features characteristic of chickenpox: regional …

While chickenpox is usually a mild and self-limiting disease, life-threatening complications can occur, particularly in risk groups such as pregnant women. In the case reported here, a 34-year-old woman, pregnant with her second child, was exposed to the varicella zoster virus (VZV) during the sixth week of pregnancy. Blood results showed seronegative status for VZV. Despite properly and well-timed administration of immunoglobulins, the patient developed chickenpox two weeks after exposure. Two days after developing symptoms she was admitted to the emergency room with fever and sudden shortnes…

BACKGROUND: Chickenpox vaccine is not included in the routine childhood vaccination programme in Sweden. The aim of this study was to estimate the baseline of national chickenpox disease burden, as comprehensive studies, required for an assessment regarding vaccine introduction, are lacking.
METHODS: We used available health care registers and databases; the death register, hospitalisations register, communicable disease notifications database, Stockholm County registers on consultations in specialist and primary care, temporary parental benefit to care for a sick child, and searches on the h…

Necrotizing fasciitis is a rapid, potentially fatal soft tissue infection. Chickenpox is a common childhood illness not usually associated with severe complications. We present the case of an 8-year-old girl with necrotizing fasciitis of the upper back arising from superinfection of varicella skin lesions. Necrotizing fasciitis may have devastating sequelae, including septic shock, which mandate vigorous fluid resuscitation, appropriate antimicrobial therapy, and early aggressive surgical debridement.

CASE REPORT: A 34-year-old male patient developed acute retinal necrosis in his left eye about three weeks after the onset of chickenpox. Systemic antiviral treatment with intravenous acyclovir (10 mg/kg/8 hours) and systemic corticosteroids (1 mg/kg/day) controlled the retinitis and the patient suffered no loss of visual acuity.
DISCUSSION: Acute retinal necrosis is an unusual complication of chickenpox. A mild form of this entity has been described during the course of primary varicella-zoster infection. Adequate and early therapy during the acute phase of the disease with intravenous acycl…

Ischaemic stroke is a recognized complication of chickenpox. Seven cases of ischaemic stroke in children after recent varicella infection are discussed in detail to emphasise that there are several mechanisms by which this may arise.

Three cases of bilateral optic neuritis, one of which also had transverse myelitis, are described in young adults following chickenpox. Severe bilateral loss of vision developed in all cases and was followed by good visual recovery in the two with isolated optic neuritis, but poor recovery in the patient with concomitant transverse myelitis. The interval between the initial rash and subsequent optic neuritis suggests an immunological pathogenesis for this complication.

When areas of the skin which are normally covered become sunburnt just before chickenpox eruption, there occurs a marked intensification of the rash on the freshly burnt parts. This phenomenon is not widely known. Its history, published reports and our original observations on this 'actinic' chickenpox are presented, with comment on its pathogenesis.

Varicella gangrenosa is a rare but life-threatening dermatological complication of infection with varicella-zoster virus. A healthy 37-year-old male who had been diagnosed with varicella 20 days back was admitted to our hospital with complaints of fever and painful necrotic skin lesions. Physical examination revealed multiple round to oval ulcers covered with eschar predominantly over arms, lower limbs, back of trunk and flanks. Streptococcus pyogenes and Staphylococcus aureus grew in wound culture. Biopsy revealed ulceration and necrosis of epidermis, and edema, hemorrhage and granulation tis
