Our liver transplant program was started in 1993 in a private clinic and a public hospital. Thereafter, a rapid increase in adults and pediatric candidates for this therapeutic option lead to this analysis of results in 165 orthotopic liver transplants (OLT) in 143 patients between November 1993 and December 2002. Seventy-four OLT were performed in 66 adult patients and 91 in the pediatric group. Liver grafts came from cadaveric donors in 145 cases (74 adults and 71 children). The technique of living-related donor was utilized in 20 pediatric cases. Main indications for OLT in the adult group

The monthly incidence of scarlet fever was studied by time-series analysis. Two types of periodic fluctuations were detected involving a bimodal short seasonal cycle and a long-term cycle whose period takes 5 years approximately. The interactions of the respiratory transmission mechanism, person to person contacts and environmental temperature would explain the seasonal cycle bimodality. The long-term cycle would be explained by asynchronic fluctuations of the fraction of population assigned to "cases" and "susceptibles".

Studies about chondrocalcinosis in the Chiloe Islands (Chile) showed the high frequency of the disease there and how most of it is aggregated in a few highly involved families. Pedigrees and the high degree of consanguinity among parents of index cases pointed to a recessive inheritance. The presence of common Caucasian anthropological features of genetic value in the patients and the lack of Indian mixture in three of the involved families, documented back to 1600, suggest a Caucasian origin of the mutation. Biochemical studies of the patients' synovial fluid showed a significant rise in pyro…

We report Sporothrix brasiliensis infection in three cats from Santiago, Chile. Recently, S. brasiliensis was reported in cats from the southernmost region of Chile located 2,190 km from Santiago. Our findings emphasize the emergence of S. brasiliensis in the Chilean context, reflecting its rapid expansion across South America in recent years. Veterinarians should include S. brasiliensis in the differential diagnosis of skin conditions in cats.

Neural tube defects (open spina bifida, anencephaly, and encephalocele) represent the first congenital malformations to be preventable through public health measures such as supplementation and/or food fortification with folic acid. In Chile, starting in January 2000, the Chilean Ministry of Health legislated to add folic acid to wheat flour (2.2 mg/kg) to reduce the risk of NTDs. This policy resulted in an estimated mean additional supply of 427 microg/d in significant increases in serum folate and red cell folate of 3.8 and 2.4-fold, respectively, in women of fertile age, one year after fort…

Chromoblastomycosis is a fungal infection of the skin and subcutaneous tissue, of chronic evolution, caused by dematiaceous fungi. The disease occurs worldwide, mainly in tropical and subtropical regions, but in regions like Chile there is only one report of a human case more than 30 years ago. We present the case of a 46-year-old Haitian man, resident in Chile, with verrucous plaques in the right anterior tibial area of one year of evolution. The diagnosis of chromoblastomycosis was confirmed when muriform cells and dematiaceous colonies were observed in the histopathological analysis and the…

Candida auris is an emerging multi-drug-resistant fungus that is rapidly spreading worldwide. Since the first reports in 2009, many isolates across five continents have been identified as agents of hospital-associated infections. Independent and simultaneous outbreaks of C. auris are becoming a major concern for healthcare and scientific community. Moreover, laboratory misidentification and multi-drug-resistant profiles, rarely observed for other non-albicans Candida species, result in difficult eradication and frequent therapeutic failures of C. auris infections. In this article we present th

Endemic scrub typhus was recently detected on Chiloé Island in southern Chile. We report a series of cases, acquired over a wide geographical range in continental Chile during 2016-2018, demonstrating that this emerging rickettsial infection is also found on the mainland of South America.

In chronicles or in the historiography of the Colony in Chile there are few references about epidemics different to smallpox; like typhus, typhoid fever, dysentery, etc. Almost all, fast spreading in the country and some with high lethality, which led to overflowing the capacity of hospitals in the Chilean colonial period.

After the great epidemic of the exanthematic typhus of 1918-1919 in Chile, there was a gradual decrease in the number of cases , until it became endemic around 1926. Starting in 1932 and until 1939 a new epidemic outbreak occured that prompted researchers to its study supported by the new clinical and technological advances of this period. Subsequently, two important events occured: the erradication of the vector ( human louse) by means of effective insecticides and the discovery of an effective antibiotic treatment.

BACKGROUND: The first massive national measles vaccination campaign in Chile was done in 1992. Since then a laboratory surveillance of the disease has been undertaken at the Instituto de Salud Pública.
AIM: To report the results of laboratory surveillance of measles between 1992 and 1995.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Paired serum samples from suspected cases of measles were received at the Institute. Measles specific IgG was determined with indirect immunofluorescence methods. IgG and IgM immunoenzymatic methods were used as complementary techniques, and rubella infections were ruled out by hemmagl…

Twenty three unselected cases of optic neuritis were re-examined between 2 and 18 years after the onset of the disease, with a mean of 9.7 years. Only 8/23 (35%) had unilateral non-recurrent disease. One patient only (4.3%) went on to develop multiple sclerosis. These findings support the impression that demyelinating disease varies considerably in Latin America compared with northern industrialised countries.

France celebrated the first centennial of the French Revolution. Sixty nine international meetings took place, 24 of them dealing with medical or public health problems. The Chilean Commission for the Paris Universal Exhibit asked Dr Adolfo Murillo to write an account (460 pages) of public health conditions in Chile. Main epidemics at that time (smallpox, tuberculosis, dysentery, venereal diseases, typhoid fever and typhus are described.
